I'm Tired

Have you ever been so tired that you find it hard to stay awake at work?
Have you ever been so tired that every muscle in your body aches?
Have you ever been so tired that the thought of having to walk to your bed seems like too much effort?
Have you ever been so tired that your eye twitches constantly?

I've been feeling this way for about 2 months now.

I think I need a break.

lumberjim 08-16-2007 11:42 PM

i've been that tired. you need to take a chug of nyquil, and go to bed at 8pm

you'll wake up at 3 am...eat a huge bowl of cheerios or three and go back to sleep. maybe rub one out first if it helps you get back to sleep.

Aliantha 08-16-2007 11:45 PM

I go to bed at about 8:30pm most nights lately but I'm not sleeping properly. I think that's a big part of the trouble.

I decided that a night out with the girls might help me so last saturday I hit the town. I had two drinks and a game of pool and decided I needed to come home again.

It's very sad Jimbo. I think I might go see a doctor. The eye twitching thing is making me feel like a freak.

lumberjim 08-16-2007 11:52 PM

too much magnesium on your diet?

or if you believe doctors

Aliantha 08-17-2007 12:42 AM

Thanks for the link. So they say it's stress or tiredness that causes it? No shit! lol

Now all I need is to sleep better. I hardly drink coffee. I have one cup in the morning which is not very strong, and maybe one occassionally two later in the day. I could stop drinking coffee though. I somehow don't think that's the problem. You know, I've even been drinking warm milk before bed.

I think I should just shut up and go see the doctor. Thanks for indulging my whine though.

DanaC 08-17-2007 04:35 AM

Ali, it's most likely nothing sinister (let's face it, even a little hormonal flux can knock us for six from time to time, or you may just be anxious about something), but really, visit to the doctor is best. For all you know you could have developed something like sleep apnia and be totaly unaware of the fact.

Griff 08-17-2007 06:04 AM

You guys don't have lyme disease down there, do you?

Spexxvet 08-17-2007 08:42 AM

While I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV, it could be...

Sleep Apnea
depression
not enough exercise
stress
alcohol
drugs

I hope you feel better soon, Ali.

Aliantha 08-17-2007 07:43 PM

Hmmmm...I could probably be any except the last one i guess. The only drugs i take are to help me sleep. Those are the nights i sleep through but wake up feeling like shit.

Maybe i should just get some hooch and imbibe before bedtime.

DanaC 08-17-2007 07:47 PM

Or....go to the doctor. Any 'symptom' that continues for two months is worth checking on. Most likely be nothing, but best not to take any chances eh?

You have 2-3 cups of coffee a day?

Yeah. That is a lot, even if it doesn't sound like it. Depending on how big your "cups" are and how strong your coffee is, that's like drinking 4-8 sodas a day.

I used to have a caffeine addiction--of just one soda a day. I didn't know I was addicted, really, until I had to quit because of breastfeeding. (Actually, it was just one of many things I tried, and it ultimately turned out a different thing was causing the problem, but by then I'd already quit.) I went cold turkey. The first day was okay. The second day I was exhausted, and I passed out at 8:30 and slept until 10:00 am the next morning. So did the baby. Another day or two of extra sleeping, and from then on, I felt freaking awesome. I'm not kidding, it was revolutionary. I have since stayed off, even though I don't have to anymore, because of how much better I feel. I am actively campaigning for my husband to quit too, but he hasn't found a whole weekend he can sleep off yet, too much work going on right now.

I'm telling you, it's definitely worth a try. It's too late for this weekend, but plan it for the next one. No coffee starting Friday morning, have a friend or relative come help out with the kids so you can even out all weekend. It might not solve everything, but I guarantee you, you will feel so much better by Tuesday at the latest.

Aliantha 08-17-2007 10:06 PM

I get what you're saying here Clod, but really, I don't even drink coffee on the weekends unless i'm socializing. For example, I haven't had a coffee since Thursday morning to this stage (being lunch time Saturday). I don't work on Fridays and so don't have the same routine as other weekdays.

The coffee i drink is not very strong. Usually it's instant with only a level teaspoon of mild roast. I have it very milky in a fairly large mug. If I make myself a cup when I'm at work I usually have about two sips from the top and the rest goes cold. I could definitely go cold turkey from coffee. I'm pretty sure it's not that, but just to prove it to myself, I'll go without coffee or other caffeine products for the rest of the week.

I'll let you know if I'm going loopy. ;)

Aliantha 08-17-2007 10:07 PM

Oh, and in the mean time, I'm going to take myself to the doctor.

Shit, that's a lot? *grins* I drink waaaaay too much coffee. Some days I have two to three cups before I leave the house of a morning. If I am out and about I'll usually end up getting a coffee somewhere. Some days I just have three or four cups (well, mugs really) but other days I may have 8-10.

manephelien 08-18-2007 07:47 AM

Yeah, I drink a lot of coffee too. And certainly in Finland no doctor would dream of telling otherwise healthy women to quit drinking coffee completely either when pregnant or breastfeeding. Or they'd see a drop in birth-rate and an increase in infanticides. We're a nation of coffee drinkers, the average consumption (including babes in arms) is 160 gallons per year.

I hope you'll find out what caused the tiredness. I've been a bit run down lately as well, although sometimes it's worse than at other times. At one point it didn't matter how much sleep I got, I still felt tired.

DucksNuts 08-18-2007 10:20 PM

Ali - pee on the stick luv.

Aliantha 08-21-2007 03:26 AM

Did that. No luck. Now I'm bleeding like a stuck pig.

DanaC 08-21-2007 06:12 AM

Doctors.

B complex vitamins do wonders for me. I take them in pill form, but you can also get a shot in the ass once a month or something.

  • B1 – Thiamin - 1.2 mg/day for men and 1.1 mg/day for women to prevent deficiency and maintain good health.
Food Sources: Enriched grain products (bread, cereal, pasta), legumes, nuts & seeds, pork, and whole grains.
  • B2 – Riboflavin – is necessary for red blood cell formation, as well as for assisting with fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism. Also works to improve skin blemishes, migraines and in preventing the onset of cataracts. 1.3 mg/day for men and 1.1 mg/day for women.
Food Sources: Avocados, beef, dairy products, eggs, fish, fortified breads & cereals, liver, and mushrooms.
  • B3 – Niacin – is an effective aid for lowering cholesterol, as well as to promote healthy skin. Can also be used to treat depression, insomnia and arthritis. 16 mg/day for men and 14 mg/day for women.
Food Sources: Eggs, enriched grain products (bread, cereal, pasta), dairy products, and high protein foods (beef, chicken, fish & nuts).
  • B5 - Pantothenic Acid – works to promote a healthy Central Nervous System, as well as assist in energy production, and fight chronic fatigue, migraines, allergies and heartburn. Experts recommend taking 4-7 mg/day although there is no RDA for Pantothenic acid
Food Sources: Fish, legumes, organ meats, poultry, whole grains, and yogurt.
  • B6 – Pyridoxine – is needed for almost every function in the body, working as a coenzyme for numerous enzymes. Plays a major role in forming red blood cells, proteins and neurotransmitters, as well as stabilizing homocysteine levels. Can be used to relieve PMS and asthma attacks. 1.3 mg/day for men and women under the age 50; after 50, the RDA rises to 1.5 mg/day for women and 1.7 mg/day for men.
Food Sources: Avocados, bananas, chickpeas, fish, potatoes, poultry, and meat.
  • B12 – Cyanocobalamin – is essential to prevent pernicious anemia, which is caused by B12 deficiency. 2.4 mcg/day for adults to prevent a B12 deficiency
Food Sources: Animal foods (cheese, eggs, fish, meat, organ meats, oysters, sardines, and yeast).
  • Biotin is important to improve nail & hair health. Taking 30-100 mcg/day can keep you in good health although there is no RDA for this nutrient
Food Sources: Barley, cauliflower, legumes, liver, nuts, oatmeal, rice, soy, and whole wheat.
  • Folic acid - Essential during pregnancy to protect against birth defects; stabilizes homocysteine levels. 400 mcg daily for adults, although women of childbearing age are recommended twice that dose to prevent birth defects.
Food Sources: Beans, green vegetables, orange juice, and whole grains.
  • B12 - Cyanocobalamin - is needed to prevent anemia; promotes normal nerve growth and development by maintaining the fatty sheaths that cover and protect nerve ending synapses. It functions with Folic Acid in the formation and regulation of red blood cell synthesis, iron utilization, and nerve tissue growth, particularly to avoid the risk of neural tube defects during fetal development of pregnancy.
  • Cyanocobalamin has a metabolic role in the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important to memory and learning.

jester 08-21-2007 08:59 AM

There's also a B Complex that comes in a "liquid" form - ahh, liquid energy. I don't take it regularly, but when I do, I definetly feel a difference around 1:30 - 2:00 pm - that's when I am most tired. You can also take it atleast twice to three times a day. Also, your Iron may be low - I am border line anemic and that sometimes affects your "energy" levels as well.

Anemia?

I had those shots in the arse last month. oh.my.god. A person could get hooked on that shit.

Aliantha 08-21-2007 09:28 PM

I definitely don't have low iron. In fact, I have to be careful how much red meat I eat because I have a tendancy to have high iron levels.

Anyway, I'm going to go see the doctor later in the week. I"m sure they'll send me for the usual blood tests then stick a tube up my arse or something else more pleasant.

rkzenrage 08-27-2007 04:04 PM

Exercise and try and make sure you are drinking enough water.
Many who are tired all the time are dehydrated.
Sorry you are dealing with this.

Aliantha 08-29-2007 01:09 AM

I drink heaps of water. probably about 3 litres a day on average. When you live in a country with a warm climate, you learn to drink plenty of water. Aside from that, I like having clear skin.

Anyway, the eye twitch seems to have stopped, so that's good. I went to bed early every night for the last couple of weeks and I stopped drinking coffee etc. Had a domestic issue with hubby so didn't have to worry about talking to him for a few days.

Long story short, i'm feeling much better now. I think I'm going to live.

rkzenrage 08-29-2007 01:15 AM

Good to hear.

Aliantha 08-29-2007 02:08 AM

Thanks matey.

bluecuracao 08-29-2007 02:55 AM

Eek, are things OK with your man and you?

Aliantha 08-29-2007 02:58 AM

Oh yeah...he just pissed me off with something he said to me. We were arguing about our taxes. I ended up telling him to do what he wants with his money then. He apologized for being a dick.

All is well now. ;)
