Pop, soda, cola, POLL

I just gave you a cup to go to a magic soda fountain that has 4 chioces, and you have to pick one. Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Coke, Diet Coke, and Other. The Other catagory is if your favorite pop (soda, cola, whatevah) is something else, like Sierra Mist, or Dr. Pepper, or Sunkist or something. Just think about what you want, and it will dispense it for you, with the perfect amount of ice.

I have cut my pop consumption down to a max of 48 oz a week, with my favorite choice being Pepsi, second ed closely by Dr. Pepper. Diet pop? :greenface I'd rather drink curdled camel's milk.

Happy Monkey 05-16-2007 11:55 AM

Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper.

Wow, that's a whole lot going on!

You get used to diet, and I prefer the bite of Diet Coke. But some days I just love a jolt of real sugar!

glatt 05-16-2007 12:05 PM

Where can you get real sugar?

I stopped drinking my can of Pepsi with lunch every day a couple years ago. Saves me $120 a year. Not to mention there's nothing good for you in soda. It's crap.

bbro 05-16-2007 12:06 PM

I can't drink any diet pops because they give me an asthma attack (I think because of the fake sugar). I do love me some regular Coke though. Preferably not in can or bottle, but in fountain form from a restaurant.

Happy Monkey 05-16-2007 12:20 PM

Apparently you can order Dr Pepper with real sugar. I've never gotten around to it, but I'd be curious.

Jone's soda is real sugar.

I drink soda maybe once or twice a year, usually becuase its the only beverage choice, and I don't care what kind it is - except Mt Dew. Fuck that.

Shawnee123 05-16-2007 12:30 PM

What are non-diet pops made of if not sugar? Fake sugar but not diet fake sugar? What's the advantage of manufacturing fake sugar that isn't diet fake sugar? I'm so confused!

Generally they're High Fructose Corn Syrup - not sugar. HFCS is evil stuff - and from what I've read, the only advantage is that once upon a time, HFCS was dirt cheap..although I've heard that some companies are changing back to cane sugar because Corn is getting expensive due to it being used in alternative fuels.

Give me some water with a slice of lemon any day.

It has to do with some sort of import penalties for whatever country makes most of the sugar, IIRC (AIMN*), combined with corn subsidies, which makes the corn syrup cheaper.

*and I might not

Shawnee123 05-16-2007 12:46 PM

So will the ethanol thing make it more expensive to get HFCS now? That whole alternative fuel debate just keeps going deeper!

elSicomoro 05-16-2007 01:04 PM

The Dublin Dr Pepper Bottling Company still uses real sugar in their Dr Pepper. And I can tell you from personal experience that there is definitely a difference...the Dublin stuff is way better. You can order it directly from them or buy it in high-end grocery stores. Here, I can get it at Straub's. It costs more, but I think it's worth it.

I've also noticed at some of the Latino grocery stores here in St. Louis that you can find Mexican Pepsi, Coke, Sprite, etc. with sugar, at a higher price.

Pie 05-16-2007 01:21 PM

You can also get "kosher for passover" versions of coke, etc. that are made with real sugar.

xoxoxoBruce 05-16-2007 01:37 PM

Most of our sugar comes from beets, I believe, very little cane.

Spexxvet 05-16-2007 02:35 PM

Waste Watchers Rootbeer - it's sweetened with Splenda

I didn't know that - So thanks for the input. *filing away that tidbit for trivia night*

Good grief, I drink more than that a day. Every day. Diet Coke.

I am a bad person.

lumberjim 05-16-2007 07:05 PM

given the choice based purely on flavor and enjoyment...i'm all about a nice glass bottle of Mountain Freakin Dew (goes great with a nice fat jernt). FU, jinx.

buuuuut.....when it comes to what I actually would choose in real life with my fatness in mind....Diet Coke. Caffeine free, no less. I use it to color my Captain Morgan.

DucksNuts 05-16-2007 07:10 PM

Coke Zero.

I cant stand Diet Coke, but love Coke Zero. I always love Dry Ginger Ale (great for morning sickness) or Ginger Beer...plus 95% of the time its Zero.

Happy Monkey 05-16-2007 07:34 PM

Stewart's Key Lime
Boyland's Black Cherry

Urbane Guerrilla 05-16-2007 09:29 PM

Coca-Cola Goes Nutritive?!

I'll have to look into that root beer, Spexx. I like a good root beer.

The latest wrinkle in Diet Coke is the blue-and-rainbow-labeled one --

with the vitamins added. :eek6: and maybe  .

I like it, though; it tastes about midway between old Diet Coke's astringent bite and CokeZero. We just bought us a twelver.

I think whether your sugar is beet sugar or cane depends on where you are. I grew up in beet-sugar country in the interior but I never see the stuff at all now that I live on the coasts. I figure it's the shipping costs that decide it, considering how low sugar prices are.

Reed's Ginger Beer would be my Other selection. Zippity do dah, this is what made the preacher dance. Probably made him burp, too. Strong ginger flavor. It'd be the right ginger brew to take with ginger Altoids.

HungLikeJesus 05-16-2007 11:33 PM

For about the last two years I've been cutting back on Coke, also, but not enough. A friend of mine recently referred to it as "liquid diabetes."

The "real sugar" debate reminds me of the Colorado DOT claiming that they don't use salt on the roads, they use magnesium chloride. From what chemistry I remember, magnesium chloride is salt.

I took a Behavior Mod class a while back. A bunch of folks took the opportunity to break their soda habit... It is wicked hard if you've been at it a while.

I drink the occasional Coke, but am going to cut even that back. All this stuff is nasty nasty.

bbro 05-17-2007 07:30 AM

I completely forgot about my most favorite pop in the world! Mint Ginger Ale! Can't wait to go back home and bring like 8 bottles back with me.

Secret hint for those who want sugar and not HFCS: you have to cross the border for the good stuff (or just drop in at your local Latino mart)

Oh, and keep your soda unless it's being used as a mixer.

Happy Monkey 05-17-2007 10:26 AM

IBC Cream Soda

bluecuracao 05-17-2007 07:18 PM

If I have a soda, I like Orangina or whatever brand of ginger beer I'm lucky to find around here. If a store near me stocked ginger beer all the time, I'd drink it a lot more.

Occasionally, one big swig of icy Coke really hits the spot.

I've never noticed packaged sugar being labeled as to the plant source. Don't have a package in the house to check, though. Cattle love the dried pulp left over from extracting sugar from beets.

rkzenrage 05-18-2007 01:50 AM

Dr. Pepper.
Then, Root Beer, Orangina and Ginger ale/beer (there is a good Jamaican brand you can get here in FL that is strong and good)

Send it to Philly, please!

xoxoxoBruce 05-18-2007 01:01 PM

What brand, maybe it's available on the net?

Clodfobble 05-19-2007 05:40 PM

IBC Black Cherry soda.

The key for me is it has no caffeine. God, I can't wait until I can start having that again, if for no other reason than your drink choices are severely reduced at restaurants.

skysidhe 05-20-2007 03:23 PM

coke first then pepsi

cowhead 05-21-2007 03:43 PM

tea/coffee and water... although if it were from the above choices, it'd have to be coke. weird thing about the south is that in a restaurant when you ask for a coke they ask
waitress: 'what kind?'.
me: ' Uh, a coke..'
waitress ' I KNOW! what kind of coke, mountain dew, sprite, rootbeer.. etc'
me: 'uh.. just the caffeinated brown kind that they make there in Atlanta.. red can, you know..'
waitress: "oh! a coke"
me: puzzled look.

I've heard that, too.

Thanks to those who followed the instructions. [/anal TA] Personally, if asked what I'd like to drink, my first choice would be iced tea or water, but that wasn't the question :)

Interesting stats so far. I really had no idea the outcome, that's why I did the poll. I should have made the Other catagory two, Reg Other and Diet Other.

Merci pour vous participation.

wolf 05-22-2007 04:55 PM

Absolutely Coke.

I took the Pepsi Challenge back when they were first doing it, despite being warmer and watered down, I still prefered the Coke.
