What do you eat when you are sick?

I am unfortunately sick right now with a crappy cold. I am trying to figure out what to eat for dinner. Something preferably really simple since I am fending for myself. I can't even decide on fast food for pete's sake!!

Anyway, I was just wondering what you like to eat when you are sick. Maybe I'll get some ideas.....if I am still awake

lookout123 08-18-2008 01:36 PM

honey nut cheerios

HungLikeJesus 08-18-2008 01:50 PM

Open-face roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes, and gravy and butter over the whole thing.

Chocolatl 08-18-2008 02:17 PM

For a cold with gastrointestinal side-effects, I end up eating lightly toasted bread and lemon-lime soda or ginger ale.

For a plain ol' cold, I like salty soups. Chicken flavored Ramen or something out of a can, or if I'm feeling a little more energized, chicken tortilla soup made in the Crock-Pot. Long cook times make stuff pretty easy to digest, and a one-dish deal means less to clean up.

Get well soon!

Soft boiled egg mushed up in a cap with a little butter and mayonnaise.

nowhereman 08-18-2008 03:23 PM

Chicken broth with lots of garlic and onions - maybe some pearl barley or ouzo pasta.

classicman 08-18-2008 03:34 PM

Chocolate brownies & nothing else

Laurie Henderson 08-18-2008 04:16 PM

Stomach issues are usually dealt with by eating pretzels & a brown soda - too much citric acid in the clear sodas.

Colds? nothing like chicken noodle soup... sometimes add a little parm cheese.

Lemon drops help with a sore throat almost as well as Hall's - and they taste better. I also find that lemon drops and lemonade help with chest congestion.

When I'm getting over a Crohn's blockage, it's clear broth and popsicles.

Pico and ME 08-18-2008 08:09 PM

Lots of tea and toast.

And hot chicken noodle soup to clear my nasal passages.

jinx 08-18-2008 08:24 PM

Spicy... hot.... chilies, cayenne, garlic, horseradish, wasabi... and Vitamin C.

zippyt 08-18-2008 11:04 PM

Aliantha 08-18-2008 11:17 PM

lately, pretty much anything I can get my hands on. I find I'm feeling sick all the time except when I'm eating. Hmmmm...this is a problem. lol

But if I'm really sick from something, I usually like honey on toast with a cup of tea.

Sundae 08-19-2008 04:39 AM

Heinz tomato soup.
Scrambled eggs on toast.
Lucozade.

That's what my mum fed me when I was ill and I revert to as comfort food.
But to be honest, if I'm really ill I will just drink water - it's all I can manage.

Pie 08-19-2008 07:32 AM

stomach issues -- rice with buttermilk and fried omum (ajwain)
cold -- good wonton soup or matzoh ball soup
congestion -- pasta with anchovies, garlic, chilies and Parmesan, squeeze of lemon

Shawnee123 08-19-2008 07:34 AM

Ahh yes, tomato soup and grilled cheese...what mom gave me when I was feeling a bit better.

In the throes of the flu, though, it was tea and toast.

Hangover: pasta, and all the carbs I can get my hands on. ;)

bbro 08-19-2008 08:33 AM

I went with some Banquet meals. Not very healthy, but it was the only thing I wanted.

I am a huge fan of crackers and mint ginger ale. Mmmm. Too bad I don't have any, so it's just regular ginger ale. :(

Chocolatl 08-19-2008 08:36 AM

I once got carded at the grocery store for buying ginger ale. I hadn't turned 21 yet, but I seemed so determined to buy this ginger ale the cashier finally decided to "let it slide." Poor gal. Finally, we realized she thought it was alcoholic and explained that it was just soda.

bbro 08-19-2008 08:45 AM

HA HA! That's funny. Doesn't it say on the bottle that it is soda?

I was coming back to add that won-ton soup has also been used when sick as well as mom's orzo soup and toast cut into triangles. As mom is 8 hours away, I might make the man person pick me up some won-ton and he can have left over baked chicken and cous cous

Juniper 08-19-2008 10:12 AM

Ditto the chicken noodle or tomato soup, for a cold. Good old mac & cheese from a box is good too. And ice cream - that's good ANYTIME. Ice cream is my absolute favorite food ever. :)

Ginger ale for tummy troubles. Got to be Canada Dry, I can't stand that other stuff.

Clodfobble 08-19-2008 01:14 PM

I once had to buy a bottle of "wine" for a stage prop, and I got some of that Marzetti's sparkling cider stuff (which is actually really good...) At our local grocery stores, the computer automatically prompts you to enter a birthdate when you scan something alcoholic, and the cashier was freaking out because she couldn't get the prompt to come up and she was just certain it was supposed to, even after I showed her where it said "non-alcoholic" on the bottle.

Spexxvet 08-19-2008 01:23 PM

Beer

And chocolate chip cookies

Shawnee123 08-19-2008 01:55 PM

Well just dandy now! :)

Good to see you!

FStop 08-19-2008 02:49 PM

Knorr's Chicken Bullion. Mmm.

Cloud 08-19-2008 03:00 PM

dry toast, crackers, or milquetoast; tea, sprite, "flat" soda

at least, that's what I always got. yummy.

When I have a cold or respiratory illness, I usually crave garlic. Depending on the state of my throat Skittles and ice cream. If my stomach's upset, nothing, popsicles, active yogurt, liquids.

ZenGum 08-19-2008 08:15 PM

I have strange friends.
Cold-cures I have seen people eat include:
A whole tray of tiny hot chillies - raw.
A whole lemon. I mean the whole damn thing, peel and seeds and flesh.
Butterscotch Schnapps (ok that I understand).
spoonfuls of 2 parts honey 1 part wasabi (wait that was me).

ZenGum, your sig line reminds me of this:

ZenGum 08-19-2008 08:34 PM

[changes sig line]

For posterity, the line had been "Peeping sheepishly in through the doorway"

Aliantha 09-02-2008 12:18 AM

Lately the thing I've been having when I feel sick is lemon barley cordial. It seems to stop me throwing up.

I've decided it's magical.
