This weekend? I just spent five days in Canterbury for 'Planning Summer School' with 220 Councillors from around the country.....lots of workshops, seminars and papers on the wonderful world of Planning, Regeneration and Development Managing :P

Sounds quite dull. Certainly sounded dull as ditch water when I was 'persuaded' to 'volunteer'.

Actually it was really interesting. Learned a lot about community cohesion and how local developers and local government can affect things at a societal level.

Also, I met up with a bunch of Aberdeenshire Councillors who were kind enough to adopt me as their token Labourite and mental enough to make the time fun.

Lots of interesting stuff to see in Canterbury, not least the Cathedral. We (ie. The Aberdeenshire contingent of which I was an honorary member :P) Made sure to fully investigate the 'Nighttime Economy' of Canterbury.

The only depressing thing about it, was that the students who had arrived on campus early, apparently lodged complaints with the Office over late night noise. (not necessarily us, there were apparently several late night parties held about the campus by various councillors) What a sorry state the world is in when students are the ones complaining about the noise :P

Clodfobble 09-06-2006 04:41 PM

This past weekend I had the misfortune to attempt to fly to Peoria for a family reunion centered around a grandmother's 100th birthday. For those of you keeping count, that's with three children, the youngest of whom is only three months old. Oh, and one flight was cancelled on the way there, resulting in an extra connection and 8 extra hours of traveling, and on the return trip the initial flight was delayed, resulting in a sprint across Chicago O'Hare, carrying the aforementioned baby, wearing flip-flops, to fortunately make last boarding call for the connecting flight.

But all my meals over the weekend came from such fine dining establishments as Waffle House and The Golden Corral, that made it all better. :greenface

xoxoxoBruce 09-06-2006 08:34 PM

Ow..... I didn't know you were into masochism, Clodfobble.:bonk:

Dude...she's *legal*...and probably eager and inexperienced. C'mon, be a man. Do your manly duty. Show her the ways of the world.

How many times do I have to tell you...*don't* let the baby wear flip flops! It can make you late at airports!

What, there were no dumpsters available? Waffle House, where the pecans in the pecan waffles have *legs*.

apparently taiwan's age of consent is 16 .. so yeah, she is legal. what i'm worried about is the trouble of getting tangled up with a youngster. either she could be cool about it, or spaz out when it becomes clear that i do not want to marry her. ah, what the hell - i've been "that guy" before, I can certainly do it again, right?

Elspode 09-07-2006 12:32 PM

You're in Taiwan? Dude, I thought you were in New York.

I wouldn't get involved with any Taiwanese chick that you might dump. They could find your body floating out to sea if her male family members got pissed.

60th Birthday Party

2 Attachment(s)
A week ago it was my Mum's 60th birthday, so we had a BBQ on Saturday (officially her Retirement) and a family lunch on Sunday – her actual birthday. I've held off posting on it until my brother forwarded me some photos.

Although it had all been arranged between my Mum and her work colleague Sue, we managed to include some surprises. Little things like fairy lights, banners, a noticeboard of photos through the years, helium ballons & party poppers on all the tables and a "photo" birthday cake (they scan a photo onto edible paper which becomes the cake topping).

Cake with a bikini clad Mum & Board with photos chosen by my Dad - lots of boobies :)

It was held in a barn with a small marquee attached, although in 23 mph winds, partygoers had to hold onto their buns…. My brother lost a hamburger bun while walking across the yard – it lifted clean up, split and bounced down towards the piggery. I'm sure it went to a better place.

We had a tour of them and got to stroke both wriggling piglets and huge monster pigs. I'm in the photo below thankfully obscured by my niece & nephew, but my totally unsuitable cork wedges are visible.

No jokes about me being the one with my nose in the trough please (that wasn't caught on camera).

My niece & nephew both read out a short poem (cue "Aaaaaaaah"s from those assembled). And I made an off-the-cuff speech & toasted her with champagne (another surprise that in all honesty Mum didn't even seem to register).

We presented her with an album I had made up from comments from friends who couldn't be there. I made it in true scrapbook style with quotes, photos, buttons, bows and construction paper. Very proud of it actually.

Had a lovely mail from her at the end of last week apologising for her lack of reaction and thanking me profusely, she had been overwhelmed. Not that I minded – well, not really – I just wanted her to be happy on the day.

Trilby 09-11-2006 01:22 PM

Those are great pics--thanks for sharing them! Really sweet surprise for your mom! Love the cake photo!

JayMcGee 09-11-2006 06:38 PM

Nice.

Celebrate your family.

Elspode 09-11-2006 08:09 PM

How cool. Congrats to your mum. She must have raised ya'll right.

Undertoad 09-11-2006 08:22 PM

See the look of joy and love in the second-to-last photo.

Thank you for sharing, SG!

xoxoxoBruce 09-11-2006 08:26 PM

Cool party, well done.
Made her stiff upper lip quiver a little, did ya? Good for you. :thumb2:

Pictures of visiting my mother in the nursing home wouldn't be that exciting.

That's why I treasure these moments while I can - I'm quite worried about how I'd deal with your situation.

wolf 09-12-2006 11:16 AM

Think about the British in the shelters and tube stations during the Blitz, solidarity and singing.

It's kind of like that, only your're a solo, or maybe a duet if you have siblings, and there's no chorus.

Elspode 09-14-2006 09:45 PM

OMG. Your niece is fucki...I mean, your niece is quite an attractive young lady. BTW...does anyone in your family have *any* problem with what I would consider the rather inconceivably provocative bodily posture being demonstrated here?
