October 12, 2007: Camel birth
http://cellar.org/2007/camelbirth1.jpg
xoB sends along this set via this blog. I've never seen a camel birth before, but it looks not much different from other large mammal births. The best part is the last -- like other fresh-outs, when the baby gets its first licking from mama, it instinctively wobbles up on its weak pins to get its first milk. Unlike human infants, the young ones in the field have to be somewhat operational on day one. When there are predators around you have to be mobile, and there's no wasting time. On the other hand, it's cute as hell from the get-go. http://cellar.org/2007/camelbirth2.jpg http://cellar.org/2007/camelbirth3.jpg http://cellar.org/2007/camelbirth4.jpg http://cellar.org/2007/camelbirth5.jpg http://cellar.org/2007/camelbirth6.jpg http://cellar.org/2007/camelbirth7.jpg |

Put it over some hickory wood chips and you'll be smoking a Camel Light!

I'm surprised the camel is lying down. Usually most large animals give birth standing up. Perhaps that's why there was human intervention. Maybe there was a problem.
Did you know that even giraffes give birth standing up. Imagine the drop. If you were a baby giraffe, you'd want to hope your eyes were still closed. |
I reckon the camel couldn't trust the human not to put a nice pot of seasoned boiling water and a few veggies underneath to get a head start on dinner ;)

Now that is just so cute. :p
