|
twine?
|
coil basket?
|
Are those tendrils of smoke I see?
|
looks like cotton fuzz.
|
No correct answers so far, but it's obviously some kind of coarse natural fiber, so you are on the right track that way.
I'll post the answer and a zoomed-out picture to give perspective a bit later this afternoon. |
corn husks
|

I'm heading into a long meeting now, and don't want to keep you all in such painful suspense.
It's the edge of a hand-woven cattail rush seat on an antique ladderback chair. Much like this one. |
I was *never* gonna get that.

I've seen my Grandmother make many of those chair seats. I've even seen her make a couple out of twisted strips of brown paper grocery bags. Honest.:)
|
So... where did the smoke come from? I can see a few whisps in the first pic.
Oh, I guess it's just green fuzz. :right: |
There's tiny green snakes on the chair.
|
For cryin' out loud, I do occasionally work at work...and since I don't have net at the RatCave, you might have to wait 24 or 48hrs between posts. That being said, I did take some pictures last night and over lunch will get them downloaded offa my camera and posted. Then I probably won't be back till Monday. Sheesh. Those AG guys got to you. :)

Small #3- That's all for now, answers Monday!

I'm going to go with fabric with little sequindy things sewn in for #1.
For #2, I'd suggest a speaker grille. EDIT: I didn't see #3 before I posted. For that one I'm going to have to go with generic plastic child's toy, placed in the microwave for several minutes. |
Nice pictures.
Number 3 scares me. |
#3 -- What. The. Fuck.
|
#1 is tights or stockings of some sort.
|
Looking at these, especially in the first, the out of focus parts are really pix'ly (sp).
I took the images in the highest mode on my camera (6M*), then cropped them a bit in photoshop, saved as level 1 JPEG (prolly the prob), then once importing, noticed still too wide to fit on screen. So I changed the image size to be 750 pixels across, (about 1/3 of what it was) at 300 pix/inch. What would be a better/best way to do this? New at this kind of manipulations. Thanks! I am facinated by small stuff, always taking apart stuff as a kid to see what was inside-though probably not to the extent of some here from what I've read. So, I grew up and became a microscopist/scientist type person. At least, that's what I get paid to be, when I'm not here... |

#1 looks like a crdl scattered on some fabric.
<strike>#2 is a microphone, methinks. </strike> #3 is an adorable cast resin stauette of some kind. |
#3 is a molded rubber/vinyl halloween mask.

#1 looks like bent metal tabs like they put decorative buttons on hats with.
#2 is holes. #3 is the eye of a toy or mask. |

#1 = Sparkly thingies on the top of a dress I bought at a consignment shop (for $2!) to wear to Vegas...I'll post me wearing it once we get back if you like;)

#3= A bear lamp in my kid's bedroom. Redecorating it this spring, I can't wait. The bedroom, I mean. Way to go Wolf. I figured it would be super easy for someone who collects these types of things, or buys them for someone who does. Obviously Kitsune does not...:D
|
I'll try to be a little more creative and post more this week.
WHO'SE NEXT !??! |

OK, this one isn't really a macro shot, but it's still a "what is it?"
|
a bag for radioactive waste?
|
Well, you could put radioactive waste in it, but I wouldn't recommend it.
|
looks like a costume mask for some kind of alien or robot....and a lens cap

It's the ExitAir emergency evacuation hood. They gave a bunch of these out at work after 9/11. We happened to move offices about a year ago, and after the move I went back to the old building to make sure my department got everything. There were a bunch of these things kicking around in various empty offices, so I brought one home to play with. It has a strechy rubber neck flange to keep things air tight, and has huge activated charcoal filters in the front and back to let you breath without smoke getting in. I haven't tried it in a smoky environment, so I don't know if that works, but it doesn't fog up inside like you would expect, and there is plenty of air for breathing. Plus, as you can see below, it's very stylish. I have two shrink wrapped ones in my office right now. |
:alien:
Why orange? Help you see better in smoke? Might be kind of fun and possibly useful to have laying around. Like for if I tried to cook something from scratch... |
Looks like someone is ignoring the "this bag is not a toy!" warning, again.
|
If they handed those out at your office ... then your employer is either paranoid, a viable target, or both.
You don't happen to work in Langley, by any chance do you? |
Nah, it's more like the employees were paranoid, and the employer was trying to soothe them. Besides, this was DC just after 9/11 and we had planes falling from the skies around us, anthrax shutting down our post office, and fucking snipers shooting at us. Crazy times.
|
In hindsight, maybe that picture belongs in the " [plastic] bag on cellarite" thread.
|
My office in DC...
We have the same type of emergency evacuation hoods, flashlights and batteries, small packs of handi wipes, and bottled water in gov't issued bags at each desk. You KNOW none of this shit is going to save you... but for some it does have a calming affect. Me I still keep an extra pair of jogging shoes in my office... it's a long walk back home, on 9/11 it took over 8 hours to travel 56 miles home... |

i think there shouldnt be a filter on the bag. if youre high up in a building thats going to collapse. they should just put plastic bags over their heads to speed up the whole process.
also. having them there AFTER 9/11 is just like putting a bullet proof vest on after youve been shot. |
