Needs expanded FAQ section. I have to figure things out by trial and error.


Search function: I search things like 'upclose photos' I and still not find that thread.

BUT overall the user interface is wonderful with so many user friendly functions.

:confused: I didn't know there was such a thing as "up close photos" here, Are you thinking of "image of the day"?

Click "search", then "advanced search". Type "close ups" into window and choose "search titles only".

I'd really like a "mark thread as read" button.

The average Cellar thread gets pretty long.. often into double figures for the page count. On one of the other forums I use, clicking on a thread 'jumps' you straight into the thread at your last viewed poilnt, rather than at the top of the thread.....

Would it be possible to implement that here?

The "New Posts" search does that, and gives an icon you can use to hit the posts you haven't seen.

The reason that doesn't happen at thread-view level is because it requires a database lookup on each thread - and reducing the number of lookups on a single page is one way to improve performance.

Sure, every time I come to the Cellar, there is a checkmark next to any thread title that has had any activity since I left. Click that checkmark and it takes me to the first post in that thread I haven't seen. Always. :cool:

Well that's very weird because I don't have that. I must have turned it off somewhere for me.

I had been wishing there was a feature like that, a "new activity indicator" on the board itself.

Well, if you're adamant about not using the "New Posts" option, you can just check the icons. If the forum has this icon: http://cellar.org/images/statusicon/forum_new.gif, then it has new posts. If it has this icon: http://cellar.org/images/statusicon/forum_old.gif then it has none.

Then use this icon: http://cellar.org/images/buttons/firstnew.gif If it's there, it will pop you to the first new post. If it isn't there aren't any.

Also the envelope icon at the beginning of each thread title changes color, beige in unread, blue is read and an arrow means you've posted in that thread at some time. :mg:

I've also been wondering under what circumstances the thread title goes into bold print . . . ?

When there's a http://cellar.org/images/buttons/firstnew.gif, as far as I can tell.

It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature.

I love how I can reset the signature and it randomly cycles. Well I think it does. I just can't wait to see what it comes up with next.

If I push the' respond to this post' icon. I don't see where it specifies to which post I was responding.

Most people don't use the nested view where that would be visible. If the context is not immediately obvious, it's best to use http://cellar.org/images/buttons/quote.gif instead of http://cellar.org/images/buttons/quickreply.gif, and delete all but the relevant bit. Lots of times I don't quote someone, thinking that I'll be the post immediately after them, and it turns out that someone snuck in before me. I'll often then edit my post to include a quote.

(I just happened to see this after making a similar suggestion on adifferent post - probably the one that prompted you to write this. :) )
