March 17, 2007: $206 million in cash
http://cellar.org/2007/206million2.jpg
Fark today points out this story of a Mexican drug raid, centered around trackers in pseudoephedrin -- you knew it as Sudafed, and it's used in making methamphetamine. Before Sudafed (and other such medicatinons) changed the formula (to something less effective), meth lab people were buying and stealing it in large quantities. When the US cracked down on it, Mexico became the largest producer of it - and thus, the Mexican traffickers of it got rich beyond belief. Thus, most of the bills there are 100s. From a decongestant that was sold over-the-counter a year ago. More pics are at the slideshow linked from the story. |
I read the story/saw the slide show. Two things impressed me: how big a "block" the money stacked up to be, and how they were able to hide the $206 million.

Dumb ass dealers for haveing ALL that cash on hand !!!
Don't they know that that is what Caribean banks are for ????? |

Does Canada make this "pseudo" as well? Venezuela? :) |
How do you know they don't have another few hundred million socked away in the bank somewhere? This might just be the petty cash fund.
If I were there, I'd be tempted to find out what it would feel like to lie down on top of that stack. |

Still, I guess I wouldn't throw away a large pile of worn $100 bills.;) |
Wow.
Never seen a picture of $205,999,990 USD before. I recognize that ten bucks equivalent in pesos, though.
|
wow, that's more than I make in a month!
|
Clever way of showing the green on Saint Patrick's Day.

Update, the original image was just replaced with a higher-res, larger version.

Welcome to the Cellar, OB. :D
Now put down the $10 and back away. |

I'd like to roll around and toss the money in the air... like some cheezy movie scene. Maybe even "neked"... |
Three statements from the Link;

Apparently they are importing pseudoephedrine, but are they the worlds largest producer of cold medicines or methamphetamines? Can't see any reason for the former so I guess the latter. So how are they sneaking it into the United States? Oh, wait, we're talking about Mexico....nevermind.:smack: |
Wow, that's very awesome. I hope this isn't one of those situations where they have to burn it all.
|
I would like to take a nap atop all that money.
|
I would like to have all that money....
|
I would like 1% of that money.
|
Money won't make me happier. But the things I would by with it would. :D

You were friends with my mother?

Now that's walking-around money.
It looks like Bill Gates cleaned out his couch. But the real thing I'm wondering is, what would the money-handling procedures of these crims be like? Would their procedures have been tight enough to detect if someone had walked off with $10,000? I guess not, that would require the keeping of records that could later be found by the police. |
If you make sure the right amount comes in on every transaction, and keep it away from people, you should be OK. This money wasn't in the open but carefully packed away. The police unwrapped, counted and stacked it, and I'll bet nobody was ever alone with it. ;)
|
Just one stack...just one little rubber-banded stack of that, wow!

Nah...We'll just hand it over to the next in line no-name-3rd-world-country-to-fund-their-Jihad. Then we will have a reason for another war. It should go toward protecting and training our local law-enforcement agencies that guard our bordering towns and cities. .....anyway, I am just rambling. |
Uh, Woody, er...it's Mexico.;)
|
Like to have seen that house burning just before the cops found it... I bet there'd be some real interesting antics going on...
