Premier League

Well the Premier League is coming to NBC. Any suggestions on which team to support? I am leaning towards Arsenal, but Manchester United stock is traded on the NYSE. I think it would be great to own stock in your team.

Thoughts? Words of wisdom?

Gravdigr 07-18-2013 04:50 PM

NBC is dead to me.

Sundae 07-19-2013 10:47 AM

West Ham.
For no better reason than that my Dad's family were West Ham, so I am too.
And then the street I lived in in London (after I left the pub) was pretty much at the end of the street from Upton Park.

Also, no-one could ever call you a glory-hunter if you support West Ham.
If you admit it, they'll assume you are a dedicated follower of football and you can make as many gaffes as you like and will be forgiven.

Undertoad 07-19-2013 11:41 AM

West Ham are currently bottom of the league table!

monster 07-19-2013 08:00 PM

City or United :)

Griff 07-19-2013 08:31 PM

You should go Jersey shopping pick colors you like then defend your choice. Tottenham has Panda colors... :)

monster 07-19-2013 08:39 PM

huh? Spurs aren't B&W I r all a confuse.

Griff 07-19-2013 09:20 PM

I must have mixed em up...

Sundae 07-20-2013 03:57 AM

Mixed them up with the Toon?

What a beautiful photograph!

Sundae 07-24-2013 03:51 AM

It would be.
Except it's full of Arsenal fans.

Never trust a North Londoner.

DanaC 07-24-2013 06:45 AM

Inasmuch as I follow any team, I generally consider myself a ManU supporter, but as Bolton was the town where I grew up, I also have an affection for BW.

Shame Bolton Wanderers aren't in the Prem now. They've got some serious history behind them.

Possibly one of the most famous footballing pictures. From the 1923 Cup Final, known forever after as The White Horse Final:

http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images...jpg?1345363804

Quote:

The 1923 FA Cup Final was an association football match between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United on 28 April 1923 at the original Wembley Stadium in London. The showpiece match of English football's primary cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (better known as the FA Cup), it was the first football match to be played at Wembley Stadium. King George V was in attendance to present the trophy to the winning team.

Quote:

The final was preceded by chaotic scenes as vast crowds surged into the stadium, far exceeding its official capacity of approximately 125,000. A crowd estimated at up to 300,000 gained entrance and the terraces overflowed, with the result that spectators found their way into the area around the pitch and even onto the playing area itself. Mounted policemen, including one on a light-coloured horse which became the defining image of the day, had to be brought in to clear the crowds from the pitch and allow the match to take place. The match began 45 minutes late as crowds stood around the perimeter of the pitch. Although West Ham started strongly, Bolton proved the dominant team for most of the match and won 2–0. David Jack scored a goal two minutes after the start of the match and Jack Smith added a controversial second goal during the second half. The pre-match events prompted discussion in the House of Commons and led to the introduction of safety measures for future finals. The match is often referred to as the "White Horse Final" and is commemorated by the White Horse Bridge at the new Wembley Stadium.

Quote:

The image of Billie the white horse remains famous within English football lore, and the match is often referred to as "The White Horse Final".[24][33][48] Billie's rider, George Scorey, was rewarded by the Football Association with free tickets to subsequent finals, but he had no interest in football and chose not to attend.[23]
In 2005, a public poll chose that the new footbridge near the rebuilt Wembley Stadium would be named the White Horse Bridge.[49] The executive director of the London Development Agency, which organised the poll, stated that the choice of name was appropriate given that the bridge, like the horse, would improve safety for fans at Wembley.[50] Scottish newspaper the Daily Record claimed that fans of the national team of Scotland had voted in large numbers so as to prevent a former England player or manager being honoured, and also because "White Horse" is also the name of a brand of whisky.[51] In 2007 a play based around the reactions of a group of Bolton residents to the events of the final was staged at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton.[52]
The play was written by J's dad :)

That is serious cool potatoes.

lookout123 08-23-2013 04:37 PM

there is only one club worthy of support and that is Arsenal FC. your new addiction awaits. of course, you will end the campaign in tears.

if you pick Manchester city or Chelsea you might as well announce to the world that you love walmart and all they do for their communities.

if you love the new York Yankees and Dallas cowboys then Manchester United is for you.

i'll see you in may.

Clodfobble 08-23-2013 04:54 PM

LOOKOUT!

Good to see you, man. How're things hanging?

lookout123 08-23-2013 05:11 PM

Thank you Slang.

Very good to see you up and about and taking nourishment lookout.

Big Sarge 08-27-2013 09:10 AM

We had a draw against Chelsea. I think this is the first time in app. 4 years. People are singing the praises of Rooney (is he still leaving?). I was more impressed with Valencia. Anyone else catch the highlights on Fox Sports?

Big Sarge 09-01-2013 07:22 PM

Can you believe we lost to Liverpool??? Talk about the shame....

Sundae 09-02-2013 06:37 AM

Could be worse. Spurs lost to Arsenal.

Big Sarge 09-02-2013 11:35 AM

I like Arsenal, mainly because of the name. I hope this loss doesn't affect the stock. I've already lost 29 cents per share. Do you think if the stock drops too low Obama might give them a "bail out"?

lookout123 09-04-2013 12:01 AM

Sundae, you are obviously trying to play the troll because no self respecting woman would dare admit they support spuds. It has been nearly 20 years since we had a year without St Totteringham's day... and 2014 shall be no different.

North London is Red and White. Or so I'm told by those who've been there. ;)

Sundae 09-04-2013 08:28 AM

Never trust a North Londoner.
So my Dad says.

Over here, we're forever blowing bubbles.
You can enjoy boring, boring Arsenal as much you like.

lookout123 09-04-2013 09:23 PM

Oh, for the love. Better than a Millwall thug... er supporter, i suppose. Better try to get to a couple matches while you're still at Upton Park.

Big Sarge 09-24-2013 06:40 PM

We lost to Manchester City and are 8th in the League. No wonder the stock is dropping. It is all your fault. Y'all made me buy this dad gummed Manchester United. I knew I should have backed Arsenal because they have a cool cannon on their uniform.

Griff 09-25-2013 05:50 AM

Did you see United yet? Its on netflix streaming.

DanaC 09-25-2013 06:05 AM

Tennant's performance in that film was excellent.

Big Sarge 09-25-2013 09:27 AM

I will have to watch that!!

Manchester United beat Sunderland and is ranked 9th. I don't see anyway we can catch Arsenal. Looks like we might end up middle of the pack. Of course, this affects our stock holdings

Danny Baker supports Millwall.
And my Uncles Ted and Charlie went to more than a few games at Milwall, but we're talking back in the '50s for them. And they had some right tasty mates, both being printers, so they knew they were safe if anyone tried to wade in.
You can't help what side of the river you were born on.

That's the trouble with any Premier team. Up and down. Just hope David Moyes is allowed to prove his worth. Managerial longevity is a problem for pretty much every team (including England) apart from the Arse these days... I might not lke Arsenal, but Wenger was a little like Fergie, brought up his own team, had the time to make his mistakes, settled in.

Big Sarge 12-06-2013 02:00 AM

Manchester United is 9th in the league. However, their stock is up 20 cents a share. I try to understand what the crowd chants, but I think it isn't in English. Stock returns have been minimal, but I'm still considering buying more shares

Sundae 12-07-2013 12:12 PM

They do speak English in Manchester, despite what your ears are telling you.

I would suggest that it was a natural censorship your ears were imposing, but having served in the Armed Forces I should think you've both heard and used language as salty as any heard on the terraces.

United are a gift to sports journalists in all strands of the media at present. Column inches to fill? Editorial to wraite? Airtime to pad out? Discuss Manchester United. Where ate they going wrong, are they going wrong, who should be dropped, who should be on the bench, why are they doing this and not that or that and not this etc etc etc.

Although this is briefly on hold as attention switches to Brazil 2015 and the fact we are in The Group of Death.

What is this? I check the broadcast tv for a baseball game and find English Premier on NBC and Bundesliga on Fox. Where were you dudes in my childhood?

xoxoxoBruce 04-09-2016 03:36 PM

In your childhood American broadcasting was protecting children from bad words, tits, and soccer. :crone:

Check out the greatest story never told, AFC Wimbledon.

Quote:

So, okay: In May of 2002, the English Football Association gave the owners of a club called Wimbledon F.C. permission to move 70 miles away, to a town called Milton Keynes. Despite fervent protests from Wimbledon fans, the FA decided that it was “not in the wider interests of football” to have a club based in Wimbledon.

This happens all the time in American sports — the Brooklyn Dodgers become the LA Dodgers, the Baltimore Colts became the Indianapolis Colts — but it doesn’t happen in England, where football teams are not franchises but rather community assets. For many Wimbledon fans, to lose their club was to lose their community. As one protest banner read, “A club is for life, not just for profit.”

Despite the defiant graffiti and protests, it appeared Wimbledon would be without a football club until a group of supporters decided they would just start a team. Of course, there were some initial challenges — for instance, none of them had any experience running a football club, and they also had no uniforms, no sponsors, no coaches, and no players
