Music Trivia Game

Okay, I got a new game. Not sure if it should be here or in Nothingland, but it's about music, so I put it here.

Here's how it works.

One person posts a music trivia question. If you know the answer, post it. First person to get it right gets to ask another question. DON'T post another question until you are confirmed correct.
EDIT: NO GOOGLE. Please. Honour system.
I'll start.

Where did the band Pink Floyd get its name?

glatt 06-14-2006 10:49 AM

The effeminate barber named Floyd in the Andy Griffith show.

wolf 06-14-2006 10:50 AM

It's one of the advanced moves in the kama sutra.

glatt 06-14-2006 11:06 AM

Also named after Floyd the barber. He got around.;)

Undertoad 06-14-2006 11:07 AM

Taken from the names of two old jazz musicians, one of whom was "floyd lastname" and the other of whom was "firstname pink".

Ibby 06-14-2006 11:11 AM

Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. UT's close enough, he gets it.

Undertoad 06-14-2006 11:32 AM

I'm a WINNAH!!!

Next question.

Not including bass, ten different guitarists have played with Fleetwood Mac. Name two of them.

You get to pose the Q!

Ibby 06-14-2006 01:54 PM

I know theres some 10cc fans around here...

What is that 'ahhhhhh'ing noise in I'm Not In Love?

xoxoxoBruce 06-14-2006 04:45 PM

Groupies. ;)

JayMcGee 06-14-2006 09:32 PM

groupies deserves to win....

but maybe a mellotron....

Elspode 06-14-2006 09:58 PM

Not a mellotron, but 128 individually recorded and layered tracks of the guys singing a single note, then playing them back using the mixing board sliders to control the attack and decay.

This is one of the more frequently told 10cc stories, because *everyone* thinks it is an incredibly cool thing. Apparently, they eschewed the 'Tron because it just didn't quite sound like they wanted it to.

REM used a much-simplified version of this technique on one of their songs, even going to the extent of running out and buying a Tascam multitrack cassette recorder and recording individual notes to play back when doing that song during a live concert.

Elspode 06-14-2006 10:00 PM

Oh, hey...I won that one. That means I get to ask the next trivia question, doesn't it?

What group was conceived and founded by B3 organ wizard/producer Al Kooper?

Trilby 06-15-2006 07:59 AM

Blood, Sweat and Tears?

Elspode 06-15-2006 01:10 PM

We have a winner!

wolf 06-15-2006 01:11 PM

You go girl!! I'm good on general trivia, but weak on obscure music trivia. I have one great obscure music trivia question, though.

Trilby 06-15-2006 02:13 PM

How can I resist that? I'd like to defer my winning to wolf! So, wolf--let rip with your question!

Trilby 06-16-2006 11:10 AM

Ok--wolf isn't going to do it.

Question:

Name ONE Bay City Roller.

Ibby 06-16-2006 11:24 AM

Eric... Faulker? Faulkner?

Shawnee123 06-16-2006 12:15 PM

Yes, Eric Faulkner, Les Mckeown, Woody Wood, Derek Longmuire.
At one time Alan Longmuire...and Ian Mitchell.
Tom somebody may have been the manager.

Hey, I saw them in concert in 6th grade, what can I say?:smack:

Ibby 06-16-2006 06:22 PM

I'll go then.

Where did Steely Dan get its name?

jinx 06-16-2006 07:40 PM

It was a steam powered dildo in a book I never read and forget the name of.

jinx 06-17-2006 01:19 PM

sorry, duh...

In the Grateful Dead song "Wharf Rat", what is the significance of the name Pearly Baker?

Wharf Rat lyrics
Old man down, way down down, down by the docks of the city.
Blind and dirty, asked me for a dime, a dime for a cup of coffee.
I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story.
My name is August West, and I love my Pearly Baker best, more than my wine.
More than my wine - more than my maker, though he's no friend of mine.

Everyone said, I'd come to no good, I knew I would Pearly, believe them.
Half of my life, I spent doin' time for some other fucker's crime,
The other half found me stumbling around and drunk on Burgundy wine.

But I'll get back on my feet someday,
The good Lord willin', if He says I may.
I know that the life I'm livin's no good,
I'll get a new start, live the life I should.
I'll get up and fly away, I'll get up and fly away, fly away.

Pearly's been true, true to me, true to my dyin' day he said,
I said to him, I said to him, "I'm sure she's been."
I said to him, "I'm sure she's been true to you."

I got up and wandered, wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just to hang around.
I've got a girl, named Bonnie Lee, I know that girl's been true to me.
I know she's been, I'm sure she's been true to me.

glatt 06-17-2006 03:07 PM

Just a wild guess, but it is a pearl handled gun?

Ibby 06-17-2006 04:27 PM

Hm... Purley Baker was one of the big prohibitionists, could that be a reference to him?

jinx 06-17-2006 04:44 PM

Yup, that's what I was going for. Rev Purley Baker of the anti-saloon league.

Ibby 06-17-2006 06:03 PM

Wow... I go again?

Name two bands Mick Ronson has played with OR produced for.

lumberjim 06-17-2006 08:24 PM

Molly Hatchet and The Wiggles

Did you know that Mr Rodgers was the original drummer for (The New Yardbirds) Led Zeppelin?

lumberjim 06-17-2006 08:26 PM

don't worry. that's a lie. dirty filthy lie that I never believed in the first place. Really. Stupid Uncle Mike, Jerk.

bluecuracao 06-17-2006 09:19 PM

dar512 06-19-2006 12:05 PM

There doesn't seem to be one on the table.

According to the RIAA, which single was the first to go platinum?

glatt 06-19-2006 12:30 PM

You mean the RIAA has a role besides suing grandmothers, orphans, and disabled vets for piracy?

Ibby 06-19-2006 09:26 PM

Uh, there is one that hasnt been answered:
Quote:

Elspode 06-19-2006 10:49 PM

Mott the Hoople and David Bowie.

wolf 06-20-2006 01:39 PM

I was on a brief hiatus (bad week at work with several schedule switches) ... here's the missing question:

Listen to this clip.

What is the instrument?

(I'll supply the name of the Artist if folks are too confused.)

Fixed link. Guess away.

Trilby 06-20-2006 02:15 PM

I can't get link to work...:(

JayMcGee 06-20-2006 06:34 PM

john cage - 4 mins 32 seconds?

JayMcGee 06-20-2006 06:34 PM

or even the sound of one hand clapping?

wolf 06-20-2006 07:50 PM

pfui. Worked fine at home. I'll have to find another version of the clip. (found. post above fixed and tested)

bluecuracao 06-21-2006 03:53 AM

Eek, that's creepy. Is it Marilyn Manson, or Primus? (I have no idea what the instrument is.)

glatt 06-21-2006 08:11 AM

wolf, it reminds me of Laura Anderson, but I don't know the instrument.

Trilby 06-21-2006 08:17 AM

Oboe?

wolf 06-21-2006 09:59 AM

It is Laurie Anderson, and of course, it's a trick question. I usually offer money to people if they can guess what she's playing. I have never had to give up the money.

Her head. She has a microphone inside her mouth. Or is it the violin with a recorder head and the bow that has magnetic tape instead of horsehair?

I love Laurie Anderson but I haven't heard her in years. Thanks for making me 21 again for a bit!

wolf 06-21-2006 12:50 PM

Close but no guitar. She has done both, but neither is the case for Closed Circuit Baby.

Elspode 06-21-2006 02:31 PM

Rubber band stretched between the fingers and plucked? At least, that's what it sounds like when I do that. Always been fascinated with the idea of using that as a bass instrument.

capnhowdy 06-21-2006 03:33 PM

can't think of the name and the rules are no googling, but it sounds like one of those things that makes sound out of electrical current manipulated be the distance of ones hands from the instrument. I know. This is a shitty answer/guess.

barefoot serpent 06-21-2006 03:37 PM

^theremin

edit: not theramin

Elspode 06-21-2006 04:07 PM

Did I hear the right song? I heard nothing but low freq stuff. Although a theremin can do low freq stuff, it really didn't sound like one to me at all.

Definitely Laurie Anderson, though.

Undertoad 06-21-2006 04:40 PM

It sounds like her and some rubberbandy-like thing, but all either A) run through an effects unit which adds a metallic echo, or B) performed into a metallic pipe-like thing and micd at the other end of that thing.

wolf 06-21-2006 05:30 PM

Not a rubber band or a theremin ... UT's guess B is closest, but still not quite it.

Do you want to keep trying or be let off the hook?

JayMcGee 06-21-2006 06:00 PM

didgeradoo?

Spexxvet 06-21-2006 06:03 PM

I saw her play "herself" - she hit different parts of her body/clothing, producing different sounds. Is that it?

wolf 06-21-2006 06:18 PM

I've seen her do that as well, but it's not this particular cut.

Spexxvet 06-21-2006 07:19 PM

Skin flute? Male organ?

wolf 06-21-2006 07:47 PM

Nope.

I'll post the answer if nobody gets it by the time I get home from work.
