Likely Outcome?

The new plan is to topple the Iranian government to stabilize Iraq. This will: work beautifully, start a world war, escalate the regional conflict, or rally support for homegrown dictators.

Spexxvet 08-31-2007 09:02 AM

IMHO every country with a Muslim majority will what they can to fuck us and our allies. I don't think they care about what they might lose from the west, they're happy to live in the 14th century.

DanaC 08-31-2007 09:03 AM

Wait a minute, the new plan is to what what?

what what? = bomb Iran

It is being reported that the big public relations blitz will come after the holiday in the US.

DanaC 08-31-2007 09:09 AM

Fuck. Seriously? I've been wrapped up in my own little local political situation lately (Council passed a vote to initiate early stages of school closure for a school in my ward) so haven't really been keeping up with the international scene....

DanaC 08-31-2007 09:11 AM

I can't find anything about on the BBC News site. It doesn't seem to have hit here as a news story yet.

Griff 08-31-2007 09:17 AM

Speculation- Lobe Raimondo and McGovern

The neo-cons consider all these guys to be the usual suspects but then again we all knew deep down that Bush wasn't stupid enough to invade Iraq.

glatt 08-31-2007 09:22 AM

The country is sick of war (for now anyway.)

I don't think Bush has the political power to do anything military in Iran. He may not care about a disapproving public because he doesn't have to worry about being re-elected, but it would be political suicide for any supporters. Therefore, nobody will support him. If he chose this path, he would be going it alone. Congress might even cut off funding like Nixon's Cambodia bombing.

I'm not POSITIVE I buy the buzz thats going around both the blogs and the news sites, but... it scares me, and it sounds like something the admin would do.

Rexmons 08-31-2007 10:36 AM

it does seem as if we're gearing up towards an attack on Iran. This video shows Fox New's pre Iraq - Invasion and compares it with the now possible Iran - Invasion, pretty interesting.

and a classic:

If it doesn't happen do these assholes take a hit? They sure like to sound smart by saying they knew all along. Huffpo had Gary Hart predicting the Iran invasion as an October surprise before the 2006 elections.

freshnesschronic 08-31-2007 11:26 AM

Great video find Rexmons.

xoxoxoBruce 08-31-2007 11:26 AM

Well, that would take care of our immigration question. Don't stand in front of the exits.

But seriously, I don't believe it.... if there is more than one person making such a decision.
The odds of getting more than one person that stupid, in the same place at the same time, are astronomical.

No. They get credit for rallying the opposition early enough to keep the neo-con push from being effective.

Unless you use Ronco's Stupid Lure TM. It lures stupid people - it can be sensed miles away. There's one in the RNC's headquarters. ;)

Would the military refuse if Bush gave the order?

glatt 08-31-2007 12:28 PM

Would Congress cut off funding if Bush gave the order? How's that work? Bush could drop the current arsenal of bombs but get no new ones? Bush could use the current supply of jet fuel, but buy no new fuel? Can Congress shut it down before it starts, or does it take a while?

Griff 08-31-2007 12:58 PM

They could pass a bill saying specifically that the use of military force against Iran is not authorized without prior Congressional approval. I would be amazed if Congress actually took back their constitutional authority though.

There has been rumors of an attack on Iran for the past three years now. Every time more "evidence" comes that an attack against Iran is coming and every time it doesn't happen. I don't think it is going to happen.

Yet, of course more evidence is piling. More and more newscasts are reporting Iranian responsibility to deaths of US soldiers and we declared Iran's Revolutionary Guards a terrorist group (source).

But lets say we do attack Iran.

Iran's army is not Iraq, they are much much stronger and have had many years to prepare for a US attack. Even if we do defeat their main army like we did to Iraq's, they are much more prepared in guerrilla warfare and they will be united, no more civil war, all attacks will be against our soldiers. If we do attack Iran, that will truly be a second Vietnam.

Also, I forget the name of the missiles they have, but I've read reports of how they have weapons that will tear through any ship we have in the Persian Gulf, in any waters.

That also doesn't have anything to do with what will happen to Iraq.

Then I am wondering what troops we are going to use. The ones in Iraq right now? That sounds very unconvincing, we can barely handle Iraq right now, we wouldn't stand a chance in Iran. If we pull the troops from Iraq what will happen to Iraq?

Looking at this, if we do attack Iran, I don't think we are going to do in the same way as Iraq. We would use much more bombing campaigns to archive our goals (what goals?).

Then we have to deal with Iran's relations with China, another mess.

When it comes down to it, attacking Iran will be hands down the stupidest thing Bush or any president has done in the past 100 years or maybe even the whole history of our country. Another reasons I don't think it will happen, I have doubts on our administration's intelligence but this is beyond dumb.

If we do attack Iran, I think I might start believing in conspiracy theories :tinfoil:.

Edit - BTW, if we do attack Iran, I will go to every anti-War with Iran protest that I can.

The evidence indicates that Iran is responsible for the deaths of American soldiers...

but not nearly as many as Bush.
