Moderator nomination thread

There should be at least two moderators so that the whole concept is spread over many people and not just one.

It doesn't take much work at all. One would be added to the list of email addresses that get notified when someone reports a post. One would remove spam and forum abuse and things like this.

Moderators can do the following:
- Edit, move, delete posts
- Edit, move, copy, open/close threads
- Post announcements (make posts "sticky" at the top of the forum)
- Ban users

They cannot:
- See real IP addresses
- See hidden user profile information

Being a moderator is more responsibility than work. In recent times we have been receiving about one spam per day and those users have to be banned and their threads removed or at least the posts removed. Sometimes users ask for specific help in editing stuff and one can certainly remove duplicate posts and merge threads that should be merged and such.

Cellar moderation is purposefully light, so there isn't a tremendous amount of actual work to do on that front, unless you have a vision of a different Cellar than the one we've arrived at so far.

So I figure there should be two, and that we should nominate and vote on them. So the floor is open to nominations and another thread will be opened for voting. We should elect our moderators, it is the only fair way to do it.

Previously nominated in PMs and the "changes" thread have been: xoxoxoBruce, wolf, SteveDallas, Lumberjim and Nothing But Net. Did I miss anyone? NBN was more interested in just the one section so I leave it to him whether he prefers to be nominated for the whole thing. If any nominees have second thoughts now is the time.

BTW I appreciate all your private messages on the subject, everything you all have said makes a lot of sense.

Happy Monkey 05-15-2006 01:36 PM

Would it be possible for the reported posts to go to PM instead of email, if someone is not likely to be using the same email address at different times of the day?

Undertoad 05-15-2006 01:56 PM

This does not appear to be an option.

glatt 05-15-2006 03:29 PM

xoxoxoBruce, wolf, SteveDallas, Lumberjim and Nothing But Net are a good group to choose from. I would be happy with any of them as mods.

I have no idea if they are interested, but I would also nominate Happy Monkey and BigV. They both are level headed and are around a lot.

rkzenrage 05-15-2006 03:30 PM

I nominate... no... or... no... and... um... no... damn!
You have a hard job.

skysidhe 05-15-2006 03:45 PM

I am for anyone who can be diplomatic and fair.

Well, that lets me out. :-) I'd certainly support wolf or bruce though, even though wolf does plain-spoken crone like I do and bruce and I disagree about some political stuff. Assuming either would want the job...

I moderate some other places and it's a *hard* job...wolf has seen me do it on the RKBA-PA Yahoogroup.

The others Glatt mentions I don't think I've seen enough of to have a good opinion. I'd hope UT would maintain enough control to remove a moderator who didn't continue the usual Cellar mostly lazzez-faire philosophy.

I think there should be a term limit, but otherwise I really don't think I should override the authority of the voters. You choose them, they are your moderators, not mine.

Unless the system was being broken or being used to break the law.

Undertoad 05-15-2006 05:01 PM

Ooh, I said term limit but I really meant term of office. If someone is doing a job that the voters like, they should be able to be re-elected.

zippyt 05-15-2006 05:09 PM

I vote for Wolf , Bruce , Steve D , Rich L , and Splode in that order .
HM and or Big V as well .
All these folks seem level headed and reasonable .

Beestie 05-15-2006 05:15 PM

I think everyone thus far nominated would make a fine moderator and don't have anyone to add. I would just suggest that there should be a period between nominations and voting to give those nominated a chance to carefully consider whether or not they wish to accept the responsibility.

Nominees should not feel pressured into accepting the nomination and should be granted the opportunity to decline the nomination without anyone reading anything into it.

well, I think you wear the crone well maggie :) I haven't found you to be 'downright mean' I think cartoons are funny. * shrug* I would nominate you, Bruce,HappyMonkey any one that can put a fun spin on something is cool by me.

Re: lazzez-faire, anyone that is overly controlling, obnoxious, rude, abusive and showing more than hints of narcism is what I meant when I said diplomatic and fair. I think you can be fair if you want to be maggie :)

There's lots of space between "downright mean" and "diplomatic". :-)

Clodfobble 05-15-2006 06:02 PM

I agree, Elspode and richlevy should be in the running as well, if they're willing. Personally, I'd go for more than two, since it seems the bulk of the job would be deleting spam and those crop up at all hours, but I realize that having too many might be a bigger pain for you, UT.

lumberjim 05-15-2006 07:09 PM

bruce is a shoe in for the first term at least. we want a good example set, after all.....

as for the second? yeh, wolf, i tink.

Nothing But Net 05-15-2006 07:21 PM

I'm really only interested in the Images section. I haven't posted much lately, but I do lurk continuously beneath the surface. UT I assume will still be picking and posting the IotDs.

I'd second, er...third that. My problem is I'm not on during the day. Much of the spam & crap happens overnight or in the morning and I don't get here until late afternoon or early evening.

Happy Monkey 05-15-2006 09:56 PM

I'd be willing, but I do have the aforementioned email issue. If the list of flagged emails shows up somewhere other than email I could do it, even if the notification is email-only.

Satire and picking bones done with class and smarts would have to be willful.

There's a skill. A finesse with words.

Not a fishwife. There is a difference between willfully aware prods and knee jerk reactions.

ok ok,,,maybe not diplomatic but if Bush can be president we can say Maggie is diplomatic. Or can be.

Ibby 05-15-2006 11:58 PM

I nominate Mari.

Okay, no I dont, not because shes not worthy but because that would piss too many people off.

Uhhhh... I second those already mentioned.

marichiko 05-16-2006 12:03 AM

Like my opinion really matters around here, but I think Kitsune's name should be thrown into the hat if he's willing.

Ibby 05-16-2006 12:37 AM

OOH! OOH! We should do a Field of 64 on this!

...Except we'd never get 64 real nominations.

Hmph. I still say It'd be fun.

WabUfvot5 05-16-2006 12:43 AM

Bruce is good by me.

Ibby 05-16-2006 12:57 AM

*chants* bruce! bruce! bruce!

Actually, I really have no preference. Bruce would be good, but so would the others mentioned.

Kagen4o4 05-16-2006 01:23 AM

i nominate kagen. he's really sexy and speaks very good.

That's why you have to do it by hemispheres. We manage just fine at the site where I am administrator: Greece comes online and I can go to bed because it is the middle of the day over there. It goes Greece, Argentina, Mexico, California, and back to Greece again. I really need somebody who is located in Asia, but there is nobody fluent in English and Spanish who qualifies so that means some of us have to check in throughout the day just to make sure nothing slipped through. The Cellar could easily use the same principle, with a PA or NY person handing off to WA or CA, then passing it to Australia who then waits for a Brit to get online. The time zones in Asia will be an empty spot here too, although you might want to ask Ashke to hang out at a certain time and email the next person in line if something happens which needs attention.

Well, I am on for two and a half solid hours (give or take a few minutes) every day between about 12.30 and 3 here, which is midnight-thirty through three AM on the east coast, so I can be a moderator's helper-monkey and keep an eye out then if someone likes...

Undertoad 05-16-2006 11:36 AM

Nominations so far, then:

xoxoxoBruce
Wolf
SteveDallas
Lumberjim
Nothing But Net
Happy Monkey
BigV
Elspode
RichLevy
Kitsune

It wasn't clear whether skysidhe's mention of maggie was a real nomination or just a personal endorsement. Please clarify, skysidhe.

Otherwise, nominations remain open and nominees can say whether or not they accept the nomination, and let's say we vote on like Thursday.

What do you think of a one year term through 6/1/2007?

marichiko 05-16-2006 11:52 AM

I like Tonchi's idea of "rolling" mods. For example, Kitsune or Bruce could cover the Eastern time zone, Big V or Tonchi herself, if she has the time, could cover the Pacific zone. We need an Aussie for that part of the world and I seriously nominate Kagen for that. Cyclefrance could do Europe and then hand it over to Bruce again. Just a thought. A one year commitment sounds reasonable to me.

BigV 05-16-2006 01:06 PM

I like the nominations already put forward: xoB, wolf, HM, lj, SD, Els, rl. I also think tw (despite his current tagline) and dar would be good moderators. I am basing these nominations on what I know of the temperment displayed by these users, and on the little I know about the duties and responsibilites of the postition. I think it should be taken seriously.

I accept my nomination. (thx glatt and zippyt!)

I have some questions about the responsibilites of the role itself. In the envitable case of a spam thread being created, and perhaps warned about with the notice going to email, what is the acceptable window for response time for deletion of such a thread? Golly, if I found one, and I have, I wouldn't mind if it were there as long as a day before deletion. I know I don't want to give aid, comfort and bandwidth to such parasites for one moment longer than I must, but if it happens and I don't get to it until I login/check that email address/see the smoke signals/etc, for a little while, is that a dereliction of my duty?

I also am a fan of terms of office. I am apprehensive (normally so, not abnormally so) that I will be able to do the job (if elected). and I would want to know that there was an "out" if I wasnt' fit. Short of banning me, of course. What are we talking here? Some number of months?

Multiple mods. Are we talking working in shifts? Or is it more like a distribution list and the first one to get to a ticket/email is the one to handle it?

Limited mods. I respect NBN's point that he would prefer to mod only a subset of threads. I think this is a good idea. I also think NBN would be a good moderator for the scope he defined.

Well, I can see by the big clock on the wall that I have to get back to class. I'll be back later.

thrillhouse 05-16-2006 02:29 PM

SteveDallas
or

Happy Monkey

Tonchi 05-16-2006 02:36 PM

Mari, we have lots of guys on the West Coast and nobody wants me to be a mod here, even if I did have the time  But as for what BigV is asking, the only real critical issues would be blocking spammers and flamers immediately and getting the trash off the board. What I have been doing at my other website is we created an ADMIN FORUM, and the messages are moved there to get them off the board and to allow us as a group to analyze what happened afterwards. Nobody can see this forum except me and the mods. This preserves the IP for me to trace and check against previously banned or troublesome persons to make sure they are not back under a different identity. It also allows us to decide how we will handle certain issues in the future, and if one of the mods disagrees with removing the message he can explain his reasons. We have found this to be very satisfactory, and it protects us too because people who do not like our forum rules are always writing letters to the webmaster and Thalia or her record label to demand our removal or death and that way we can demonstrate the chain of events to the final authority (although not once has this been necessary).

barefoot serpent 05-16-2006 03:36 PM

I'll nominate the magster (magstress? MaggieL).

edit: but what about this idea: Urbane Guerilla AND tw!!! wouldn't that be a hoot! Each one gets emailed every day HALF of the new password -- that way they'll have to work together to decide who to show the door...

skysidhe 05-16-2006 03:49 PM

I nominate Kagen.

barefoot already got the magster

lumberjim 05-16-2006 04:09 PM

i think jinx would be good at it. she's on a lot more than i, and has experience. plus, she's smarter than i am.

lookout123 05-16-2006 04:13 PM

i'm going with bruce and wolf.

SteveDallas 05-16-2006 04:36 PM

If nominated, I will not run to the liquor store for some Scotch. If elected, I will not serve quiche. Sure, I accept.

Ok, really.

Obvious spam. Delete.
Banning users. Only after consultation for any kind of established user. A unilateral ban should only be for extreme cases such as hit-and-run spam.

Thats about it.

calling wolf a sub Goddess and placing her in a subordinate position (especially to the one you've got above her) is a crime.
