Why did you come to the Cellar?

Why did you come to the Cellar?

What brought you upon this website?

Who directed you to this link?

How did you come about this virtual space?

Me, I came because I was searching the Internet for relationship advice (wtf right?) and I came upon some internet forums. So I figured I should get involved in one that looked nice and casual. And here I am, maybe liked, definitely hated, but still representing my own outlook on life, liberty and the pursuit of relationship advice.

edit: sorry if this thread already exists, damnit

Aliantha 07-23-2007 01:04 AM

I came here through some posters on another forum which closed down. Those other posters are no longer here, but I remain.

NoBoxes 07-23-2007 03:37 AM

I was abandoned here under the Safe Haven Law for newbees.

xoxoxoBruce 07-23-2007 03:39 AM

Urbane Guerrilla 07-23-2007 03:58 AM

It's there.

DucksNuts 07-23-2007 05:02 AM

Ali.... were you an AGer?

ravenranter 07-23-2007 05:02 AM

I dropped in randomly, read threads for awhile, bookmarked the site and have been coming back daily ever since.

Are you an Ex UOer? If not then the Safe Haven ref is pure coincidence:P

I actually cannot recall how I first ended up here. I have a vague recollection of a friend of mine (ex-guildmate from when I was into gaming) telling me about some forum that he used to go on and wind people up pretending to be a really right-wing, neo-con type. Not sure, but that might have been the Cellar he was talking about.

That's why I sometimes suspect people like UG of being fake:P

That may be why I came here......or it might not...i can't recall.

What I do recall, is that I was living on my own for the first time, had also fallen off the gaming circuit, and was trawling the internet, fairly bored, on a fairly regular basis. Either way, I ended up in the Cellar, at a time when I was most in need of an easily accessible and engaging community. What was strange about the Cellar, was that unlike most forums I'd meandered through, the Cellar drew me back. It feels not dissimilar to the kind of dynamic involved in some gaming communities, rather than the usual forum dynamic.

I think UT put an invite in a Libertarian list serve we both subscribed to. thanks Toad!

piercehawkeye45 07-23-2007 07:00 AM

I was searching for the "military authorization act" (or whatever it was called) and found this.

glatt 07-23-2007 07:25 AM

Probably an IotD that was linked somewhere else, but I can't remember. Through Fark maybe?

I was at a crossroads in my life and was seeking input, advise, thoughts from outside my norm. For awhile I siply drifted thruogh, but became more engaged the more I read. I found it to be a great place to interact with people from very different backgrounds all over the world with whom I would have no other chance of interacting. The differing perspectives and opinions are very enlightening.

Uisge Beatha 07-23-2007 07:53 AM

If I recall correctly, I followed a Fark link to the IotD my first time in. I returned occassionally for more images and started reading some, too. After the better part of two years had passed I realized I was stopping by to read quite often and had a couple of thoughts to post so I finally registered.

theotherguy 07-23-2007 08:27 AM

I Googled something and the cellar came up as the second or third link. I can't remember what the search was for. That will drive me crazy the rest of the day.

It was whale penis.

SteveDallas 07-23-2007 09:03 AM

Yeah. Whale Penis. It had to be the whale penis.

Well my FIRST time discovering The Cellar (c. 1991), I was looking through a listing of ads for Philadelphia-area BBSs. There was one that was an island of text in a sea of misbegotten ASCII & ANSI graphics. "Wow," I thought, "words."

Fast forward to 2002. I had not called The Cellar in ages... I just got out of the habit, though I believe it was still around all that time, including a stint as a Telnet service (which I logged on to a couple times). I was doing some searching on the Wayback Machine, and for some reason it occured to me to pop cellar.org in and see what was there. (The last time I had been active, the WWW as we know it today barely existed.)

Because intelligent people with thoughtful, insightful posts outnumber drivel spouting idgits 2 to 1.

jester 07-23-2007 09:34 AM

I have a cousin who lives in Canada and he sent an email to me with a heading "How can you tell a guy took this picture". The link brought me here and I looked it over and decided to join.

Soap Operas can't compare to this place.

TheMercenary 07-23-2007 09:47 AM

I was in search of a forum with a larger more diverse group than the two local ones that I am regularly involved in. Google search. Somehow I got here.

Preparing to threadjack are you?
Let it be.

There was a dialup line within my local calling area. I picked The Cellar off a list of BBSes in Delaware Valley Computer User, a free newspaper that I used to pick up at Tower Records.

I have just realized there are a number of anachronisms in my post. I will just add that I had to drive uphill in the snow both ways to get to the Tower Records, where I frequently purchased Cassette Tapes and the occasional book. My car had a manual transmission, no power steering, no air conditioning, and an AM Radio.

smurfalicious 07-23-2007 02:22 PM

I saw all the love, warmth, welcome, support, guidance, and intelligent conversation that could only lead me to believe I found future epic of boards.

That, and there was a post about http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3..._void/av-1.gif.

Happy Monkey 07-23-2007 02:23 PM

I think it must have been an IOTD via Fark, but the event has sadly been lost in the sands of time.

Shawnee123 07-23-2007 02:56 PM

Someone sent me a link to an IoTD. It was a giant bunny that had fallen onto a mountain top from a great height, and all of it's guts were spread around.

I only entered the Cellar through the IoTD.php link for about two years, because I was afraid to look behind the curtain. That was Phase I, Acclimatization.

One day I saw an IoTD-worthy image (orangutan babies and tiger cubs), and joined to submit it. That was the beginning of Phase II, Indoctrination.

On a professional board, someone posted a picture of a cat with giant eyes. I checked "properties" and they lead me here. I was entertained, and a bunch of posters are from the Philadelphia area, like me.

monster 07-23-2007 06:51 PM

I was googling for some weird image and came across the "What the Fuck" thread.

More specifically, this:

Now let's play "guess what search terms monster was using?"

Other: It's nice to talk to people who aren't half-brained twelve-year old video game addicts who speak in leet.

Weird Harold 07-24-2007 05:28 PM

I haven't been here that long, and I don't remember. If I had to guess, I'd say Stumble Upon. I voted for other/ it's enormity, but I don't really think of this place as big. I think it's intimate, that's why I came here. One of the forums I looked into was Something Awful. It had good points, but it was just so freakin huge, that I could never keep up with it.

freshnesschronic 07-24-2007 06:24 PM

Other and it's enormity, I meant like the vast number of "other" reasons why people came here. Not cause the Cellar itself is quite large.

Weird Harold 07-26-2007 07:08 PM

Well that's another reason I joined to learn things. I used to belong to a home decorating forum. It was like they were speaking a foreign language, and I read some where that trying to learn a different language delays the onset of alzheimer's.

steambender 07-27-2007 12:16 AM

My first glimpse of the Cellar was a picture of Wolf gleefully holding a firearm I was googling.

love at first sight. I lurked for over a year, and in a burst of wild exuberance, decloaked.

Crimson Ghost 07-28-2007 12:52 AM

I was watching "Donnie Darko", and the phrase "cellar door" stuck in my head, and I ran it thru Google.

Cicero 07-28-2007 01:07 PM

My registration at IIDB was rejected. Unbelievable....

fargon 07-28-2007 01:45 PM

One day I took the tin foil out of my hat and the voices told me to come here and infect all I came across.
Listen to the voices, and help me take over the universe.:fsm: :vader1:

Madman 07-31-2007 10:06 AM

Honestly, I don't remember. But that's not unusual. What was the question?

Shawnee123 07-31-2007 10:07 AM

Who was that Mad (masked) Man? ;)

rkzenrage 07-31-2007 12:33 PM

What no "why do you cum on the Cellar" clone?

skysidhe 08-04-2007 11:40 PM

like right now. Im just bored.

Originally it was to mingle with the pretentious snobs *wink*

 omg I'll never tell you who said that. I'll take its secret to my grave.

Stormieweather 08-05-2007 10:37 AM

Someone linked the IoTD on another board I belong to, I followed the link and began to browse the Cellar. I found an interesting thread on sex education in schools and made my first post (and second and third). I didn't get my head bashed in, so I stayed :D .

Trilby 08-05-2007 10:49 AM

I googled Whale Penis. You guys popped right up.

VB programming class, 10th grade, after a serious session of Tribes but before an Age of Empires II match on the class network. My buddy said he found more people in the world with our peculiarly balanced blend of open-mindedness and cynicism, and they were on this one board. The rest is the rest.
