Fall

To all you state-side.. where is your favorite place/activity in the Fall? I'm trying to accomplish two things here, find good places to shoot some fall shots, and find something fun to do on the weekends near Canton, OH.

SteveDallas 09-30-2006 03:16 PM

The Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.

xoxoxoBruce 10-02-2006 04:45 AM

The New England fabled fall color is going to suck this year, due to the weather this summer. :(

A half hour west of Charlotte is Crowder's Mountain state park. I wouldn't drive farther than that because it's more of a hill really. There are a couple of one or two mile paths up to the top which are labeled strenuous but aren't. This keeps the crowds away. Or you can rock climb. Puts you 800 feet above the surroundings and you can see Charlotte on a clear day. Nothing too special but it gives me a little exercise and a quick nature fix once a week. I'm itching to go deeper into the Smokies, having just read Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods but I think I'll wait until my daughter is older so I don't have to carry her.

When I lived in Cumberland, MD I used to love riding my bike on the old C & O Canal tow path. It goes all the way into D.C. and in the other direction it follows old railway beds all the way to Pittsburgh. It was nice easy riding since it was so flat and you were safe from cars.

Bullitt 10-30-2006 12:55 AM

There is no one correct dialect of English.. so sorry MATEY

Buddug 10-30-2006 01:31 AM

Actually , it may interest you to know that 'fall' is a very old English term ; the word 'autumn' came later .

It is like that with many Americanisms . The American form is often a fossil not used by the British . ' Gotten' is another ex

And these linguistic comings and goings are a constant enrichment on both sides of the Atlantic .

Beestie 10-30-2006 01:52 AM

This pic pretty much sums up my favorite fall pastime...

Buddug 10-30-2006 01:58 AM

What ?

Black men exerting themselves for your amusement ?

Beestie 10-30-2006 04:07 AM

OK the cookies are almost out of the oven, check that. They are. and I pwn baked goods. I am a motherfucking baking motherfucker. but lets talk about your awesome images, Zippyt.

Taking it form teh bottom up, The blurry water shot is pretty cool but the one above it has a lot more interest for me since it combines blurryness and sharpness in the frozen motion and the white foam. Likewise it also has texture in the sharp water which looks almost like ice, and teh white froth which is practically textureless on account of its blur. A splash of color would really send this image over the top.

I'm sure Bullit won't mind if we borrow his leaves a moment. In fact, it is just this contrast which makes his photo so appealing. Without the red leaves as counterpoint the photo would be less appealing. You must be a good Baptist boy, surely you know "call and response" It's the same in photos. In Bullit's photo the green leaves on the tree are the call and the red are the response.
CAN I GET A WITNESS?

AMEN!

Your photo has that to an extent, as I said. Color may or may not improve it. Just my opinion.

Moving on.

I tweaked the top photo a bit. My question is: What is the point of interest? I darkened the trees a bit and goosed the water. But is this about the water or the trees or both? And if so, what exactly do you want to show us? They both have their good points, but don't seem to be working as a team. I tried cropping them into two seperate pictures.

Inchling would love the train track picture. He's a budding railfan. I tweaked the sky a bit (really quick and dirty) and darkened the foliage. see what you think.

Those berries look like fox grapes or elderberries.

I like the zippy mobile, I've always wanted a truck with tool boxes on teh side. I'm so sick of moving tools from jobsite to jobsite...

The waterfall with the cress or moss or ferns is pretty cool. I just want to stick my head in.

Maybe this is more than you asked for, the photo teacher in me gets a little talkative with a couple of vodka and limes in him...

Classes can be good, but check out www.photo.net You can learn more than you'd ever want to know.

The most important thing is to keep on shooting and ask yourself "what am I after? What do I want?" and keep shooting. YOu are doing great.

I need a new truck, diesel can be converted to biodiesel easily I'm told. When oil gets too pricey, I'll fill up at the back of the diner.:earth:

And get rid of the damn dates. They ruin the best pictures. :yeldead:

DanaC 11-13-2006 07:16 AM

I love that you call it Fall. I also love that you retain 'autumnal' as a description even though you don't use 'autumn' for the season.

'Fall' is a brilliantly descriptive word.

Great work Slang. Isn't barkhamsted in CT?

I once dated a super psycho crazy inside the head chic who claimed to be from there. Also she claimed to be from Groton and or Mystic. At the time I was in NY. Years later I was living in Chester, CT and met people form that area and no one had heard of her or her family. (Despite her claims to their fame)

Gorgeous. You're in a good place for fall, Slang.

It seems, yes. I drive by this place long before the sun comes up every morning. I've heard that there is a reservior there but didnt get a good look at it during daylight since I'm working 12+ hours a day trying to UN-fuck another major American corporation's computer engineering woes.

Then one weekend MegaHugeFuct company laid me off just for the weekend so I ventured out into the light. Since I am not allowed to take photos from the grounds of MegaHugeFuct the photos from that day are from my commute route.

So...yes, I'm in a good place but only because I don't get out with the residents.
