"Cleaning", is trying.
"Lifting stains" is succeeding.
"Removing ground-in dirt" is victory!

Clodfobble my science education was a long time ago but aren't transdermal products formulated in low molecular weight versions because big complicated molecules can't get through the skin - like you can put sand through a strainer but not gravel.

or am I talking bollocks again?

It's true that absorption rates of larger molecules is reduced, so some medicines are not considered good candidates to get the right dose in the right amount of time, though all the vitamins have a relatively simpler structure compared to most meds. Absorption rates are also affected by how much is already in your body--swab iodine on the skin of someone who is iodine-deficient, and it will disappear within just a few hours; swab it on someone who gets enough iodine, and the brown stain will remain for 24+ hours.

There are some substances that we believe are too large to ever fit through external skin, such as gluten, for example. However, millions of celiacs have both reported and measured symptoms of internal exposure when they only received an external dose.

It's like the mystery of how bees fly: for decades, aerodynamics experts said it was impossible, their weight plus other factors meant bees couldn't fly. Yet obviously they could. We think larger molecules shouldn't be able to get through some skin areas, but evidence shows many of them do, somehow. I'm sure we'll figure it out someday, just like they finally figured out how bees fly.

Oh woe is me, woe is me.

Fucking internet. Again.

Some of you may recall the nightmare I had with this lastyear. 7 engineer visits in all, and eventually they threw up their hands in defeat and said 'sorry...nothing we can do', gave me discounts for a few months and offered to release me from my contract (not that I was under contract with them at the time but I digress..).

It's been pretty consistently shitty this whole time. I feel lucky if I get a 1/3 meg download speed. Mostly, I get below a quarter meg. And it's constantly discoing to the point that even streaming sites which buffer are a struggle - streaming sites that don't buffer (like ALL the fucking TV catchup sites) are a total no-go.

Last time it was really bad and I had all the engineer visits etc etc, one thing they told me was that it was because I was on the old 'IP Stream' system, and that it was unlikely to get any better until the equipment at the exchange was upgraded.

The other week I got a letter informing me that my provider was installing new, up to date equipment at our exchange and my service would be automatically migrated to that new system on the 24th - Hurrah! I can apparently expect 50% faster speeds and greater stability. In other words a (just about) usable broadband connection.

They said my service would be interrupted, possibly for up to 5 hours.

It went off on Friday afternoon as expected and ......yes, you guessed it, that was the last I saw of my fucking internet connection.

Spent half the frigging weekend calling them. First they said: ahhh, yes, the letter may say 5 hours, but really it can take 24 hours.
Then they said, ahh yes, the migration has finished, but it can take up to 48 hours to reset - monitor the connection, it could come on at any moment,

Then they said: oh....yeah, no, it definitely should be working by now....we'll need tests on the line - phone back in 15 mins.

15 mins later - yeah, we need to do more tests. Can you phone back again in 15 mins, this time using mobile phone (in case further tests needed on landline).

25 minutes on fucking hold, perched uncomfortably in the one part of my house (the landing) with enough mobile reception to make a call - eventually gave up, as by now was 8pm Sunday.

Fuck them.

So - what's the betting when I do eventually get to talk to them again it'll be another engineers visit?

So - for however long this takes, I now have no internet access at all and am having to go into university to work. An extra three days of travel each week.

@DanaC

next email you send them, prominently start it with

cc: BBC Watchdog
cc: OFCOM
cc: News International Consumer Affairs Editor
Mirror Group International Consumer Affairs Editor
Daily Mail & General Trust Consumer Affairs Editor

and if you genuinely cc: them in then so much the better.

Gravdigr 01-27-2014 03:19 PM

Next time you call them, tell them what's wrong, and then before they can give you a line of shit, ask to speak to someone in the customer retention dept.

That might get the ball rolling, plus you might get your bill reduced, a bump in speed, or some other kind of deal.

It works that way over here, sometimes.

xoxoxoBruce 01-27-2014 04:26 PM

That doesn't work in England.

Sundae 01-27-2014 09:05 PM

The only retention we got here is water retention.

Sorry for your woes, Dana.
I hate it when the response is basically, "That's not what it says on my screen."
Because even with a really decent person on the other end of the line you know that you are now a Special Case and nothing they can do will help. I get it so often because I exhaust all other possibilities before making the call. As you have also done.

I bet the extra fares are playing havoc with your tight budget too.
Nightmare.

Molasar 01-28-2014 07:37 AM

not being funny but switch to plusnet.
uk service centre and when i had grief they were very old-fashioned, as in
the listened
they had solutions
they spoke in human language not the tecchiespeak used by all other ISPs that is designed to confuse you with bollocks -and to bolster their own lack of self esteem and make up for the fact that they have fuckall ability.
each person owned the problem until it was fixed.
and it was fixed.

then they asked me a couple of times later if all was OK
