Ye Olde Aging Athlete Thread
Thrill of victory agony of de feets.
Anybody have advice for tendonitis? The elbow of my weapon arm is really sore this fine morning, since I did a round robin with three teenagers in epee and foil last night. I tend to overgrip a bit so I'm gonna keep having problems until I get my feces consolidated. Right now I'm hitting the advil, rotating cold and heat, and may try curls which seemed to help in the past. |
Gorilla curls work well at strengthening those tendons. The entire system of tendons from the lower arm up to the shoulder. Gorilla curls are done on the preacher curl bench. Start with 15 pounds until you find the right weight for you. Hold the weight at about a 45 degree angle and rotate in a circular motion both clock and counter clockwise.
Before those sessions, try warming up with large rotation movements on all joints. 5 to 10. |

Thanks for the tip man. |
Sounds like tennis elbow. If you pick up something with your hand, palm face-down, does it hurt near your elbow?
|
Yeppers.
|
this may sound dumb, but is it your mouse (computer) hand as well?
|
Yah, dominant hand, mouse at work touch pad at home, bad typing technique...
|
i found that my "tennis elbow" problem disappeared when i quit resting my forearm on the desk while mousing around. pressure on the wrists will screw with things.

What kind of mouse do you have? I've found my trackball has really helped with wrist problems (on the computer all day at work and often play games at home for long periods of time.) Your wrist stays pretty stationary.
I loved your opening to your post...who has seen the old Wide World of Sports who doesn't remember that poor skiing guy tumbling down the hill week after week? :) |
I used to ski like that, its a wonder I can walk.
Optical at work. I think it is more about typing than mouse stuff. I really don't click around at work, but I do write stuff. |
..or the big ginormous Russian guy throwing down the weight. My coach in high school...holy cow that was a long time ago....used to have us do these things called "East German drill". Said it gave Alexi a 36 inch vertical leap. Grueling.

Nice snap shot .joe. Meat head coaches were the rule back in the day, weren't they. I'm remembering a wrestling coach pounding on side of my buddies head "proving" a single leg take down wasn't sufficient.

I grew up watching poor Vinko crash over and over again... |
Down Under, Wide World of Sports featured this gem of a crash every week...

i saw that live. it was awesome. almost as awesome as joe theismans's leg breaking....saw that live too......my nuts retreated into my body cavity.....
not safe for the squeamish: |
Why did I watch that again?
I do remember that Letterman featured a "Joe Theismann Pencil Sharpener" the following week. They had it set up so that his calf was the crank on the sharpener, and of course it just rotated around freely, like Joe's did. |
Ouchies
I presume you've seen Jake Brown's little fall at the X-games? |
