Cellar Field of 64, #5: recent films
Nominate your favorite films since 2000. The nominations are part of the seeding, so don't just list at random - only mention your favorites. If others have already mentioned films you like, you can second them. Seconding goes into the seeding too.
For eligibility of films we'll rely on imdb.com's release year. To get a good list of films to choose from, you can use IMDB's advanced search feature. http://www.imdb.com/list In section 2 of that page, you can enter a year or range of years. In section 3, exclude TV and video stuff using the drop-down boxes. Set a minimum of 3000 voters to limit your results to most popular films. In section 4, hide AKA titles. |

I hereby rescind my wet blanket statement in the other thread. There are plenty of good movies since 2000. Good idea, Cyclefrance.

can we have some consenus on whether the films should be done indididually or as a trilogy ( I would favour the second option...)? |
seconds Chicago and Moulin Rouge and LOTR as trilogy

Might as well put all the LOTRs into one slot. Tolkien considered it a single book, after all.

This was an interesting excercise in that I've only seen about 40 of the 400+ movies with > 10000 votes. I really have to see more movies. So, here is my list:
28 Days Later... Almost Famous Aviator, The Bourne Identity, The Chicago K-Pax Lost in Translation Memento Million Dollar Baby My Big Fat Greek Wedding Perfect Storm, The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Ring, The Spanglish What Lies Beneath |
seconds Serenity for the hell of it.....

OMG I forgot Super Troopers!!!

Actually, I'm looking forward to the contest helping me to decide what movies to watch to catch up to the 21st century. Go Cellar-64-Movies!!!! Ra !!!!!!!!!!!
|
There is a UK movie that didn't get much press here in the US called "Millions". It's maybe the most perfect family movie ever made - innocent enough for children, but complex and wonderfully made. See it.
The rest of the list: Crash (2004) Hotel Rhwanda (2004) Cinderella Man (2005) Finding Neverland (2004) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) Secondhand Lions (2003) The Incredibles (2003) |
Have to add:
Keeping Mum Nice Patrick Swayze, Rowan Atkinson and Maggie Smith black comedy in the true 'Ealing' style - it won't win, but is one to get out on DVD if you fancy something light and chuckly to watch....(suppose it should go in the DVD thread but probably everyone interested is looking here anyway at the moment, and, hey, it's lazy Friday...) |
Serenety is thirded. I don't much watch movies anymore, I have about the same contempt for modern movies as I do for modern music. But Firefly/Serenety are really good, getting the right balance between sci-fi and old-fashioned, funny and serious, inane and intellectual.

Millions is a good movie, but my kids would be scared to see it. There are a few frightening scenes. (For little kids.)
|
Points of procedure:
- By general consensus we treat the LOTR films as one. Anyone disagrees speak now or forever hold your peace. - There was no consensus on the Harry Potter movies, the floor is open to debate this question. - After figuring out the Potter matter, there will be a massive renomination round of all films nominated once. |
Might as well lump Harry Potter together too.
|
LOTR is one story set over three films
Potter is a series of stories set in the same place with the same people. Treat LOTR as one, treat Potter individually. |
I concur with SM.
|
Pitch Black
Chronicles of Riddick Sin City Team America: World Police Gladiator The Passion of the Christ The Matrix (series) Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe |
Sorry to keep being the movie Nazi, but The Matrix (1) was released in 1999.
|
Like LOTR, it's one movie released in three segments, IMHO.
|
Go along with Smoothmoniker - LOTR = 1, HP = several
|
The Passion of the Christ
Chronicles of Narnia Black Hawk Down Shawn of the Dead The Ring Legend of Bagger Vance Man on Fire Men of Honor The Others Italian Job Road to Perdition Swordfish The Tailor of Panama The Terminal Walk the Line The Whole Nine Yards |
Sin City
Serenity Moulin Rouge The Italian Job |
Serenity
Chicago Moulin Rouge Saving Grace Once upon a time in Mexico Spy Kids Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams Spy Kids 3D; Game Over Pirates of the Carribean |
oh yeah,
High Fidelity |
Well now we're gonna need a consensus on the Matricies
|
Potter is like the Bond films. They are distinct.
The Matrix series is one. |
I'd go with The Matrix as one
|
Blues Brothers 2000, but only for the music.
|
Matrix as one is my vote as well.
Regarding The Passion of the Christ...are we going to *allow* snuff films? |
Oh man, how could I forget Moulin Rouge. Absolutely yes.
|
When's this one gonna roll, Mr De Mille - oops, Sorry, UT...!
|
Well, it's pretty safe to say it won't be the Da Vinci code, but is this thread going to run or is it consigned to the WPB?
|
My enthusiasm in entertaining you all in this manner, wanes.
I can give someone the password to the tool that builds the field. |
