Political Compass

Have you taken the test?

My political compass
Economic Left/Right: -2.88
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -4.77

a little to the right of Ghandi. :)

dave 06-03-2002 04:28 PM

I swear to Christ we had this linked before.

Nic Name 06-03-2002 04:49 PM

I remember something like this but couldn't find it.

If we've been there, done that, I could delete the friggin' thing.

Bear with me... i'm a noob. be nice to me. don't yell at me if i make a mistake.

Economic -7.75

Oh boy, I can hear the sirens wailing now...

Could be, but a search for "compass" doesn't hit it.

"Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -1.50
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -4.46"

dave 06-03-2002 05:05 PM

Nic - not yelling. Just hoping to jog someone's memory so they dig up the old thread.

Maggie - I'll look now.

[Edit - Dammit Tony, help me out here. When'd we do this? It was to politicalcompass.org and I swear it wasn't that long ago. ]

perth 06-03-2002 05:22 PM

Economic Left/Right: -3.75
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -1.59

this is almost exactly opposite of where i would have placed myself. wierd.

dave 06-03-2002 05:27 PM

YEAH!

I got to this question and after this, I knew I wasn't losing my mind.

One day, science may be able to cure homosexuality.

Remember - Tony answered "yes" because he feels that one day, we'll understand the human body and brain so well that we'll be able to change it - but he doesn't feel like homosexuality is a disease, and he's afraid that the answer was interpreted as though it was viewed as a disease.

Now where the fuck is that damn thread?

For the record, here's mine:

Economic Left/Right: -3.38
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -4.15

BrianR 06-03-2002 05:36 PM

my test results

What does this mean for the future of society?

All Right Squirells enjoy.

Oh yah that week I was an left/right economic 4.00 and Authoritarian/Libertarian -4.77

jaggy introduced it 1/2 way down page 2

Nic Name 06-03-2002 06:35 PM

It's an interesting test, as Jag said, so I'm happy to have resurected it and given it a separate thread where it might get more participation.

Come to think of it ... for all his protesting this time, dhamsaic didn't post his test results then. It's important we know where he stands, since he's the only one in the Cellar who has officially declared himself in the race for President. ;)

Griff 06-03-2002 06:43 PM

Wow Nic, all I have to do is teach you some economics and you'll be perfect. ;)

I believe sycamore is willing to be drafted as well but hasn't declared.

The questions do seem to pin down where folks are even if they leave a lot to be desired.

Yeah. Considering he's stated "Drugs and Prostitution" as one of his platform planks. Sounds more Libertarian than Republican, though.

Or is that two planks? dham, do you only support them together, or are they independant issues? :-)

Griff 06-03-2002 06:49 PM

dhams politics seem to be improving, UT must be keeping him after class.

Undertoad 06-03-2002 06:52 PM

http://cellar.org/2002/cellarpolicompass.gif

The original thread was called US administration restricts Nov11 investigations -- of course, with the thread hijacking we were doing back then.

I re-took the test and went from 2.73/-5.74 to 2.38/-5.33. I guess my views have moderated in the last six months.

Nic Name 06-03-2002 08:25 PM

I can't wait for Jag to login, during the wee hours, and see that his politicalcompass suggestion took off again.

warch 06-04-2002 12:34 AM

I'm with the pack at Econ L/R -2.88 and Authoritarian/Libertarian -6.41
Its interesting, but I see what you mean about the phrasing of the questions.

Griff 06-04-2002 06:35 AM

There is an interesting hole in the questions around the issue of business subsidy, which if included would move me left on the econ scale. I think my tolerance for the empty rhetoric of the left was pretty well whittled away taking education theory classes in school so while I may share many goals with lefties a quiz like this won't reflect it. If not already obvious, I believe in the primacy of the individual in all aspects of life including economics so if the choice is the individual or the state I choose the individual, if its the individual or the corporation its the individual. (griff cowardly trying to weasle his way toward the center)

I bet anybody taking the test often enough will converge to the center. :-)

Now I'm bringing that GIF up in the GIMP, to see if I can't get some better contrast on those colors; it's hard to tell some of them apart.

elSicomoro 06-04-2002 11:11 AM

How did I miss this thread yesterday? *puts down crack pipe*

After taking it again several times, my number is about the same on the L/R, though my Libertarian number has dropped a little.

I think the econ questions are pulling my L/R number towards the center. I would say I'm pro-business, although I think its extremely important for a business to be a good member of its community. You won't find me at a G8/IMF/WTO protest...yet. ;)

You know, the first time I retook it yesterday, I went rather markedly towards the center (-2.5 and -4), to the point where it didn't seem right to me. I think I initially answered a lot of the questions luke warm, and did 3 more of them reading the questions more carefully and giving them more thought.

Admittedly, some of my responses remained "luke warm" (i.e. "agree" or "disagree"), but I couldn't imagine my stances changing that much in 3 months.

Actually, we're all just voices in Tony's head, arguing amongst ourselves. -- the Insane libertarian. [ed. note: small l libertarian, capital I Insane]

Quote:

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder, has several diagnostic features:
• The presence of two or more distinct identities, each with its own unique, and enduring, way of relating to the world and self.
• At least two of these identities recurrently take control of the person’s behavior.
• An inability to recall important personal information to an extent that is more than ordinary forgetfulness. Classic examples are finding new clothes in your closet which you don’t remember buying; finding yourself in a place or situation and not being able to remember how you got there; having a complete loss of memory for what happened in the previous few days.

DID would not be diagnosed if the symptoms did not cause a major disturbance to the person’s life or if they were due to the physiological effects of a substance (e.g., drugs or alcohol) or a general medical condition.

Some may recall my political delusions of grandeur last summer. I'm quite happy in my current role as King of Torresdale. :)

Seriously, to run a country of 280 million people is an awesome responsibility. I can't even begin to imagine it. I'm going to stick with being an armchair politician for now. ;)

Although...I would like to be an ambassador. Dave, please keep me in your thoughts if you get elected. I'm thinking Mexico, Canada, the UK, Spain, or Samoa. I don't know if they elect the governor of Guam, the Marianas, or American Samoa (they do in PR), but those would also be acceptable.

Have known of the link for a long time and was tempted to post in the cool site of the day, (cool for news/political junkies anyway). I didn't want to duplicate the effort of other dwellars' work, so I searched and found this thread.

I would be interested to see the results for others refreshed or in some cases, posted for the first time.

I actually dislike the way several of the questions are phrased. I don't think there's enough subtelty to answer many of them accurately.

But all in all, I guess it really didn't deliver much in the way of suprises.

I'm between Nelson Mandella and The Dalai Lama as far as my non-authoritarianism (aka libertarianism) and I'm very much on the right for economics. I'm nearly in the exact position as Milton Friedman, only slightly less authoritarian (more libertarian) than him.
