Pretty damn impressive how far photography has come.

That's 10 terabytes of data whittled down to 3:18 of video.

That was really beautiful, thanks xoB.
I wonder what's going on at the leading tip of the strike before it's grounded. |
Longboarder soars down Colorado hill at 70mph.
I was going to put this in the 'Idiot of the Day' thread, but I'm in a reasonably charitable mood, being replete with Sunday lunch, so I didn't. Watch out for the sparks from the fasteners on his gloves when they make contact with the road surface. The comments suggest that the location is Coal Creek Canyon CO. Anyway, should I have the good fortune to visit Colorado once again, Hertz will have to forgo my custom as I shall be bringing my own skateboard. Tickets available at all prices. |
Impressive
|
Stupid, risking your own neck is one thing but endangering others is irresponsible.
|
So true. If skateboarding here someone would have taken him out on a curve. I never ride close to the center line unless I can see way ahead.
|
I've done 55 mph on a bicycle coasting downhill through the foothills of the Colorado Rockies; but, did it at 02:00 hrs. when there was no traffic. Even if a vehicle appeared, I'd see it's headlights from a distance and have time to react. A full moon coupled with a bicycle headlight provided adequate illumination. Max speed was limited by the sharpness and frequency of road curves, the height of my center of gravity, and traction of the bicycle tires.
Body position doesn't help much until one achieves about 90 mph. That's when a body starts to pick up aerodynamic properties that can be used to stabilize position and control changes. At 110 mph, I've been able to lock a motorcycle throttle, take my hands away from the steering and raise them to shoulder level using wind resistance and my free fall (parachuting) control skills to keep myself and the bike stable. |
I set the cruise on my bike yesterday at 62 on a 2 lane road without my hands on the bars for about 8 miles. Just stick my knee into the wind for curves. I frequently ride like this. When I had my Goldwing I would sit on the passenger seat up against the tour pack.
|
At that speed, the shifting of your weight when you put your knee out; also, leaning into the curve have more to do with it than wind resistance. It's more like riding a bicycle with no hands.
At high speeds, you don't have to stick parts of your body out, you just rotate the flats of your body. |

Did you notice no matter how steep or remote, there were well worn paths everywhere? The natives tell the tourists they're from sheep, but we know better. ;)
|
I did notice that.

Stumbled across this while looking for reaction vids - (my latest obsession, don't ask) - checked her channel looking for the oldest reaction to uk rap (I like the 'first time watching/listening...' type vids) - and the first vid on the channel is just her telling an anecdote -
She's a natural storyteller. She tells it well, but it's a fucking dark little tale. |
I'm sure you can relate...
|
I recommend you pause the very short video somewhere in the middle and then clickdrag the cursor around to change what you're looking at. Scrolling zooms in and out. Stunning. |

That vid didn't want to play for me. It played, but, only kinda.
I'll try again later. |
I'm not sure I know what that was.

Akala's Oxford Union lecture 2018
I loved this. For those who haven't been in the good music thread, he's my favourite rapper and also is an independent historian |
My new favourite youtube peep.

Saw that one. I appreciate his math skills.

They Shall Not Grow Old
The Imperial War Museum commissioned Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) to make a film commemorating the end of WW1.
He used archive film which was processed to allow it to be shown at the correct speed and in colour. The results are breathtaking and very moving. He tells the full story in an interview in the second video. |
I read they used lip readers to find out what the soldiers were actually saying.

That's amazing considering the empire's soldiers came from the far corners of the earth with different accents and idioms.

How you load the trailer makes a big difference...

That's the very video I was remembering when I watching that Bobcat try to pass it's pick up truck.
|
Yeesh.

Pay special attention at ~42 seconds, and 49 seconds...:3_eyes:
That's a lot of moving Earth, Precious. |
This is a little long at 11 minutes. BUT, it's Carl Reiner in he fourth story from the 8th episode of the second season of Night Gallery. A Tribute to the mythos of H.P. Lovecraft.
|
Takes a couple of minutes to get going, but is really interesting and fun once it does.
I really like The Cynical Historian (hmmm might go post his channel in Youtube channel recommendations) - don't always agree with his interpretation of things, but i like what he does. |
An introduction but hardly scratched the surface.
|
Oh completely. It's only intended as such - he has a whole series of them flagging up important books and historians in various areas of study.
I did enjoy the pinko bingo though :) The Making of the English Working Class is one my favourite history books. Deeply problematic, as any history which adheres to a grand narrative is bound to be, but fascinating and beautifully written. It's a wonderfully human book, I think. Thompson did a brilliant job of breathing life into his subjects. |

Thanks. That book freaked me out when I was a kid. |

Drone footage of the aftermath of the Malibu fire. Concrete slabs with a pile of ashes that used to be a house, yet green trees between the slabs.
|
The trees will soon die from the heat of the fire and turn brown.

But why doesn't it look like this, it's hard to believe those houses burning up didn't generate enough heat to cook that greenery.
|
Let's see if we can find pics of the same place in week or so.
|
The streets are so clean. I guess ashes blow away.

"Man, it sure is hot."
"Yeah, but, it's not too bad under this beautiful shade tree." "And I feel safe here, with my bike." Spontaneous my big ol'hairy butt!!!! That tree laid in wait for some unsuspecting dude to get all hot, and come to the tree for respite from the heat. And then, when he least expected it...Gotta be one of them Australian trees that follows ya home at night and tries to bugger ya in ya sleep. |
