Cellar Field of 64, #5: recent films

Nominate your favorite films since 2000. The nominations are part of the seeding, so don't just list at random - only mention your favorites. If others have already mentioned films you like, you can second them. Seconding goes into the seeding too.

For eligibility of films we'll rely on imdb.com's release year.

To get a good list of films to choose from, you can use IMDB's advanced search feature.

http://www.imdb.com/list

In section 2 of that page, you can enter a year or range of years. In section 3, exclude TV and video stuff using the drop-down boxes. Set a minimum of 3000 voters to limit your results to most popular films. In section 4, hide AKA titles.

I hereby rescind my wet blanket statement in the other thread. There are plenty of good movies since 2000. Good idea, Cyclefrance.

JayMcGee 04-27-2006 06:26 PM

seconds Chicago and Moulin Rouge and LOTR as trilogy

nominates Saving Grace

Happy Monkey 04-27-2006 06:38 PM

Might as well put all the LOTRs into one slot. Tolkien considered it a single book, after all.

Rock Steady 04-27-2006 10:40 PM

Actually, I'm looking forward to the contest helping me to decide what movies to watch to catch up to the 21st century. Go Cellar-64-Movies!!!! Ra !!!!!!!!!!!

smoothmoniker 04-28-2006 12:07 AM

There is a UK movie that didn't get much press here in the US called "Millions". It's maybe the most perfect family movie ever made - innocent enough for children, but complex and wonderfully made. See it.

The rest of the list:

Crash (2004)
Hotel Rhwanda (2004)
Cinderella Man (2005)
Finding Neverland (2004)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Secondhand Lions (2003)
The Incredibles (2003)

Cyclefrance 04-28-2006 04:00 AM

Have to add:

Keeping Mum

Nice Patrick Swayze, Rowan Atkinson and Maggie Smith black comedy in the true 'Ealing' style - it won't win, but is one to get out on DVD if you fancy something light and chuckly to watch....(suppose it should go in the DVD thread but probably everyone interested is looking here anyway at the moment, and, hey, it's lazy Friday...)

Ibby 04-28-2006 04:05 AM

Serenety is thirded. I don't much watch movies anymore, I have about the same contempt for modern movies as I do for modern music. But Firefly/Serenety are really good, getting the right balance between sci-fi and old-fashioned, funny and serious, inane and intellectual.

I agree. Very cute and well done. :thumb2:

glatt 04-28-2006 10:59 AM

Millions is a good movie, but my kids would be scared to see it. There are a few frightening scenes. (For little kids.)

Undertoad 04-28-2006 11:41 AM

Points of procedure:

- By general consensus we treat the LOTR films as one. Anyone disagrees speak now or forever hold your peace.

- There was no consensus on the Harry Potter movies, the floor is open to debate this question.

- After figuring out the Potter matter, there will be a massive renomination round of all films nominated once.

glatt 04-28-2006 11:44 AM

Might as well lump Harry Potter together too.

smoothmoniker 04-28-2006 12:16 PM

LOTR is one story set over three films

Potter is a series of stories set in the same place with the same people.

Treat LOTR as one, treat Potter individually.

Elspode 04-28-2006 02:26 PM

I concur with SM.

wolf 04-28-2006 04:31 PM

Pitch Black
Chronicles of Riddick
Sin City
Team America: World Police
Gladiator
The Passion of the Christ
The Matrix (series)
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

chainsaw 04-28-2006 04:50 PM

Sorry to keep being the movie Nazi, but The Matrix (1) was released in 1999.

wolf 04-28-2006 05:13 PM

Like LOTR, it's one movie released in three segments, IMHO.

Cyclefrance 04-28-2006 06:00 PM

Go along with Smoothmoniker - LOTR = 1, HP = several

lookout123 04-28-2006 06:08 PM

Black Hawk Down
Shawn of the Dead
The Ring
Legend of Bagger Vance

glatt 04-28-2006 08:44 PM

oh yeah,
High Fidelity

Undertoad 04-29-2006 12:12 AM

Well now we're gonna need a consensus on the Matricies

Beestie 04-29-2006 12:16 AM

Potter is like the Bond films. They are distinct.

The Matrix series is one.

DucksNuts 04-29-2006 12:57 AM

I'd go with The Matrix as one

billybob 04-29-2006 01:35 AM

Blues Brothers 2000, but only for the music.

Elspode 04-29-2006 02:17 AM

Matrix as one is my vote as well.

Regarding The Passion of the Christ...are we going to *allow* snuff films?

smoothmoniker 04-29-2006 11:13 AM

Oh man, how could I forget Moulin Rouge. Absolutely yes.

Cyclefrance 05-09-2006 05:46 PM

When's this one gonna roll, Mr De Mille - oops, Sorry, UT...!

Cyclefrance 05-19-2006 05:39 AM

Well, it's pretty safe to say it won't be the Da Vinci code, but is this thread going to run or is it consigned to the WPB?

Undertoad 05-19-2006 07:15 AM
