August 6, 2007: Deer fishing

It's the Monday Neatorama collaboration image!

xoB finds this, in heavily e-mail-forwarded fashion, to be "making the rounds".

Last Saturday morning, my buddy Bo Warren and I were trolling for stripers in the Bay. We were 1 1/2 miles offshore in about 80 feet of water contemplating why the fish weren't biting. We looked back to check our gear and saw something odd in the water. Was it a seal?? Can't be, we don't have seals around here. On closer look, it turned out to be a buck deer that was WAY off course. He was desperate and barely staying afloat.

I've seen deer swim a river or bayou before. When you see that, the first thing you notice is that they are powerful swimmers. Their head and shoulders are out of the water and they make surprisingly good headway. This critter was just keeping his nose up and looked like he'd been swimming all night long. In fact, he was so worn out that he swam toward the boat probably thinking it looked enough like land to him. When he got closer though, he wasn't sure what to make of the two dudes on board, and backed off.

So, since the fish weren't biting, we thought we'd give this buck a hand.

Turns out Bo grew up around cows and was really handy with a bowline. He lassoed the deer on the first try!

Bo grabbed his neck, I grabbed the flank, and we barreled over backwards into the boat. Before I knew it, Bo was on top of him and had him tied up just like a calf.

We hit the throttle and shuttled him to the closest beach - Kent Point. I beached the boat and we carefully unloaded the deer onto the sand. The whole time we kept thinking he was going to kick the snot out of us. He never did though; he was totally spent. We untied him and jumped back. Too weak to stand, he just sat there quivering. We even picked him up again and put his feet underneath him, but he still couldn't walk.

Don't know if he made it or not, but I think his chances were vastly improved. Hopefully he recovered after time. When you're out & about, ya just never know...

talk about a BIG one!

Dypok 08-06-2007 03:45 PM

Unbelievable.

Uisge Beatha 08-06-2007 03:45 PM

That deer's lucky these guys didn't just pass the buck.

xoxoxoBruce 08-06-2007 03:47 PM

What a great promotion to sell boats and equipment to people that don't like seafood. Mmmmm buckfish.

Look at what's happened here. This poor deer swims 1½ miles from shore and is rescued by a marine named Bo; the story mentions trolling, stripers, and seals. Seems like a rare event and a tale with plenty to joke about. So where is everybody posting? Over in the Goring at Pamplona thread. OK, I get it. If the deer had a good set of antlers and attacked the fishermen, then everyone would come to have fun with the buck. :p

TheMercenary 08-06-2007 07:12 PM

Good on them. Saved one for the herd. Hopefully it will grow up big and give some body some really good meat and a set of antlers.

freshnesschronic 08-06-2007 07:13 PM

What the f?

What is it doing out there.

Ibby 08-06-2007 07:15 PM

No, REALLY man, it was THIS big!

Meanwhile, back on land, the rest of the herd is crumpling fenders and crashing through windshields.

DucksNuts 08-06-2007 07:41 PM

I would of done the same thing.

I am well known for animal rescues, especially my *tortoise rescue* escapades, which seems to always fall on a party nite when I am done up in my tarting gear.

If I see a tortoise on the road, I will make a mad dash onto the road in the rain and take it to which ever side of the road it was heading.

My friends just roll their eyes.

I had a real problem when I went and saw the Turtles, you arent allowed to help the poor little buggers get to the ocean, no matter what happens to them.

xoxoxoBruce 08-06-2007 07:47 PM

If you were wearing your "tarting gear", I'm sure you could not only have helped the little buggers, but all the guys would been falling all over each other to help.

rkzenrage 08-06-2007 08:53 PM

I almost hit a deer in an air-boat, scared the hell out of me, a HUGE gator got em' a few min later. Was wild, biggest gator I've ever seen, around 20'. I did not think they got that big.
This is not a fish story, it was on the Withlacoochee.

Turtles? What do you mean 'you can't help them get to the ocean, no matter what happens'? What turtles? What happens to them?

Bullitt 08-06-2007 10:47 PM

I've been camping in the Florida Keys on a very remote little speck of forested island and deer lived on the darn thing. The island wasn't huge either.

xoxoxoBruce 08-06-2007 10:51 PM

Key Deer, Bullitt.... they're natives.

Btw, I watched Bullitt on TV tonight, followed by Easy Rider.... good shit.

Bullitt 08-06-2007 11:55 PM

Both quality movies.. first viewing?

Yeah I have a picture of one of my buddies feeding one of 'em a Cheeto or something from his mouth.. whoops. I'll see if i can dig it up.

Nice work on that.. I want to do another trip so bad. It was amazingly cool kayaking through the thick mangroves, sharking fishing at night on a little 10'x10' floating dock in chest deep water, catching lobster with a stick and a net (it was the "mini season"), and keeping the damn 'coons (vacacoons?) from eating our food!

but back on topic.. that's awesome what those guys did. That deer could have easily gone ape-shit on them.

rkzenrage 08-07-2007 12:15 AM

The Townhouses on Key Largo are awesome, I think they are Best Western or Holiday Inn, but they were SWEET!

We *holidayed* on a hatchling island, hundreds of the little cuties are hatched out, but only a percentage of them make it to the ocean and then only a few will make it to breeding age.

When you are volunteering on the island, you are under strict instruction NOT to assist the babies in any way.

Its awful to watch them get stuck in a rock pool or something and not be able help.

Sometimes gulls get them or they just get too hot.

Its a bit like the wild life film crews arent to help any animals that they are filming.

Uisge Beatha 08-07-2007 05:58 AM

Gee, I had taken it a totally different way, Ducks. The capital "T" in Turtles and Bruce's highlighting of your 'tarting gear' had me thinking you had wanted to aid the aging Flo and Eddie. Philanthropy seemed to go right along with animal rescue.

DucksNuts 08-07-2007 06:36 AM

Totally not my type Bertha

spudcon 08-07-2007 10:52 AM

Flo and Eddie

Well then, who WILL take care of the old Turtles? I think that should be on the agenda at the next presidential debate!

Stayed at a B & B in Key West (theme was authors) after getting advanced open water scuba training in Islamorada. The night dive was amazing: phosphorescense.
i love the keys.

That deer is great. Cool that it let those guys help.

My first viewing? Hell no. I saw them both at the drive-in when they came out. Saw Bullitt in a '68 Charger and Easy Rider in a '69 Corvette. :driving:

I just watched "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" the other day...one of Hubby's fave movies. Our fave actor is Jeff Bridges. Fave movie w/JB is Starman. Another fave is "The Sandlot" w/ Karen Allen in a small part.

Anyway Ducks, I don't think I could sit and watch the little babies...I'd be wanting to scoop, guide and herd to the ocean. I wouldn't be able to volunteer, though I think it would be wonderful to watch the hatchlings. (but not see anything bad happen to them)
