Alas the closest Trader Joes is 150 miles away in Madison Wi.

Gravdigr 12-05-2015 03:44 PM

I would think cheese ships well enough.

I've had some awesome new Zealand white cheddar brought over on da plane from an ex in-law. I would love to try the arran cheddar but I don't have access to a trader Joe's. I wonder if they carry it at jungle Jims in Cincinnati? Not that I'll get there anytime soon either. I'm drooling just thinking about it, though!

It's *delicious*. A bit salty, with occasional crystals, surprising and interesting. Highly recommended.

It doesn't really matter as I'm up for either, but are you touting the cheese or Arran?

I saw "Isle of Arran" and IMMEDIATELY thought of you, limey.

"We have to buy this. I have to buy this."

"What are you talking about? We're having xyz for dinner, aren't we?"

(whatever was already in the basket, since the cheese and wine is at the far end of the store from the entrance, bastids).

"Yes, but this is for/from the cellar."

"Ohhhh... ok."

It made it to Washington from Scotland, after all.

xoxoxoBruce 12-05-2015 09:06 PM

That's not far... over the pole. :haha:
but they can't do that around the 24th through the 27th, so stock up now.
I'll get some tomorrow even though Joe's is only open 8AM to 9PM and is 4.5 miles away.

Both. The cheese is excellent though. It's my regular cheese at home.

busterb 12-06-2015 11:47 AM

I think the closes Joe's to me is Houston, TX. I'll pass. But, I got some Irish cheese from Sam's that was damn good.

classicman 12-06-2015 12:33 PM

Its about 1/2 mile if I walk and still less than a mile if I drive... but that SS stuff needs to get done and I fired my elf.

busterb 12-06-2015 04:09 PM

S ame here new keyboard. That's the damn space SS has not made a move here also!

monster 12-06-2015 07:01 PM

Got some!

That store was furkin crazy tonight. I'd'a walked out if I wasn't on a mission.....

orthodoc 12-06-2015 07:06 PM

No Trader Joe's within 90 miles, but next time I'm in that neighborhood I'll be on a mission! The local grapevine says a Trader's is to be built only 35 miles away, in the city where I'll be working come January - bit of a delay, but I'll check that out too.

OK, so I slog the whole 4.5 miles to Trader Joes in Media, and it wasn't easy. There was construction on the Manchester Ave bridge over Ridley Creek, and a detour on East Knowlton, it must have taken me at least 15 minutes to get there. If that wasn't bad enough it took me another 4 or 5 minutes to find a parking spot right by the door.

Then I had to walk all the way down to the cheese section which must be over 100 feet. But the cheese wasn't there, sixty eleven other cheeses but no Arran Cheddar. So I accosted a girl working there, demanding she satisfy my desire. She took me into a back room and searched Joe's computer files, but couldn't satiate my lust. She suggested I try the woman in the office, saying maybe she could satisfy my desires. I headed that way, but the girl caught up with me saying she found it on the computer but this store didn't have it. Probably she was too distracted when I was standing close.

The woman in the office said she'd be happy to try to satisfy my lust. I told her that would forestall my from reporting to my Arran agent that Joe wasn't
doing a proper marketing job. So she locate the cheese at the Delaware store, telling me she didn't know the address but it's right on 202.

Rte 202 area in Delaware, snuggled up against Pennsylvania, but with no sales tax, is shopping galore. A divided highway ranging from 4 to 8 lanes
lined with gigantic shopping centers. These shopping centers have signs by the road with the major stores listed. After a couple passes and asking 3 people(hey, just because I asked for directions doesn't make me less manly), I finally located it in a shopping center with Target and a Billion other stores, but no signs on 202.

My family from the time my mother was a toddler, would trek to the Crowley cheese factory in Vermont. You might have seen it on "Dirty Jobs". They made cheddar that was superb, mild to extra sharp, in 33 lb wheels and 5lb wheels flavored with sage. Over the years and many miles, trying cheese from coast to coast, I've never found anything close to that cheesy goodness... until now. I admit out of all the cheeses I've sampled, I'm partial to Cheddar, and god damn, this Arran cheddar is the real deal, as good as it gets. http://cellar.org/2015/hands19.gif

From the labeling this is Trader Joes own brand. I wonder if the bring it over in bulk and package it here to save shipping costs, or provide labels for the Scots to package it there? I've no idea if cheese is marketed in Scotland, or the UK, in 249 gram(8.8 oz) packages?

I hope you're on commission, Limey!

lumberjim 12-07-2015 06:21 PM

You went to classicman's Trader Joe. I was planning on hitting the one in Gateway Shopping center next time I go to Amanda's via 202, but a search shows one in Marlton 6 miles from here. I may pop over there tomorrow on the way to work.

Bruce, did you ever go to the Ye Olde Cheese Shoppe in Gap, Pa? They have a real REAL good selection of cheddars. I got some Irish cheese there that still stands out in my memory 5 years later.

It's on 41 just a 1/4 mile south of 30.

Undertoad 12-07-2015 06:25 PM

OK if that work happened on Sunday, you passed two morons going the other way, to the new Wegman's on 202.

Well we wanted their chuck roast. It's good chuck roast. Trader Joe's doesn't have chuck roast like that.

Now I'm motivated, was the Wayne store one of the options? I could just pick up the phone and call the Wayne store and find out, couldn't I?

ETA which one of us is going to call, Jim? I vote you call. No me ugh

lumberjim 12-07-2015 06:31 PM

Calling the Marlton store now. Jeff is checking.

Undertoad 12-07-2015 06:32 PM

ok cool ask him if the wayne store has it, they can apparently cross check

lumberjim 12-07-2015 06:33 PM

NOICE.

He's only got 2 left, but they are on hold for me to pick up tomorrow.

Undertoad 12-07-2015 06:34 PM

I'm just going over to the wayne store. I'm just gonna go there. I'm so retarded.

lumberjim 12-07-2015 06:35 PM

Calling Wayne for you you big sissy. Rebecca is checking now

Nope, don't think so, yet. ;)
Most of the cheese specialty stores that deal only in cheese, and maybe fancy crackers, usually have a broad but repeating selection. I suppose if someone comes in and finds something they like, they'll come back asking for the same. So the shop is sort of obligated to carry that after a few customers start asking.
The other thing is give a piece of sharp cheddar to people raised on Velveeta and Kraft Mac&Cheese, will often not like it. Oooo it tastes funny, it's strange, it's awful, it's not cheese, I've seen more than one spit it out. That makes it harder for specialty shops to find enough clientele to survive. It also makes them hedge their bets with blander cheeses.

Uh, the Media store called and it was bagged and ready to go when I got there, so I didn't get an eyeball on what they had left.

http://cellar.org/2015/arrancheddar1sm.jpg

And presented here in a tasteful musical theme
http://cellar.org/2015/arrancheddar2sm.jpg

I would say, not too mild, but not too sharp; nicely complex with both a bit of sweetness and a bit of nuttiness. Would go well with any accompaniment, but has plenty of fortitude to stand alone.

But enough about Limey.

:D

"Extra Mature" I don't know about all that

:D

Undertoad 12-07-2015 07:52 PM

Still, it is excellent... as has been everything from Arran. They seem to know how to get things done with quality.

xoxoxoBruce 12-07-2015 07:53 PM

Pairs well with chocolate truffles.

Undertoad 12-07-2015 07:59 PM

I have a complaint, with good cheese you're spose to wait for it to be room temperature, but this doesn't seem to last long enough, so far it's gone before it has a chance to warm up.

xoxoxoBruce 12-07-2015 08:02 PM

Rules are made to be broken. Besides, chewing brings it to temperature quickly. :haha:

Griff 12-08-2015 06:24 AM

Gah! My closest is North Wales 92.24 miles then Wayne then State College. No cheese for me.

limey 12-08-2015 08:08 AM

Really glad to see how you're enjoying the Arran cheese! Thanks for taking up the challenge! I'll pass all these comments to Paul - head of Cheese at the creamery down the road! :D

xoxoxoBruce 12-08-2015 08:34 AM

Yeah, make him sorry he did that when nobody was around. :urinal:

fargon 12-08-2015 11:57 AM

I found a Trader Joes in Rochester Mn. 60 miles away, next week I will get some.

lumberjim 12-08-2015 12:39 PM

I picked up my cheese today. They had held it for me overnight, so I had to go to the little pulpit and ask for it. The guy at that desk raved about it. Then the cashier said it was 'legit'. I can't wait to try it. I grabbed it on my way to work, and left it in the car.... I'll have to go get it when I get hungry.

xoxoxoBruce 12-08-2015 12:51 PM

Damn, all that anticipation will be tough to satisfy with mere cheese But Limey wouldn't lie to you, her oldest and deepest friend. :haha:

glatt 12-08-2015 12:54 PM

Got two! I'll try some tonight.

It's Cheese Degreese out there today

Yummy! A bit sharp but not overpowering. Smooth. And I like the hint of crystals. Polished off one of the two.

I'm going to try it, but it'll have to be something special to be better than Leraysville 6 year aged cheddar. :yum:

The family also enjoys Trader Joe’s Unexpected Cheddar

Sundae 12-09-2015 10:35 AM

Being a cheese fan, I have to admit I did enjoy Arran cheddar.
It's strong/ mature (sharp) enough to stand out in big thick doorstep sandwiches, but not too overpowering for cheese on toast.

Cheddar isn't my favourite style of cheese by any stretch, but the Arran version is a good one. Holds its own well well with the Island's chutneys., pickles and mustards too.

Very pleased you Merkins have a chance at it - as far as I'm aware there aren't any English chain stores that sell it :sniff: Then again, finances (and lack of refrigeration) as they are in my life, I probably wouldn't be buying anyway.

I love when you get that salt crystal... So smooth. In retrospect, I should have cut smaller chunks. It's potent. Eating it slowly is recommended.
