Ok. Describe the original/banned artwork for the GnR Appetite for Destruction album. Bonus points if you name the artist.

Ibby 06-26-2006 11:55 AM

Easy, the inner artwork, with the robot and the demon and the chick with the panties around her shins.

jinx 06-26-2006 12:07 PM

Right on, Robot Rape Scene by Robert Williams.

Was the guitar style named after Maybell Carter?

skysidhe 06-26-2006 12:13 PM

The meaning behind 'Led Zeppelin'? The name of the band.

Elspode 06-26-2006 12:26 PM

Isn't it Ibram's turn again?

skysidhe 06-26-2006 12:45 PM

sorry, I didn't read the rules, Passed over the rules or I'm an idiot or all of the above.

please continue:redface:

Elspode 06-26-2006 01:00 PM

I'm sure you aren't an idiot, m'dear. Myself, I'm not so sure about.

skysidhe 06-26-2006 01:11 PM

no , not you kind sir :)

Ibby 06-26-2006 01:30 PM

The guitar style in question is Travis Picking, named after Merle Travis.

Who played guitar in the song China Girl by David Bowie, who co-wrote the song, and why did David Bowie include it on Let's Dance?

Trilby 06-26-2006 01:36 PM

More importantly--how does Ibram know all this obscure stuff?

Elspode 06-26-2006 01:40 PM

Wasn't that Carlos Alomar?

Ibby 06-26-2006 01:42 PM

I know all this stuff 'cause music is my life. And at the moment it's manifesting itself as a Bowie fixation, hence so many bowie/ronson questions. I've got a few others up my sleeve though that ARENT bowie, so yeah.

EDIT: Not Carlos Alomar, no.

Elspode 06-26-2006 01:43 PM

No, Elspode, wrong!

Wikipedia sez Iggy Pop cowrote with Bowie in the 70's, and that it was resurrected and popified for Let's Dance.

I have no idea why it was included, though. Perhaps because Bowie was trying to kick smack at the time?

Carter-style picking can be thought of as a blend of rhythm and lead. It is a technique named after Maybelle Carter of the Carter Family, who popularized this style in the group's recordings in the 1930's. Carter-style is characterized by playing the melody notes on the bass strings and rhythmic fills on the treble strings. This lets the guitar perform as both a lead instrument and rhythm instrument at the same time.
