I may be leaving the internets

Our service contract with our ISP is about to expire. I am strongly considering letting the internet go. I spend way too much time on the internet that is not at all productive, and often at the expense of working or being with my family.
(since I am self employed, it makes a difference)

For the rare "legitimate" uses I have for the internet: research and online ordering, I do very little of that anyway and could use either the library or a friend's computer.

So I may not be here as much as I have after the 7th of April.

We'll see.

lumberjim 04-05-2007 09:37 AM

on April 8th, I was going to challenge you to an online duel of wits, too. damn the luck!

Shawnee123 04-05-2007 09:41 AM

Noooooooooooooooooo...I can't take anymore "leaving" in my life. What? You didn't know it's all about me?

Tough decision to make, foot. I wish the best for you no matter what you decide.

glatt 04-05-2007 09:45 AM

I understand your dilemma, but come on, man. Be reasonable. It's the internet!

limey 04-05-2007 09:47 AM

I'm with glatt on this one!
How about a self-imposed deal with yourself - timed allocations of browsing after the work is done?

Griff 04-05-2007 09:48 AM

Do what's right for you, but check in now and then if you cut the cord.

Undertoad 04-05-2007 09:59 AM

Spending too much time on the net? Get a faster connection silly!

You're in luck. I had the cut off date wrong. It's the 20th. so sharpen your wits.

And thanks everyone, I'll consider more closely the possibility of self deals and restraint. I've always been more of a "the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom" sort of guy. The idea may be insane, maybe I just need a new isp. DSL is as fast as it gets around here...
And there is always the liberry...

I was actually going to suggest that you switch to dialup--it would be cheaper, and maybe the slow speed would be just frustrating enough to make you only get online when it was really worth it, instead of browsing when you had better things to do. But don't leave us forever, dammit!!

zippyt 04-05-2007 11:02 AM

don't run off all mad and the such foot !!!

Ah, foot. I hear thee.

Beestie 04-05-2007 08:00 PM

I'm sorry F³ I'm afraid I can't let you do that.

xoxoxoBruce 04-05-2007 08:04 PM

Go ahead and bail if you think it will help.

But it won't, 'cause I know where you live.
Don't make me come up there, young man.

footfootfoot 04-05-2007 08:33 PM

I'll hide the booze...

kerosene 04-05-2007 08:39 PM

Seriously, 3foot, I hope you don't go for long...I have really enjoyed your posts.

I'll hide the booze...

Bruce and I will bring our own !!!

footfootfoot 04-05-2007 09:24 PM

Jeez you guys. The library's only a couple of blocks away... I'll see if I can go without for a while, see if productivity increases and if morale doesn't drop.

In the meantime, we've got until the 20th to post like mad. As said in the holy grail:
"I'm not dead yet."

Plus I owe you all a review of the Belgian beer tasting...

NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have I made myself clear, young man?

You never know when I might be feeling all photogenic again, and do you really want to risk missing that? :D

Seriously, I would miss your posts so try to make it in once in awhile. :sniff:

Dear footfootfoot:

You are a dear friend, and although the cellar, the internets and I would all be poorer for it, if your departure meant you could spend more time with your family and growing with them, then I welcome the loss, for their gain and yours. But I want a receipt for that, mister :eyebrow:.

Seriously, your family and your work are a thousand times more important than <strike>me</strike> <strike>us</strike> the internets. While I have you on the line, make a note of this please.

Ditto that. I still dance around with my own kids on the weekend to the cmep you posted a while back. They love the Pee Po Belly Bum Drawers and Lime in the Coconut bits.

BrianR 04-06-2007 11:43 PM

Phooey! No truck routes!

Aliantha 04-07-2007 02:28 AM

Everyone needs a little 'me' time. Try and hang out with us here a bit when you get the time footsicle. It'd be a loss not to see your input here. I really admire your dedication to your family though. I hope that whatever you decide to do, it ends up being the best thing you could have done. :)

Elspode 04-07-2007 09:16 AM

Footie, I've been much less online lately, yet I retain my connection as I'd go gaga without it. I agree with the self-imposed restriction concept, or (and here's a ridiculous concept), just go ahead and do the things you've been not doing, enjoy them, and go online when it is reasonable and feasible.

For me, part of the restriction has been my work lack of access, but the other is that I'm real busy with my home and yard, and, by extension, my family. It all seems to be working out for the best, even though I get a bit weird sometimes while I'm going through withdrawal.

Use some self-discipline, not self-isolation. Maybe it is a better course. If not...cya! :D

Iggy 04-09-2007 11:59 AM

See, I left back in January when I lost connection at work. Every once in a great while (i.e. once a month) I check here for a bit to see if there is anything I missed. I don't think anyone even realized I was gone... but I was mostly a lurker. And now I find out that Elspode isn't on as much either, and foot might be leaving on a semi-perminent basis! What is happening here?!?!?

kerosene 04-09-2007 08:29 PM

I missed you, Iggy!

Iggy 04-09-2007 09:12 PM

Hee hee

Now I am all nostalgic... I must come back! I miss the cellar. It really upsets me that it is blocked at work now... grrrrrr
Foot, I am sorry to hijack your thread... I hope you do not leave. Or at least are able to visit frequently. Even though I am not on much, I would miss you when I came to check in!!!
Thanks everyone, for making a lonely lizard feel loved. ;)

I work for minions of Satan who have chosen to begin my orientation to Hell a bit early by restricting my online access at work. I'm making up for it by taking extra antidepressants and drinking heavily.

We've missed you, Iggy.

I can't imagine a situation where that wouldn't help.

Sounds about like what happened to me. Only it isn't that my online access has been restricted, it is that every good site (i.e. everything but news sites) has been blocked so I can't view it at all.
I've missed you too!!! :D

Auldjaded 04-17-2007 05:03 PM

I don't know ya, Foot, but I'll say this: for my part, when the internet connection goes down for just a minute or two, I start to tremble and sweat, and fumble around with the cable connection, and restart my computer, and everything. Oh...and swear. You are a better person than I if you can give it up..."Hello, I'm auldjaded, and I'm an Internetoholic..."

footfootfoot 04-19-2007 08:30 PM

OK kids tonight's the night. Here's a quick rundown of the plan for the next several months. First, I have one more side of the house to tear down and rebuild (the one with the porch) I also have to complete the garage addition and a new bedroom over the kitchen. All this before June 10th, if you believe the Sonogram guy or June 27th if you believe the midwife.

Yes, the inchling is going to be a big brother. Since we think we're having a girl, if you believe the sonogram guy, perhaps we shall call her the millimeter.

This time I am hiring some other carpenters to help and that is expensive when you have four guys making $35/hr each. A fifteen minute coffee break is 35 bucks, at the end of the day you've spent $1120 dollars.

So, I need to get all my ducks in a row and not spend so much friggin time tapping my internet vein.

Also, I was talking to a friend the other day, someone from my photography days (which I am thinking of returning to) and he had to go take a few portraits of some CEOs for blah blah corp (very big, you use their products 24/7) the whole thing was a huge cluster fuck and a time waster. I wondered if the CEO cared about the wasted time and what it cost him and my friend pointed out "The guy makes more money each day before lunch than I make in two years."

So it occurred to me that I would like to earn more money and since I am not getting paid or even doing anything remotely related to earning money on teh internet, then I will take a hiatus and see what I can do with the extra time. (about three hours a day)

I'll check in periodically, I'm keeping my gmail account, and I expect some of you to upload some hrhrmbmmbb to cmep...

Or I'll come crawling back in a week or so. To paraphrase Douglas Adams:

So long, and thanks for all the links!

zippyt 04-19-2007 09:14 PM

Youl be back !! this placeis like Herion !!!

monster 04-19-2007 09:16 PM

you are stronger than I, F3. May you have fun and good luck and a thunderstorm like all buggery that means you don't have to pay your laborers and gives you time to visit us here.......

Clodfobble 04-19-2007 10:50 PM

Hey, congrats on the pending millimeter!!! That's great news.

wolf 04-20-2007 02:01 AM

Congrats on the millimeter, dude!!

You will have to come back and post pictures. In fact, where's that sonogram ...

ashke 04-20-2007 05:19 AM

Congrats on little millimeter =)

Griff 04-20-2007 08:41 AM

Nice work on the millimeter!

LabRat 04-20-2007 09:07 AM

I'm a little hurt we didn't hear about the lil mil before this, but the congratulations are just as hearfelt! Awesome!

Dude, I didn't know 3hrs was what you were killing out here (I know not all at the cellar), that IS a serious chunk of time.

GOOD LUCK
with the rest of your home improvements, and I do look forward to occasionally hearing from you.

BigV 04-20-2007 11:03 AM
