This harrowing picture shows an X-ray of a 15-year-old boy's skull after a five inch knife was plunged into his head.

Amazingly the teenager survived the stabbing and ten months on from the attack has enrolled in college.

The boy and two other youngsters were attacked when they tried to stop a friend being robbed at a bus stop in Walworth, south London.

The muggers responded by using a kitchen knife to stab one of the boys in the forehead, another twice in the back and a third in the shoulder.

He survived because he was rushed to hospital with the knife still sticking out of his head and doctors managed to operate in time.

X-rays released by police show how deep the knife penetrated, while still missing the boy's brain. Surgeons said if anyone had tried to take it out he would have died.

The boy's two friends also recovered after the attack outside Tesco in the Old Kent Road on 28 November.

One of the muggers dropped a hat and his mobile at the scene and was arrested later at his home.

The boy, 17, was found guilty at Inner London Crown Court last week of attempted murder and two counts of GBH with intent.

He will be sentenced next month. Officers are still hunting the other two attackers.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man is in a serious condition after being stabbed repeatedly in Dudden Hill Lane in Willesden early today.

Good news for the victim, but if somebody stuck a 5 inch knife into my head and it missed my brain I think I'd be insulted. And if I wasn't sufficiently insulted then my siblings would take on the job. :)

Who the hell stabs somebody in the head?

glatt 09-30-2008 10:07 AM

I've never tried to stab anyone through the forehead, but I'd expect it would be difficult to control a knife in such a maneuver. I'm a little amazed that a knife could penetrate through a skull in the first place.

Flint 09-30-2008 10:08 AM

I think it entered the skin and curved around the outside of the skull.

Wonder if the Ginsu company will cash in on this promotional opportunity.

Maybe. I'm no radiologist.

This reminds me of the story of Phineas Gage, which I learned about in some psych class. In 1848 an accident sent an iron pole through his skull. Because he survived it was a look into brain injuries as it relates to personality.

Fascinating stuff.

Look towards the bottom of the page on the right to see an artist depiction of the pole in the head. This is the image sparked when I saw zen's picture of the knife in the head.

Is he the guy that turned into a complete dick?

dar512 09-30-2008 10:17 AM

Yes.

HungLikeJesus 09-30-2008 10:24 AM

Why did they take the first X-ray with his sunglasses on? (Maybe they were Ray Bans?)

Here are photos of a soldier who survived being stabbed in the head with a 9 inch knife.

Shawnee123 09-30-2008 10:39 AM

That was actually what I said under my breath when I viewed that pic, Sarge!

Nice use of the nasal cavity, there.

Not necessarily stabbing someone, but if you get into a knife fight cutting them across the forehead causes them to bleed profusely and hopefully into their eyes to give you both a psychological and tactical advantage in the fight.

Now losing your knife in someone else's head is the wrong way to get into a knife fight.

Treasenuak 09-30-2008 08:04 PM

How... why... ICK! How did that NOT kill him?!

Why, are you due to be stabbed in the head or something?

And what, no "splitting headache" gags?

And this connects to the "knife advice" thread. This is what happens when an amateur takes a knife into a fight - inflicts a non-fatal wound to the head and loses his weapon, then drops his hat and phone and runs. With any weapon, you really need to know what you're doing.

Upper cut to the torso, either under the rib cage aiming upwards, or right of center, angled upwards to slide between the ribs. Or so I've heard.

Not only did they stab him in the head, they also got him with the purple sharpie.

I hope not!

You posted this for Oct 1, yesterday. Yesterday was September 30 for me. Probably a time zone thing.

ZenGum 10-01-2008 06:24 PM
