zippyt,

I'm very sorry your family had to withstand the indignity of an uncle who went through a Keane period ...

LJ,

Quite a few of bruce's doodads are his creations. He does a lot of cool artistic things. The man has many hidden talents, and more depth than the Marianas trench.

zippyt 12-24-2003 01:25 AM

Why thank you LJ , I had it on my desk top for a while as well

Talk about timing. I just got a digital camera as an early Christmas present, so I'll start playing with it here.

This is a bookshelf my father and I made. The Audubon print above it was mounted and framed by my parents. The wooden box on the top right was a stocking stuffer from my grandfather from last year.

Kitsune 12-24-2003 09:46 AM

Only decent picture from my recent "stupid night explorations" -- the theme was "security" or "bad security". I thought the rust was kinda cool.

insoluble 12-24-2003 11:56 AM

LJ - that one from your son looks like "riding a great wave home on a sunny day" - sweet

wolf 12-24-2003 02:48 PM

Happy Monkey ... Great bookcase, although you have to reshoot the picture with better resolution on the books so we can snoop on your shelves ... I mean I can identify some Baen SF, and a Tony Hillerman, but what else you got there?

(I do not own a book case. I have enough books to stock a library. I have floors and what the apt. manager idenfied as a "linen closet".)

warch 12-24-2003 03:22 PM

I'll show you some of mine. Warning: Abstraction.

warch 12-24-2003 03:25 PM

Here is some color. (sorry. larger image than I thought)

Kitsune 12-24-2003 03:27 PM

Warch -- the black and white one is awesome! Is there any story behind it, or is it just complete and total abstraction? I love the angles.

warch 12-24-2003 03:27 PM

Here is an intaglio print.

warch 12-24-2003 03:29 PM

Here's a collage thing.

warch 12-24-2003 03:32 PM

And here's a textile I made. Ikat technique.

warch 12-24-2003 03:35 PM

Thanks. Its from a series of charcoal drawings, they are quite big, and based somewhat on landscape impressions- Prairie farmland, but I like that the scale could be almost anything, macro or micro.here's another one:

elSicomoro 12-24-2003 03:45 PM

It looks like someone has microdots in their hand.

(No, I haven't been drinking...yet.)

Good stuff, Warch!

warch 12-24-2003 03:54 PM

Can you tell I'm killing time till I can leave work?

elSicomoro 12-24-2003 03:56 PM

I can see through the back of someone's head into their brain...

warch 12-24-2003 03:57 PM

One more then its adult beverage time! sexy!

Griff 12-24-2003 07:03 PM

Did you guys notice that warch freakin rocks?! Too bad Ogg isn't here to explain it all to us.

I am not sorry that i had an uncle that went thru a Keane period . As ANY artist can tell you there is a period where they replecate other atrist works to get their methods right . He died befor he could come to fruition however. So there are DAMN few of his works in existance :(

And there is NO denying that Bruce has the dodadest dodads of ALL dodadnum. I pointed out to LJ that there was a dodad thread already. I took his responce to imply that he wanted to see some of the creations from fellow cellerites .
I would like to see some closeups of the joints of Griffs timber frame house. I see that as art .
And more of Beasts' pottery .
InMyHumbleOpinion .:D

wolf 12-25-2003 12:25 AM

I'm not at all dissing your uncle, zip, I'm sorry if it came across that way.

Speaking as someone whose artistic talents are not of the making recognizable pictures on paper with pencil variety, I respect ANY artistic endeavor.

That doesn't stop me from making fun of Keane, though. It's pretty much a life long aversion.

these 2 pics need some explaination . I was on a fly fishing Club outing, fishing with a friends rod that they had just finished building , the whole club ( 100+ folks ) was watching , and lo and behold i cought a fish . They all cheered for me , thus the shit eating grin on my face .

zippyt 12-25-2003 01:00 AM

I fought the fish and got him in , they ALL cheered again . thus the bow . Then i proceded to fall flat on my ass in the river infront of god and every body. :3eye:
There was a club member with a cam on the shore with an auto winder and a telefoto lense . He got the WHOLE sequense on film. These are the only 2 he thought i would want . I told him i wanted the WHOLE thing , me falling and all .
I meen HELL if you can't laugh at your self WHO the can you laugh at ???
This was a few years ago and i haven't heard from him since .

zippyt -
dodadnum is the coolest word I've heard in a while - :)

Griff 12-25-2003 10:35 AM

You asked for it

This is the beam that helps keep the rafter from flexing under load while resisting spreading. I made it with a half-lap dovetail joint pegged with an oak trenail (peg).

http://home.epix.net/~griffins/CathHalfLap.jpg

Griff 12-25-2003 10:39 AM

This is the corner above the "cure couch" the knee brace keeps the weight of the roof from flexing the post above the joint for the first bent.

http://home.epix.net/~griffins/Corner.jpg

Griff 12-25-2003 10:47 AM

This is the south post on the 2nd bent. You can see the joists going into the main beam as well as the brace which protects the shouldered tongue which goes into the post.

I'm not visually artistic, I'm aurally artistic, but I've posted a couple of links to some of the work I've done and didn't get any response. Either I suck, or the file size is intimidating...

aurally + artistic = autistic ?

zippyt 12-25-2003 03:07 PM

Thank you Mr. Griff !!!!!
I have seen your web site with the pics of you makeing your house . How did you get the design for the house ?? did you make it , or did you hire the design out ??
This is what I like , functional art :D :D

Griff 12-25-2003 03:42 PM

You're welcome zip! Considering the number of hours I've put into her, I'm always happy to explain what I've been tooling away at. I read the books and designed the frame around what we wanted to include. A professional architect would have kept me out of trouble but its not the same as doing the whole process.

Sorry, I don't think I have any Baen SF or Tony Hillerman. It seems to be mostly Ace, Bantam, Del Rey, or Tor SF.

It is primarily everything I could get by Larry Niven and Neil Gaiman, sprinkled with some Tolkien, Asimov, E.E. "Doc" Smith, Stephen Donaldson, Neal Stephenson, and Robert Anton Wilson.

There's another (Ikea-style) bookshelf in another room. It's got textbooks, reference books, children's books, and a full shelf of books I haven't read yet. Both shelves are almost full, so my dad and I are in the process of making a new one 8 feet wide by 6 feet tall. Should last a while.

Coming up soon: My enertainment center.
