I think we may have gone too far.

The Romans and their vomitoriums fell, and we shall fall as well. But don't worry, it will only be another few hundred years before the Asians will have their chance to be destroyed by lack of self-control. Then it will be... I dunno, sub-Saharan Africa's turn? I feel like they should get a chance at some point, no reason for us to hoard all the embarrassment for ourselves.

I read not long ago the vomitoriums are a myth, at least the way they were purported used. Don't remember where it was, because I figured it wouldn't stop our decline. ;)

I think vomitoriums were the exits from the stadiums - they vomited out the plebs after the games.

[eta]pretty much:

Quote:

A vomitorium is a passage situated below or behind a tier of seats in an amphitheatre or a stadium, through which big crowds can exit rapidly at the end of a performance. They can also be pathways for actors to enter and leave stage.[1] The Latin word vomitorium, plural vomitoria, derives from the verb vomō, vomere, "to spew forth". In ancient Roman architecture, vomitoria were designed to provide rapid egress for large crowds at amphitheatres and stadiums, as they do in modern sports stadiums and large theatres.[2]

From that Wiki link...

There is a common misconception that ancient Romans designated spaces called vomitoria for the purpose of actual vomiting, as part of a binge and purge cycle
Yeah, that's the gist of what I read. :yesnod:

Clodfobble 10-20-2015 07:13 PM

Well okay, they didn't do it in the vomitoriums specifically, but Straight Dope says that intentional vomiting was definitely socially acceptable.

Plus, I clearly remember a Saturday Night Live skit with Bill Murray ladling out vomit in a vomitorium while chatting someone up and passing out throat tickling feathers.

Yep. That's a keyboard waffle iron. But, you probably don't want one as badly as you think you do.
