Cellar Pronunciation
 

When I met Dana last week, I found myself tripping up over her pronunciation of some Dwellars' names. The way you sometimes do when you discuss fantasy novels with someone (this also happened)

Three that stand out in my memory are:
Rkzenrage:
RIXen-rage vs ar-kay-ZEN-rage

Marichiko:
mar-ITCHY-co vs mari-CHI-ko

Brianna:
BRY-anna vs BREE-anna

Just wondered how other Dwellars hear these in their heads.
And whether there are any others open to interpretation.

Here is how those have been for me:

Rick's-in-rage (as in a state of emotion)

Mar-itchy-co

Bree-ahnna

ARK-zen-rage ... doesn't make any sense, but once I "hear" something a certain way, that's it

and bluecuracao

i just call rage rage.

pilot hi-jinx - but only because I read it explained that way once

blue CURE-a-so (that's the way I pronounce the drink YMMV)

I realised I call you LJ and Undertoad UT in conversation. How lazy.

pillthy jinx - as in filthy jinx, but with a "p."

blue cure-a-sou (ou as in ouch)

blue "kur-keh-row" ... because I've never heard the name of the stuff pronounced, and I sort of approximated the letters involved

OK. That makes so much more sense. I do think I remember reading something about a pilot now. I really should pay more attention.

I pronounce Brianna in my head as "bree-AHNA," but when it's shortened to Bri, it's "breye." No, I can't explain it, that's just the way it is.

I've always read that as filthy jinx, which is kind of cool. Even though the pilot thing makes more sense, once I've heard it as one thing I find it difficult to alter :P

Well, my user name is pronounced in the US as rich-leevee.

The Australian pronunciation is ko-willa-walla-bong. Not to be confused with ko-walla-willa-bonk, which is their word for grapefruit.:p

Wait, really? Just goes to show, you can't assume anything... I've always read "LEV-ee," because that's how the other guy I know with that last name pronounces it.

I say it as in "drove my Chevy to the levee"

But yeah, when I am bitching about ewes to someone....I mean IF!!! I was, I would use the abbreviated versions too...LJ, UT etc :)

I say SG and Dana if I'm talking to someone in real life (usually only my husband cause if I told too many people about this place and the convo's that go on, they'd think I was insane.)

I think Dana has one of the easiest names. Then again, you can't go too far wrong with Flint either.

i've mentioned this before...and it really wasn't all that funny then, but if i keep trying, i just know that some new people will see the humor, and it will be a great sucess.

my name is easy to pronounce. it's the inflections that you're probably doing wrong. you see, my actual name is Lum. Lum Berjim.

And all this time I've been saying Lumb Erjim.

My full name (HLJ = HungLikeJesus) is pronounced Hung Like Hay-zeus, for the alliteration.

I pronounce it "Lumberg Jim" ...

I really need rkzenrage to post here and let us know which is the correct pronunciation.

Now this might sound silly up front, but bear with me. I currently just think of xoxoxoBruce as, well, Bruce. However, for a short while after slipping into the Cellar I had an association building with his name, similar to the way Flint has a lock on something once he "hears" it a certain way. For some ridiculous reason I had tried to pronounce Bruce's whole username and came up with something along the lines of zo-zo-zo-Bruce. This made me think of Jimmy Page's symbol from the fourth Zeppelin album. In all honesty, I wonder if anyone else has ever tied Bruce to Zoso.

I think of xoxoxoBruce as "hugs and kisses Bruce," whatever that means. (or sometimes as XOB = sob)

I always pronounce it 'Bruce' but I also get a mental image of Oxo gravy cubes.

I prefer the one-syllable pronunciation, "uht". Rhymes with BUTT.

I found a new way for Labrat to say her name:

Ahhhh, after a little hint, I get it now :). Chemistry wasn never my strong suit. In fact, I rather detest it...

Hopefully everyone knows cicero, I say siss-er-o.....And even I pronounce it wrong.
It's really pronounced Chik-er-O. It means doo-doo. (cow) Which is why he was advised to change his name before his stint in politics......

The liquer is pronounced "cure-a-sow" or something like that, though most say curr AH ko.

Yup, it's 'cure-a-sow.' No tilde though, just a cedilla on the c...though I thought Curaçao was a Dutch word. Not sure how a cedilla got in there.
