Talking Heads

Spexxvet 04-25-2006 08:21 AM

Heads.

And what Wolf said goes for me, too. Except I agree with the Floyd and Queen selections. :o

Ibby 04-25-2006 08:42 AM

RUSH! HOW could you vote against Geddy, Peart and Lifeson?!

barefoot serpent 04-25-2006 09:06 AM

Talking Heads

Elspode 04-25-2006 10:19 AM

Talking Heads. And all of you who voted down The Beatles are surely going to rot in a flaming hell where the only music to be heard is Britney Spears tunes rearranged as Muzak.

TiddyBaby 04-25-2006 10:25 AM

Stop Making Sense (vhs/dvd), at that college concert was subtle build up from nothing... They ended up a tight art form...

The Heads

Undertoad 04-25-2006 11:01 AM

Heads for the win.

Nirvana (3)
vs
Jimi Hendrix Experience (2)

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands

TiddyBaby 04-25-2006 11:05 AM

another tuff one....
dammit.

Im watching Audioslave/Rage concerts right now.... I keep hearing jimi hendrix influences... (probly my imagination)

I go with Jimi... ( i'd like to hear a jam with him and Primus)

barefoot serpent 04-25-2006 11:10 AM

Jimi!

lumberjim 04-25-2006 11:10 AM

hENDRIX

TiddyBaby 04-25-2006 11:43 AM

(oh crap, now I'm watching the Foo Fighters, which may not exist without the Nirvana thing ... including todays' Queens of Stones, and Eagles of Death Metal, also)

Screw it, the Foo Fighters are a jumping good time band, second to Me First and the Gimmee Gimmes...

Dammmm that grundge influence, is hard to see what's more influential.

Spexxvet 04-25-2006 12:08 PM

Nirvana, though I understand the "importance" and talent of Hendrick.

Elspode 04-25-2006 01:59 PM

It is tough, but I have to go with Jimi. Can't have my old fart status revoked.

Back in 1972, the Beatles WERE MUZAK. Progressive Rock got no air play on the radio. I got tired of people asking me why I didn't like the Beatles like everyone else did. They thought I listened to obscure stuff: Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Gryphon, Trimvirat, Renaissance --- that was when you used a lower-case 'a' in 'alternative'.

Elspode 04-25-2006 02:21 PM

Nonsense...I am a huge Prog Rock fan, and I've never thought the Beatles to be Muzak. Hell, I think Glenn Miller was a genius, I can't get enough Nat King Cole and I practically worship Scott Joplin. None of that ever stopped me from blasting out "Selling England by the Pound", though.

I suppose that I hold the Mop Tops as something of a rarified quantity, though. In my own mind, they are above most others in terms of cultural significance, and quantity and consistency of quality.

Beestie 04-25-2006 02:30 PM

talent over angst appeal

Hendrix

And if Hendrix were still alive, I'd wail on him for killing himself.

Undertoad 04-25-2006 02:47 PM

The Experience win

Santana
vs
Yes

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands

glatt 04-25-2006 03:15 PM

Rock Steady 04-25-2006 03:19 PM

Well, you have broad tastes. Good for you. I just can't do it. No Doubt.

capnhowdy 04-25-2006 03:39 PM

yes

W.HI.P 04-25-2006 03:53 PM

yes

Rock Steady 04-25-2006 04:00 PM

Oh, by the way, the search engineer asks...

Did you mean Grateful Dead?

Flint 04-25-2006 04:06 PM

Zep. The End.

Elspode 04-25-2006 04:12 PM

Yes, for a clean sweep.

Undertoad 04-25-2006 04:17 PM

I am losing it. I must have looked at that a hundred times and thought, something's not quite right here...

Undertoad 04-25-2006 04:20 PM

Yes wins, closing out the round.

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands

Since most matches were completed in an hour it seems we have room to expand the format for the elite eight.

The next four matches determine the final four. They will be in a BEST of ELEVEN format. In this format it will take SIX VOTES to WIN the match.

Again, SIX votes to WIN.

Ready --

Pink Floyd
vs
Queen

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands

glatt 04-25-2006 04:27 PM

That's a really hard one. Very different bands, but both are great.

I'm going to go with Pink Floyd.

Elspode 04-25-2006 04:34 PM

Floyd. Sorry, Freddie.

Rock Steady 04-25-2006 04:43 PM

Pink Floyd

smoothmoniker 04-25-2006 04:55 PM

Queen

Clodfobble 04-25-2006 05:47 PM

QUEEN.

(I frickin' hate Pink Floyd.)

capnhowdy 04-25-2006 05:51 PM

Floyd

Ibby 04-25-2006 06:00 PM

how can I decide? I love both too much to betray the other

I SHALL LET ITUNES DEICDE!

...aaaaand iTunes wont work. No wait, there it goes!

Floyd it is.

JayMcGee 04-25-2006 06:09 PM

floyd of course.....

lumberjim 04-25-2006 07:09 PM

Flint 04-25-2006 07:19 PM

Floyd, man, totally. My band does Echoes and Fearless.

JayMcGee 04-25-2006 07:27 PM

bet my CD does echoes better than your band.....

DucksNuts 04-25-2006 07:32 PM

QUEEN

....soo not happy that Santana are gone!

Rock Steady 04-25-2006 07:48 PM

Sorry folks, but this gender-challenged individual hates Queen. No Doubt.

If it weren't for the Beatles, there may not have BEEN progressive rock.

W.HI.P 04-25-2006 08:36 PM

pink floyd

Word. Indeed, members of Yes said they were directly influenced by the Beatles. And I was a Yes groupie.

But, as a teenager in 1972, The Beatles == Britney Spears. ALL commercial stations were ONLY TOP-40. It was horrible.

To me, Prog was post-Beatles Rock. Much more sophisticated. Learn from their ansestors, and brought Rock to the Next Level.

But, what do I know. I'm just a girl. No Doubt.

Undertoad 04-25-2006 10:28 PM

Floyd takes the match.

Grateful Dead
vs
Jimi Hendrix Experience

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands

lumberjim 04-25-2006 10:35 PM

Musically, I think....overallllllll, .....i prefer Jimi. he's just so fucking groovy.

.......but the Dead created a lifestyle.
That's pretty big. I followed them around the country for a substantial amount of my youth.

so,

um......er The Grateful Dead

lumberjim 04-25-2006 10:39 PM

good i dea increasing the vote number. yer smart. SMRT

xoxoxoBruce 04-25-2006 10:40 PM

Dead.

Ibby 04-25-2006 11:25 PM

Sigh. Another hard one.

I'm going to go with the Dead.

Rock Steady 04-26-2006 12:03 AM

Graitful Dead

Rock Steady 04-26-2006 12:11 AM

BTW, I never anticipated a future world where, in a forum rock voting thing, the Top 8 would include Talking Heads, Pink Floyd and Yes. Some how in the last 30 years the world veered off in the right direction. Amazing.

Ibby 04-26-2006 12:49 AM

I still say Rush deserved on there more than Talking Heads. And the fact that Nirvana made it as far as they did disgusts me.

EDIT: My prediction is Floyd vs. Yes in the finals, with Yes winning by a whisker... or Floyd winning by a whisker, I don't reeeeally know. I see Zeppelin vs. Floyd and Yes vs. the Dead in the semifinal, with Yes and Floyd triumphing.

smoothmoniker 04-26-2006 12:56 AM

Hendrix.

Rock Steady 04-26-2006 12:58 AM

Well, I'm bummed out that The Cranberries didn't make the Final Four. But, the matchups were brutal.

Still, where were Blondie, No Doubt and Jefferson Airplane?

I guess they settled for the National Invitation Tournament. ;)

W.HI.P 04-26-2006 12:59 AM

jimi hendrix [all along the watchtower]

Ibby 04-26-2006 01:05 AM

I'm glad No Doubt didn't make it, I'm sorry. But Ziggy/David Bowie and the Spiders should have been on here, as should have the Alan Parsons Project, The Allman Brothers Band, The Boomtown Rats, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, CCR, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Iron Maiden, the Black Crowes, Motley Crue, Mr. Big, Niacin, Primus, The Ramones, Racer X, Ratt, Scorpions, Sex Pistols, Spinal Tap, Steppenwolf, the Stray Cats, Tally Hall, The Temptations, Three Dog Night, Van Halen, Weather Report, Whitesnake, XTC, and ZZ Top.

...heh.

Trilby 04-26-2006 06:23 AM

This is a toughie but I'm going with Hendrix. His version of All Along the Watchtower is powerful, freaky stuff. And he did an ode to bipolar disorder. Cool.

glatt 04-26-2006 07:24 AM

I'm going with the Dead.

But saying one is better than the other is like saying an ice cream cone is better than shrimp.
