'Spode is toasty.:D

skysidhe 12-01-2006 10:49 PM

oh good- ee:D

Elspode 12-03-2006 10:42 PM

We got a real good day of melt yesterday, but it was back to colder today. It is now 13 degrees, and everything is frozen solid. Lots of patches of glare ice from the refrozen meltwater.

I'm still trying to buy a load of wood. I have a feeling it is going to be a lot more expensive than it was at this time last week. Sigh.

And people keep saying Ohio is in the midwest.. I haven't seen a darn flake of snow yet.
Skiing at Boston Mills/Brandywine is going to suck this year

Dusting of powder in NEPA last night, its just a matter of time.

Aliantha 12-04-2006 06:21 PM

We saw the storms on the telly here.

They never cease to amaze me. A big part of that is probably because I've never actually seen snow. Maybe I'd best do that some time. ;)

Glad all the cellar dwellars are doing ok. Hope it continues to be so.

zippyt 12-04-2006 06:45 PM

I've never actually seen snow

You are about the third preson I have EVER heard say that !!!

I am from the south , where a dusting sends EVERY body into a Frenzy of rushing to the store to buy milk ,eggs ,and bread !!
I have NEVER understood this , french toast isn't THAT popular !!!!!

Aliantha 12-04-2006 06:53 PM

Don't you all keep UHT milk in the cupboard for this very reason?

I know I do! ;)

DanaC 12-04-2006 06:55 PM

......what in case of snow? :P

Aliantha 12-04-2006 07:03 PM

Yep! ;)

You just never know when it might snow!!! (reference to gun dispute for those of you who are uninformed...hehehe)

zippyt 12-04-2006 07:09 PM

UHT milk

Is that that milk stuff so full of presertives that it CAN'T go bad ???

When I was over that way in the mid 80's , they got some for the ship , I got a carton and stuck it in a small broom closet with a leaking steam pipe for a month , we chilled it and it tasted FINE ( well as fine as that stuff can taste )

Griff 12-04-2006 07:11 PM

Yeah around here we put non-fat dry milk on the shelf for those emergencies.right behind the bullets;)

Aliantha 12-04-2006 07:12 PM

UHT is Ultra Heated (don't know what the T stands for and can't be bothered looking it up) Anyway, they heat it up and then seal it in airtight Tetra packs (maybe that's what the T stands for). It keeps for about 2 yrs or so.

We usually do have a couple of litres in the cupboard for emergencies - usually associated with late night milk deprivation, not snow.

I live in Texas, and even here it snows every once in a while (and a few times in my life, it has actually stuck.)

Aliantha 12-04-2006 08:03 PM

Well, I live in a sub-tropical climate, so that probably explains the lack of snow.

Also, because I prefer the warm weather, I usually avoide the southern states during winter. ;)

Maybe I'll buy a nice thick coat and go for a visit some day.

xoxoxoBruce 12-05-2006 03:43 AM

UHT stands for Ultra High Temperature or Ultra Heat Treatment, depending on who's packaging it. :smack:

Elspode 12-05-2006 07:04 AM

Shelf stable milk bothers me on some subconscious level.

glatt 12-05-2006 07:38 AM

When I lived in Germany for a year in the 80s we would buy that milk. Not much choice. There was the unpasteurized fresh milk that spoiled in two days and tasted funny or there was this stuff that lasted 2 years but tasted funny. I missed our US milk that would last for a week before spoiling.

It's never really caught on here in the US. It would be nice to have a liter or two kicking around for those milk emergencies, even if it does taste a little funny.

Sundae 12-05-2006 02:04 PM

What do Americans use for individual cups of tea & coffee then? Like in fast food restaurants and hotel bedrooms where frsh milk can't be kept? Is it powdered?

I can't bear UHT or powdered to be honest. I will drink black coffee rather than ruin my tea if I can't get fresh milk. I might change my mind if I was ever snowed in of course, but that's highly unlikely with our climate the way it is...

I suppose that is UHT "milk." We call it half and half, which is half cream and half whole milk, but it doesn't require refrigeration when it's sealed in those little plastic cups.

Hm. No snow here, a bit of frost in the mornings and now it's getting c-c-c-cold.

busterb 12-06-2006 04:53 PM

Pull your long drawers back up. It's on the way!
