As a TV addict, hearing/seeing this pains me. D, your missing a lot of good stuff, not only purely entertainment shows, but some edutainment shows too. (and I don't mean on PBS).

Quote:

I can't stand commercials....
Granted most of 'em are annoying, but some are actually informative, and even entertaining.

Hey, more channels means more commercials to pay for the TV shows and movies on those networks.

Ok, I'm missing The Lost Book Of Nostradamus.

Mockingbird 10-29-2007 03:17 AM

I don't watch TV, either. I haven't for a long time now. I read books and honestly don't feel the loss.

Perry Winkle 10-29-2007 03:36 AM

I don't watch much TV.

Sometimes something will catch my attention: Rome, The Long Way 'Round. Starting last night at 9, I'm actually watching an hour of TV per week now. The Long Way Down started, and I'll probably watch it. The good thing is that BBC 2 doesn't really have commercials.

If I had to pay anything to see this stuff, I wouldn't.

TheMercenary 10-29-2007 08:26 AM

I watch TV, lots of it. Mostly in this order of preference:

News
Discovery, History, A&E
Comedy Channel
PBS
National Geographic Channel
Travel Channel
Spike TV and AMC
Sports
HBO and some other no commercial channels
The Weather Channel

DanaC 10-29-2007 08:46 AM

Hmmm....I watch:

News,
Comedy shows
News
Dramas
News
Current affairs
News
Documentaries.....
and news.:P

I am a parliamentary junkie. I like to know what's going on in Westminster, so all the QuestionTime type programmes, news and analysis, behind the scenes stuff and the Parliament channel if there's nothing else on :P

kerosene 10-29-2007 08:57 AM

I don't watch TV...occasionally we will watch a DVD movie, but no cable. And we can't get any local stations here. Doesn't bother me, at all. Too many other things I want to do.

Cloud 10-29-2007 09:36 AM

I watch TV all the time. Usually with the sound turned off and the caption on; and with the stereo on and a book in my hand.

I think kids' tv time should be strictly limited, however. I've already got the "book habit"--they do not.

monster 10-29-2007 10:17 AM

I don't watch TV. I don't have time to feel sorry for those who do, either.

Perry, no commercials on BBC, but you are supposed to pay your TV license.....

staceyv 10-29-2007 10:21 AM

We don't have cable and can't get reception on any local stations, either, so we haven't watched tv in years.
But we do subscribe to Blockbuster online.

As a TV addict, I am highly envious of Dar. I'm trying my hardest to cut back, but I'm having a tough time breaking the habit of switching the TV on for background noise.

Thankfully, the program lineup kind of sucks right now, so it hasn't proven as difficult as in the past.

glatt 10-29-2007 12:41 PM

At the end of the day, after we get the kids in bed, I'm so damn tired. I just have to plop down on the couch. And the remote it right there.

b. you never sleep Sure I do, in my call room

c. you're exaggerating a tadNot really.

d. you live on a planet that has 36 hour days. No, 24 hour days. I am on a 48 hour shift now, where when I am not working I can watch tv, post here, or sleep. And work when there is work to be done. :D

lumberjim 10-29-2007 01:13 PM

I figured it was something like that. getting paid to be ready to work kicks ass.

Drax 10-29-2007 02:16 PM

Alright, ya' know what, I shouldn't have started this thread. My bad. If you're not a TV fan, that's you're decision (even if you're missing some good stuff, like 4 certain History Channel shows and a thing on the Travel Channel I saw over the weekend). Just don't let me know, otherwise, I might be tempted to try to change your opinion, which I have no wish to do.

I've always wondered about that. Why do you need a license just to own a TV in England?

So it's OK for you to say this:

Yea, like a fireman, sort of. Plus it's by the hour. And when I finish at 7 am on Wed I leave this one and go to another one for 8 or 9 hours, go home, eat with the family and come back on Thurs am for another 48 hours. What a joy. But hey, I am off Sat! then back for another 24 on Sunday.

Because they don't have commercials and the government controls the airwaves.

monster 10-29-2007 08:19 PM

Something like that. It's a licence to use not to own, but they are effectively the same. You only need one per household, though, regardless of how many TVs you have. The TV licence also pays for BBC Radio, which is also commericial free and excellent. You do not need a licence to listen to that. As for government control, well, yes and no. US TV is way more censored and channels have much more politicial bias.....

End result, no commercials on BBC, higher quality programming all round. There is commercial TV, but because it must compete with the govt funded commericial-free TV, not only are the programs good, the commercials are too.

Moving here is the reason I stopped watching TV. I took up the internet instead. But I only visit commercial-free sites. ;)

(TV licence is $270 per year, so comparable in price to basic cable. http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/index.jsp)

Thanks Monster. I never fully understood it even though we have visited the UK a few times and have friends who visit us here. Our TV must actually torture them. I love the BBC radio. I try to grab it off an internet stream when I think about it.

monster 10-29-2007 08:45 PM

You're welcome. There are additional TV options, but that's the origin. I have heard that the quality of TV has deteriorated since I left (6.5 years ago), because of reduced funding, satellite TV competition and general lowering of standards, but now I'm out of the habit of watching,I don't really care any more. the good documentaries etc can be obtained on DVD or over the internet, the good discussion is here, we live near Detroit so not all radio is country....

Are you sure she knows about your hand issue?

Aliantha 10-29-2007 11:24 PM

Isn't limey a he?

And didn't we have this discussion a couple of weeks ago (with regard to datalyss disability), and anyone could be forgiven for not realizing it's the same person as Drax since there have been a number of name changes.

I think it's time for you to take a chill pill data.

lumberjim 10-29-2007 11:24 PM

wasn't it drax that had the hand issue? who is this datalyss person, and why do they seem so familiarly whiny?

lumberjim 10-29-2007 11:25 PM

damn you ali....you ruined my irony. damn you to hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

monster 10-29-2007 11:31 PM

Sorry about the hands issue - I did know but had forgotten when making my post. I am not in the habit of mocking people for their physical afflictions.
Please accept my apologies on that score.

I was, however, mocking your attitude to those that don't watch TV.

Sundae 10-30-2007 04:26 AM

Limey is definitely a woman, we've seen her cleavage :)

Datalyss or whatever you are calling yourself this week - check your attitude. Limey didn't throw anything back in your face, she posted her opinion on a message board using your structure for effect.

Oh. My bad. But still, despite my "even if..." comments, I was trying to apologize for starting this thread...and my anti-non-TV watcher attitude.

I used to be a hard core TV addict. Then one day I quit cold turkey. That was in 97.

Since then I've learned that it's not the TV that is addictive, it's the internet, digital cameras, and ipod devices.

When there is a TV around with cable I'm hyptnotized by the Discovery channel. So many interesting programs there now.

Then there's Fox news though their site is better IMO.

Aliantha 10-30-2007 10:22 PM

fox news for entertainment or fox news for news? lol

As far as the educational channels go, I've been leaning toward the History Channel lately.

Aliantha 10-30-2007 10:32 PM

have you got a thing for dead germans data?

Drax 10-31-2007 12:26 AM

Huh?

Aliantha 10-31-2007 01:20 AM

my husband usually watches shows about WW1 or 2 on the history channel. Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you. I thought that was all they had on there. ;)

Drax 10-31-2007 02:46 AM

I've never seen those shows.

Here's what I've seen recently on THC:
  • The Real Dracula
  • Vampire Secrets
  • Cults: Dangerous Devotion
  • The Lost Book Of Nostradamus
  • The Haunted History Of Halloween

We do not have the History channel here in SE Asia. Maybe it's just not a channel in our cable package. If it were we'd probably be watching it.
