Beauty Tips/Tricks?

Any tried and true tricks/tips?

I'm still searching for the perfect foundation. I want one thats sheer but offers decent coverage.

I havent been good to my skin in the past, no hats or sunscreen when I was younger, getting a good dose of burning in every summer, and hours n hours spent in the blistering Aussie sun.

Now, I wear sunscreen under my makeup everyday and do wear a hat.

I dont drink enough water and I often go to bed with my makeup on.

I do swear by Palmers Moisturizing Body Oil, I put it in the bath or rub on before I get out of the shower....it smells devine and makes my skin feel lovely.

rkzenrage 07-24-2007 01:54 AM

Believe it or not, that mineral base that they sell on TV works great, you can get it at Origins too. Pretty sure it's called "Bare Minerals". My wife uses it, she has rosatia and she loves it. It holds very well and has a nice look. It blends well, which is a big thing for me.
I used Philosophy make-up for close-up theatre and print work. It is my favorite, by far. (It was originally designed for burn victims and people with allergies. Print make-up artists discovered it and it exploded in the art scene... I'm going to stop now or I'll write a book on it)
If I could not get that, Mac... but I don't like anything with aluminum in it.
I really like Mac brushes and real hair, high-end painters brushes the best.
I would try those three for foundation. They are expensive, but all three don't take much... so don't be daunted.

What kind of tips are you looking for?
Moisturizing is paramount. Use NOTHING with oatmeal. Cool teabags or cukes on the eyes really works. (save mint and/or green tea after you use it, put it in a zip bag or plastic tub in the fridge), works & feels great on tired looking eyes. It is also an awesome excuse to have a bit of down time... you can't be disturbed while blind.

Go to bed with your make-up on huh?
Every so often you need a steam. Pot of very hot water on your table (trivet), towel over your head and steam your face for as long as you can stand it.
While water is still hot dip towel into it, not so hot it will burn you -duh, wrap it around your face, then go to your bathroom and wash your face with good cleansing face wash.
The best I have found is actually very inexpensive and lasts forever. Oil of Olay for sensitive skin. It comes in a pump at grocery stores and local drug stores.
If you put a bit of mint tea into the water it will help your pores to open and help it work.
The first couple of times you do this you may break-out a bit... brings a lot of dirt out.
I did it a lot, used a lot of oil based make-up every night, yuck.

Oh, put the moisturizer on, sparingly, after you get out of the shower... seals in the moisture, better for your skin and lasts longer.
It works very well with just a bit of baby oil, either kind, but I like the cream. Sure it will work fine with yours though.

Warm-up a bit of olive oil, microwave works well... wait until it is just very warm. Rub it into your hair and scalp. Let sit for an hour or two. Wrap in towel so you don't drip.
Wash out, lightly condition. Glow. This works very well if you have any scalp problems at all.

Aliantha 07-24-2007 02:57 AM

I use oil of olay every night before I go to bed and never go to sleep with makeup on. There's nothing that makes my skin feel worse I reckon.

I've just discovered a brilliant moisturizer by Shisedo which is called Future Solution. It's fantastic, so I'm going to swap to that for my night time and use the olay for during the day because you can get one with a sunscreen in it.

The best foundation is not a foundation. Again it's Shisedo and it's called powdery foundation. It's like a powder compact but all I do is put on my daily moisturizer and then a light dusting of powdery foundation over the top. I have found it to be the best because it doesn't make my skin feel greasy through the day, and it seems to stay on and not get creases so quickly.

Drink lots of water. That'll give you the clearest complexion of all. I can always see it in my face when I haven't been drinking enough water.

DucksNuts 07-24-2007 05:55 AM

Wow RK, you are a wealth of information. I am looking into those foundations ...thanks :)

Ali - shall have a look at that Shisedo powder. I actually have the Jane Iredale powder, blush n eyeshadow...and quite like it. The powder just doesnt even out the complexion enough for my liking.

Time to treat yourself to a visit with the local aesthetician. He or she -- if they are worth a salt (Dead Sea, preferably ;) )-- should be able to do a facial using the correct exfoliant for your skin type and then all the rest of the nine yar... I mean metres. Just ask them for a list of the products used.

DucksNuts 07-24-2007 06:18 PM

I do go get a dermabrasion (sp?) mthly and an oxygen kiss facial.

I just got this stuff called The Mini Lift...its awesome!!

Not!

Dude, you had me goin until that part about hair care. :lol2:

Cloud 07-24-2007 07:26 PM

hot oil treatment--time tested and beneficial, particularly for coarse, dry hair

bluecuracao 07-24-2007 07:41 PM

I once got a big jar of coconut oil, but I forgot it at my mother's house and she tossed it after a few months. :( I don't really have dry hair; I mostly wanted to be coconut-scented. Would coconut oil be too intense for non-dry hair?

Foundation doesn't sit well on my skin for some reason, so I just use a coverstick where I need it, and dust on translucent powder. I end up blotting it all off by the end of the day, of course.

monster 07-24-2007 09:28 PM

put a chapstick (with sunscreen) in the ashtray of your car (or in a similar position if you smoke), and a huge pump moisturizer in the driver's door pocket or in the console between the passenger and driver. Apply at red lights. Chapstick at short lights, moisturizer to hands (and face if no makeup) at longer ones.

Also have sunscreen in the car.

Cloud 07-24-2007 09:31 PM

baking soda mixed with a little liquid soap makes a wonderful and cheap exfoliator.

smurfalicious 07-25-2007 07:30 AM

I use oatmeal as a mask - make it pasty and apply to face, let dry, wash off, or egg whites. Tea bags on the eyes (get your mind out of the gutter) are great and refreshing, more so than cucumbers. Epsom salts are great for a foot/hand soak - leaves skin soft.

Foundation: I'm part Native American so I have a darker complexion and have a hard time matching make-ups to my skin tone. I have sensitive and oily skin and I'm also frugal, so I use a water based Almay product. I slightly dampen my make-up sponge before applying foundation because I hate thick foundation and only need minimal coverage.

Powder: I mix an Almay translucent powder (which is never really translucent) with a bronzing powder to get the right color. It adds a sunkissed glow and works well with my skin tone.

Cleansers: I do spend more on the cleansers. I love Clinique's facial cleanser in a pump bottle that I keep in the shower. I also use Clinique's toner. I have 2 bottles - one for oily skin that I use in the spring/summer/fall and then a lighter, more moisturizing one in the winter when my skin gets really dry. Several local department stores have sales on the Clinique merchandise once a month or so so I get it cheaper than the regular price. I like it because it doesn't dry out my skin - seems to get the job done without the harshness of other products. I used to use witch hazel but I just can't stand the smell - it makes my stomach turn.

Moisturizer: Oil of Olay makes me a zit face. I use either a Mary Kay product in a white bottle, or usually I use this seaweed crap in a blue/green jar from Bath and Body Works - and it smells real nice.

Hime 08-10-2007 04:42 PM

I love Bare Minerals foundation. I also love the Body Shop concealer, especially because it isn't tested on animals.

One of my favorite skin tips: to avoid those little red bumps after shaving your legs, mix a small amount of cortisone cream in with lotion and rub it on your legs before they're completely dry. Makes them smooth and beautiful.

Cloud 08-10-2007 06:27 PM

Read, "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me" by Paula Begoin.

DucksNuts 08-11-2007 10:59 PM

I like the sound of that Hime, thanks.

I havent heard of that book Cloud, but will look into it.

Cloud 08-12-2007 11:04 AM

Here's Paula Begoin's web site: http://www.cosmeticscop.com/default.asp

The book is really better than her website, because she independently examines and tests each product (makeup, skin care, and hair care). She lists ingredients that are good and bad, what works, and what is worth the money.

The book is big and expensive, so I always just sneak into my local Barnes & Noble if I want to look something up. E.g., I need new blush, but want to know what's recommended.

My beauty tip for the day: Lots of water and enough sleep do wonders.

wolf 08-12-2007 01:10 PM

For what you've spent on gas to go look at the book, you probably could have bought the book.

Cloud 08-12-2007 05:55 PM

Well, that's a good point. But I visit the bookstore regularly anywhere. And she keeps coming out with updates!

lumberjim 08-12-2007 06:05 PM

rage, you used to be a beautician I presume?

rkzenrage 08-13-2007 01:35 AM

Actor.
Use a lot of make-up and a lot of it is really rough on your skin. & A lot of the hair stuff is rough on your hair & scalp, were the hot/warm olive oil comes in (& it does work GREAT).

I want to repeat, oatmeal feels good when you use it, but, in the long run it dries you out. That is why so many lotions have it... you keep having to use more of their product... scam.

Cloud 08-13-2007 09:05 AM

that's why oatmeal baths are good for rashes and especially supperating sores--it dries them out.

Pie 08-13-2007 12:21 PM

I'm wysiwyg. No makeup. Well, chapstick.

jinx 08-13-2007 12:34 PM

Proactive cleanser, Olay moisturizer, Great lash mascara.

Flint 08-13-2007 10:58 PM

Does anybody actually read this kind of thing?

In the shower, when I put conditioner in my hair, I comb it exactly the way I am going to style it. Then, after all my other shower business (including shaving and brushing my teeth) I rinse my hair in that same direction. When I towel it off, I run it in that same direction. While moisturizing, I run regular lubriderm lotion through my hair, with my fingers. I let the waves "set" while I get dressed. Last thing, before I leave the house, I comb it through one time, and put on a coat of spray wax. I don't touch it again until it is has air-dried.

Undertoad 08-13-2007 11:26 PM

John Edwards??

Sun_Sparkz 08-14-2007 05:21 AM

LOL. Thanks Flint, Ill give that one a go.

Pass the brill creme..

Cicero 08-14-2007 11:27 AM

Avon skin- so -soft is a bug repellant. Not sure if the ingredients are more or less dangerous than "Off" but I am definitely giving it a try. Plus- I smell pretty.
BTW (a guy gave me my first bottle and recommended it)

wolf 08-14-2007 01:07 PM

SSS as a bug spray is useless. Stick with the DEET.

jinx 08-14-2007 01:24 PM

As a bug spray its useless, but it does attract deer.

We believe that here on Arran, too! Our Avon laides do a roaring trade in it as we have the smallest fiercest midges on Earth!

Cicero 08-14-2007 02:36 PM

Alright....I don't know yet.....about "SSS"
I am allergic to these mosquitos down here...I'm trying anything......you should see what the little buggers did to my neck.... I also heard it from separate sources. Has anyone else actually tried it and found that it doesn't work as a repellant?

smurfalicious 08-14-2007 02:54 PM

SSS works fabulously on the skeeters down here in swampy South Florida. My family has been using it for 30 years. http://www.comicguide.net/images/smilies/fliege.gif

Oddly, mosquitos do not bite me. They land on me, but they don't like the way I taste, apparently. Someone once told me that it could be because of my Native American blood... http://www.thehealthymom.com/wp-cont...tion/dunno.gif

lumberjim 08-14-2007 02:57 PM

I have

rkzenrage 08-14-2007 03:30 PM

Studies have shown the only thing that actually works on mosquitoes is deet.
The SSS that works is the one with deet.

jester 08-14-2007 04:48 PM

I've always heard that "uping" your B Vitamins help with Mosquito Bites, as in helps repel them.

lumberjim 08-14-2007 05:00 PM

I've upped my B vitamins.....now up yours!

jester 08-14-2007 05:07 PM

sheathe them claws, girlfriend - actually i expected something a little more along the lines of "i've heard....." (subsandwich post)

smurfalicious 08-14-2007 05:13 PM

I don't need studies to tell me that when I put the stuff on, it works.

lumberjim 08-14-2007 05:14 PM

rowr!

Cicero 08-14-2007 05:34 PM

Hey- thanks smurf. You guys have to be the mosquito experts down there.
I've also been taking B vitamins recently. (orally) Hopefully that helps.

jinx 08-14-2007 05:39 PM

Does not work against mosquitos or black flies in the Adirondaks. Tried it many times over the years because of the people who kept insisting it worked.

bluecuracao 08-14-2007 07:13 PM

Damn, B vitamins don't work for me. I take them fairly regularly, and still get bit.

Cicero 08-16-2007 06:00 PM

It's working.....the SSS is working! (I haven't been regular with the B vitamins but I put the SSS on every night now). I've spent 2 nights in the yard- I usually get bitten at least once and expand like a red flesh baloon. I'm serious! It's soo perfumey and the smell gets annoying. But by god, I think it's working! I'll update if the mosquito drama changes....

Cloud 08-16-2007 07:21 PM

3 cases of West Nile virus in my town this year. :(

Fortunately, I live up on the hill and not in the valley.

DEET is evil. I once put on Maxi-Deet when I worked in the States, then attempted to write with a Bic pen. The pen melted. (& I still got bitten). Marmite has masses of Vitamin B. Slap that on your toast. It does little for Midges but they think it tastes nice & is low fat.

:D

Same thing happens to me Smurf, they buzz right over me and bite the shit out of my husband

BrianR 02-05-2008 10:26 PM

oddly, I hear that a diet rich in garlic (tablet form will work) does the trick on skeeters. I could test this as I'm in Lakeland, near Orlando right now but I'm lazy.

I had a neighbor who gave her dog garlic daily and it never had a flea despite a bad infestation in the area. My vet tells me that garlic is toxic in dogs but hers never seemed affected.

monster 02-05-2008 11:35 PM

DEET the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

We eat more garlic in one meal than the whole of France does in a year, but still get badly bitten unless we use the evil DEET

Aliantha 02-05-2008 11:47 PM

If you're having your garlic cooked it doesn't have the same medicinal properties.

Have it raw and see how that works for you. ;)
