Cellar member stats

Perhaps I'm easily amused. But as I was getting ready to go put the trash out, I noticed the little "members" button up next the the FAQ. It turns out you can get a listing of all the members, and you can sort them by number of posts. Since it displays 10 per page, it's not that hard to figure out some stats. So I couldn't resist:

364 members have never posted.

222 have posted exactly one time.

105 have posted twice.

74 have posted more than 100 times.

27, more than 500 times

20, more than 750

14, more than 1000

8, more than 2000,

and 3 more than 4000.

What does it mean? Not much. Still, I was curious.

Enjoy!

elSicomoro 11-20-2003 10:49 PM

And one that has posted more than 5000 times.

SteveDallas 11-20-2003 10:59 PM

There is? Oh, sorry, must have missed it. I'll have to look at it again tomorrow.

Torrere 11-21-2003 12:23 AM

syc, you account for approximately one eleventh of the total posts of the forum.

The top ten posters account for approximately one half of the total posts.

(By contrast, on the other forum I frequent, the top two posters both account for more than one seventh each, and the top ten posters account for nine tenths of the total posts).

Why does everyone base everything on post counts?

And what ARE we basing on post counts?

It's just statisitcs which clearly show that over 600 accounts on this board are unutilized. 364 are probably just cookie accounts(for easy browsing) and about 300 are possible troll accounts.

I just popped the 3 digits or more count to 75 this morning.

Yay me!

I'm interested in numbers. It doesn't mean anything. Like I said, I'm easily amused.

xoxoxoBruce 11-21-2003 05:20 PM

Hey thanks Steve. That's an interesting insight. :)

jeni 11-22-2003 01:49 PM

i used to be one of the top ten posters...then i sort of stopped posting.

post counts don't matter, but they will always be a contest to some people on EVERY forum. what should really count is the quality of the posts. and to most people, it does. it's just interesting to see who has the most to say, especially since those of us who have been here for years know who really does have the most to say.

jeni 11-23-2003 02:03 AM

Yes, almost 2 years.

It would have made the sentence a little bit longer if I were to have said "those of us who have been here for 1 year and 11 months." I think it's close enough. :3eye:

jaguar 11-23-2003 07:14 AM

I used to post far too much. Now i'm lucky if i get time to lurk.

elSicomoro 11-23-2003 12:06 PM

Admittedly, there were--and still are--times when I consider the number of posts to be a contest, though these moments happen less frequently now than in the past.

Why do I do it? I dunno...the competition in me perhaps? The most is best mentality? Just to be an ass? One or more of the above? *shrugs*

Do my moments of said mentality produce some lesser quality posts? Perhaps...but I've always tried to create posts that I think will be cool or have some sort of relevance. If I'm not happy with a post, I usually delete it.

I know it's stupid...there's absolutely no reason for me to be like that. It's not like Tony gives me a prize for having the most posts or anything like that. It's not like people will bow before me for having the most posts.

Whenever I feel one of those moments coming on, I just beat the above into my head...and have continued to do so over the past 3 years. It's starting to stick. :)

There's a fairly good chance that Bruce will pass me in the not-too-distant future, and I'm cool with that. One of these days, I may find myself towards the bottom...and I can handle that. People like and respect me here b/c of WHAT I'm posting, not because of HOW MANY posts I make.

Now I can't lie here...it is kinda cool to be the #1 poster. But at the same time, I think there are some disadvantages that come with it...or with being a Top 10 poster.

In some cases, people will look at the posts of the top posters to get a general sense of a board. And if they see that you're either posting shit or being an ass to others, that might cause them not to join or stay on the board. Hopefully, if people look at my posts here, they'll see that I'm knowledgeable, funny and respectful.

To expand on what Torrere mentioned, if so few people have made the bulk of posts, that might make someone feel like their thoughts won't have any value. I try to be even-handed, but there have been times where I've made a snide remark to a newbie (e.g. a recent remark I made to Jimbo, though I turned it into something humorous later as a sign of my "acceptance" of him).

And another problem with being one of the top posters is that you become more of a target to some--though it doesn't seem to happen here much. Xugumad seemed to be a bit like that. What a weenie.

In the end, I just try to post cool and/or relevant stuff, be respectful and enjoy the company and insight of others. I have my moments, but I'm working on them. I think we're all works in progress from birth until death anyway...

Of course, Slang fails to mention what an asshole he was when he first came on.

Here's one of our initial exchanges:

slang: "You left wingers may have had fun patting yourselves on the back bashing the Iraqi war/ Republicans/ Bush but you are in the minority now. Sorry."

syc: "Now? When would you say the left-wingers were last in the majority? Surely, you're not going to say that the current Democratic-controlled Senate and Clinton are really left-wingers, are you?"

slang: "Is tom Dascle left wing.YES!

Is Klinton (both Hitlary AND Bill) left wing YES!"

syc: "Thanks slang...you just gave me one of the best laughs I've had today. :)"

slang: " I read your sarcasm loud and clear. If you dont think Klinton isnt left wing maybe I should ask what your definition for left wing is."

Admittedly, I initially considered slang to be another kook. I was a bit hard on him at first...though he did kinda deserve it. :) But now, we're buddies...I even created a web page for him.

My one year anniversary is coming up on New Year's Eve, and I'm in 11th place on the most posted list.

Does anyone have a life for sale?

I attempted several versions of commentary to this, but a couple of them lead to TMI-land.

Nevermind.

xoxoxoBruce 11-23-2003 07:51 PM

I'm sure it's Wolf's dedication and TLC that's made Slang the man he is today. Wait...that sounds like blame. No, no.. that's not what I meant at all. Nevermind.

xoxoxoBruce 11-23-2003 07:59 PM

slang 11-23-2003 08:45 PM

It's ok syc. Radar thinks you're a legend and that means a lot.

elSicomoro 11-23-2003 08:59 PM

Ummm...yeah, that'd be like an endorsement from Saddam.

jeni 11-23-2003 10:11 PM

There he does, being sweet again ... implying that I'm normal. ;)
