Can somebody tell me one reason why African hand-drum traditions flourished more outside of the US (during the slavery era)?

mrnoodle 10-06-2006 11:17 AM

cuz slaves weren't allowed to have drums?

Flint 10-06-2006 11:20 AM

Right... no-hand-drumming laws were standard wherever there were African slaves, but were more heavily enforced in the US. That's why we see rich hand-drumming traditions in other former slave states, but in the US the African rhythmic tradition was expressed through other means, such as tap-dancing (yes...tap-dancing), snare drum playing, and later drumset playing. For God's sake somebody ask a good question now...

Which band is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for playing concerts on the most continents in 24 hours?

glatt 10-06-2006 11:36 AM

That's a good one.

I remember Phil Collins flew from London to USA on the Concorde to play in both venues for the Live Aid concert, but I bet the record has more than two continents.
