The Big One
It's been wicked cold here for quite a spell but the snow has been limited until...
Snow Is Expected To Begin Late This Afternoon... And Become Heavy At Times Late Tonight And During The Day Wednesday. The Snow Will Taper Off To Snow Showers Early Evening Wednesday. By The Time The Snow Ends Wednesday Night... 16 To 24 Inches Of Snow Accumulation Is Possible. |
I think we are going to get lucky down here in VA and the southern edge of the storm is going to pass just above here.
Don't forget to load up on Ramen and toilet paper. And beer. Lots of beer. |

Ours has been "re-sized" several times and currently they're back to 8" with lots of blowing.
I feel lucky ;) |

Nice timing on the before pic Spex. I should have done that before leaving the house.

oh, i'm sorry. i thought this thread was about my cock. carry on

Over here, it's pathetic. About a week ago we got a whole centimeter of snow, only to be washed away by the rain that followed that night. *snorts*
If any of you happen to have any excessive snow.. ship some my way, will you? |

If I had 8" with lots of blowing, I'd feel pretty damn lucky, too. |
I awaked to our typical lack of the storm of the century which had been predicted for this area. My back porch had less snow on it than Spexxvet's as of noon today.
Had to go out to the grocery store, of course I went once it had "really started" snowing, meaning that there were more than flurries. No crowd at the market, which was nice, made the ultimate in grocery store faux pas (had more that 15 items, didn't realize I'd loaded my stuff up on an express lane), and returned home without incident. County Emergency Dispatch sent a message to my pager saying that we'd receive 2-4 inches of snow, and that the changeover to sleet and freezing rain would occur around 2100 to 2300 hrs tonight, with heavy accumulation expected. County Dispatch is way better than Accuweather. I am very glad that I am not at work right now. I have plenty of beer. |
It is accumulating nicely here.. all classes after 1 were canceled.
Major sledding tonight! http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f8...n/P1030635.jpg |
nice!
We'll not getting anything until after dark. update: it is dark and kids called snow |
Pretty disappointing so far... snapped this one on my way home from Target, which was deserted.

haha oh man just had the highlight of the night! I tied a plastic toboggan sled to the back of my car and did power slides all around the campus roads with my buddy riding in the sled.
Got chased down by security in their pickup truck though, but man it was fun while it lasted. |
The weather in the States even made our news last night. I sat there smugly and though, "Yes, I already know that thank you!"
As many pictures as possible please, it's great to see what real snow looks like, rather than the icing sugar dusting I got. |
I'd kill for snow right now!!!
Jinx - in that *L. Conestoga* pic, are those houses the same???? |
What we have out there now is not pretty: an inch of snow, followed by an inch of sleet and freezing rain, which will now be followed by gale force winds. This is like a worst case scenario for people who drive, because they won't be able to keep the roads clear of ice all day.

Hi-jack Bruce. Ever see 2 hoods made into a boat?

I've seen pictures of that, but up on the mountain boats weren't a priority, Buster.
Today, a little snow, just about as deep as the tire sidewall, then sleet/ice in all it's sparkly wonder. Stayin' home today. |
The office is CLOSED!!! WOOOOOO-HOOOOO!
|
we got 'bout 8 inches, then freezing rain, and then winds. Snow Day #2 for me--all the Uni's are closed. Naturally, I'm not taking advantage of this by studying, reading and beginning my paper. I'd rather panic next week.
|
Is this a part of the Global warming??
Overhere it's drizzle, 10 degrees Celsius. |

(I'm off from work too. Though I think I'm got a cold or something. I posibly wouldn't have gone in anyway.) |
We got 1-2 inches last night. My neighborhood streets were a bit slippery, but once I got out, it was smooth.

I'm playing around on the computer, doing casual housework, looking in my cupboards for things to eat and assigning chores to my son. I should be reading about "nulls" and "fails to reject the null" and how is Poe's Dupin like a monster? and sign language. |
I'm going to run around campus today and take some shots of the snow/ice/sleet.
I'll get back to ya'll later. |

Here's our street.
Sundae Girl, the main difference I notice with snow here (apart from the obvious more/more often) is that it's so cold it just doesn't melt on the roads from the heat and dirt of the traffic, even on the motorways. It can be rush-hour and the stuff still sticks to the tarmac -cars going over it just churn it up rather than melt it. It has to be ploughed/plowed. Our street is the only entrance to a residential neignborhood with about 500 households = lots of cars. The snow started to fall 24 hours ago and it's still deep and white on the street -just a little churned. We're low down on the plowing priority list. Also worth noting that it's hard for us to take meaningful "before" pics, as there is snow on the ground all winter. It doesn't usually start to melt until March, so whilst this is the first almost-big snow of the season, the ground (apart from streets and sidewalks) was already covered with about 3" of the old stuff. |

In an effort to be nice to UT's bandwidth for once, I've just published some of today's photos to my photo site in my signature.. check em out! |
We probably got about 4 inches, but that was compressed by the sleet and freezing rain. My 9 year old didn't break through the top crust, in some places. Shovelling was a BITCH. Especially for an overweight, sedentary 47 year old man. :o
|
You people who get to take off work just because it snows really annoy me. Along with folks who get to take a lunch. And don't have to avoid spit and feces.
Hmmm. These should probably go in the "Shit that Annoys me" thread. That being said, I'm not at work tonight only because I am prepping to go to a conference tomorrow. I will be in Baltimore for the weekend, and without internet access, unless I can convince someone with a laptop to let me weasel some time from them in the wireless lounge. |
I get to swing an extra shift when the schools close for snow...

I'll bet there's lots of health care employees stuck at the various hospitals, catching snatches of sleep in crappy beds and gulping bits of bad food because 3/4 of the replacement staff can't get into work. Oh, sure, they'll send a 4x4 out for some employees, but the ones stuck there are STUCK there until a replacement gets in. If you work 12 hour shifts and are forced to stay...it's just ugly. |
I always wanted the National Guard to come and take me to work, but we haven't hit a situation where our ambulance couldn't get at least one vehicle on the road.

On the way to work this morning.
http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/6...11918aamu8.jpg[/IMG] The secondary roads still covered, ice on the trees and wires. http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/555...12156aaoi2.jpg[/IMG] |
Just got back to work after 2 days of closing. It's really quite rare; in our staff meeting Monday we were reminded that we "never close." HA HA.
Had plenty of food in the house, but needed cigarettes (I know, bad habit.) Walked the mile or so to the nearest gas station, waiting for a car to slide off the road and run into me. I could have driven, but I wanted the steps for our "10,000 steps a day program" we are running. Walking through the drifts, still snowing and blowing...it was great exercise. Well, lost the pedometer somewhere in the snow. Natch. I liked the walk though. Saw all the ducks on the river, and a Blue Heron. Found out we were closed yesterday, so promptly got to the store to stock up on beer. As much as I hate-love this job, I felt pretty spoiled the last two days knowing there are people who have to go to work no matter what the weather. Wolf, you have my greatest respect! I enjoyed the time. Shoveled my carport and sidewalks, talked to my many elderly neighbors. If I ever won a smallish lottery, I would just pay off the place I have, get a decent car, and spend my days writing and piddling around the house. AND get internet so I don't miss you all for two days! :) |
I did wonder if you were snowed in, but no point in asking as you only access at work!
|
Borrowed Dads loader this morning to punch our way out. I was only a couple minutes late for class...

I understand the concept behind "never close." As a higher education institution people should know that in some jobs they DO have to make it in no matter what. But my point has always been that we are a commuter college; we have young and old students from a tri-county area, many in very rural parts of the counties. There are actually students who wouldn't dream of missing a class, and many of them don't have nice 4 wheel drives with heated seats. I worry about those people tryng to make it in.
Plus, I wanted the day off with pay! :) Our maintenance guys spent 14 hours trying to clear the lots and drives...just couldn't keep up. That's the only reason we closed. |

The ice on my driveway is roughly 2" thick. This has been a nightmare for some, not for me so much because I do have the 4x4...
But yesterday Katkeeper called from Harrisburg and asked if I would come up there and chip off some of the 3" thick ice on her driveway so she could get out. I did, stopping at the nearby hardware store for some gear and salt. On the PA Turnpike there were tons and tons of trucks, especially FedEx; I must have passed about ten double trailers heading west and about twice that heading east... and hundreds of trucks. Turns out they were all avoiding the parallel highways 100 miles north, where I-80, I-78 and I-81 were hosed beyond comprehension. Smart truckers with smart route management were probably getting to NY and the northeast via the toll road, which had been well managed and was in good condition. Until one of those trucks got in a tangle with a minivan, and the result was a good 3 hours of backup eastbound. I was in the last hour of it... |
Some people were stuck in their cars on I78 for 24 hours.
