this is WAY too cool!! some people were flying their model P-51 mustang which they accidentally crashed into the tree tops. A helicopter training flight (Robinson R-22) saw it happen and retrieved the P-51 for the folks....way cool!

warning: language, otherwise sfw.

glatt 11-01-2012 07:56 AM

That was wonderful!

Lamplighter 11-01-2012 09:07 AM

... a fun video !

See what can happen when you turn disaster-planning over to private enterprise.

:D

xoxoxoBruce 11-01-2012 12:17 PM

Their friends will never believe them.

I swear, these two guys in a helicopter rescued my model from a tree top.

Yeah right, have another beer... you sure it wasn't Superman?

Gravdigr 11-01-2012 03:25 PM

That's a couple of cool guys right there.

Yeah we made it...but my town (Tuckerton) is ravaged. Along with every other coastal town. Sandy was one evil witch!

Here is a view from Sunday night high tide in Tuckerton

Gotta love TED:

plthijinx 11-05-2012 06:11 PM

Here is link to the story.

who was at fault? both actually. the driver of the SUV for not stopping and looking both ways and the pilot for coming in too low. it's arguable about his low approach. i fly a low approach quite often. but never when there is a road on the approach end of the runway. i'll make sure i have at least a 50' clearance if so and land a tad long.

BigV 11-05-2012 06:26 PM

I'm not a lawyer. But that looks like 100% pilot error from here. Maaaaybe there's a traffic signal on the road saying, planes have the right of way, but I've never seen one. The car's on the road, where cars belong. The plane's in the air, but where cars go. If the car had been on the runway, different story. Doesn't look like that from here though. I like the dialog "you pulled out in front of a plane!" wtf? A plane? I remember being trained to look for the kid chasing the ball from between parked cars but not being attacked from the sky.

It looks like everybody's probably ok, I sure hope so.

plthijinx 11-05-2012 06:40 PM

Yeah everyone was ok for the most part. Driver of the SUV got a couple staples in his head.

I can see your point of view on this but anytime a road passes in front of a runway threshhold the plane has the right of way. Driver, in this case, is an avid visitor of the airport there and should have known to look both ways before crossing the approach path. Meh, i still say they were both at fault.

I will pull out the FAR's and have a look...(faa regs)

bigw00dy 11-05-2012 07:05 PM

BigV 11-05-2012 08:34 PM

Oh. My. God. (happy tears, of course)

plthijinx 11-05-2012 09:03 PM

Yeah V i totally agree with ya there...pretty cool breakthrough! Reminds me of the movie Awakenings with DeNiro and Williams using L-dopa to wake up the patients. (Illness escapes me now, on phone and too tired to look it up)

Oh, i did find an advisory circular from the FAA but it had to do with vehicles operating on the airport for the airport. Any rate...it did say all planes have the right of way unless otherwise specified by air traffic control (with operations at a towered airport)

It's a private road but there's a stop sign(painted on pavement) on both sides of the runway.

BigV 11-05-2012 10:18 PM

I agree that the vehicle is much better equipped to stop than the airplane is. And regardless of the "right of way", no one wants a collision, this wasn't some air to ground game of chicken. If the kid jumped out from between cars, I'd fucking dynamite the brakes--despite the fact that I have the right of way (assuming I did have the right of way). Not only am I not a lawyer, I am no pilot either (though I do have a new honorific, TBA) but that just looked like he came in too low. I just don't know that I'd be thinking, "Ooooh, better watch out for airplanes."

xoxoxoBruce 11-05-2012 10:23 PM

I think the car was most at fault but I don't know what the legalities are about stop signs on private roads, especially when it's painted on the road instead of the normal octagon. I found out in PA the cops can ticket you for blowing a stop sign in a mall parking lot.

Huh. You mean like at approximately the spot on the road where the suv appears to be in the still of the vid? Like, kind of in line with the windsock? That might change my mind some. I'll change my position to shared fault. OF COURSE the driver didn't think, ooooo, I'll just beat the plane. He just didn't see the plane, probably because he didn't look for the plane.

I was thinking for myself that I wouldn't see the plane because I wouldn't look for the plane because I've been driving a LONG time and I just never look out for planes. God knows how many close calls I've had!!

xoxoxoBruce 11-05-2012 10:40 PM

He did kind of a rolling stop, probably glancing to his right to see if there was a plane taking off.

Small point of order, you wouldn't have the right of way. By definition, pedestrians always have the right of way, even if they're jaywalking.

Actually, now that I think about it, I can only say for certainty that this is true in Texas. But I bet it's true everywhere. You can't have a law that even implies it might be okay to hit someone in certain circumstances. Better to make it always illegal, and then use legal discretion to not bring charges against the driver when it was clearly unavoidable.

A timelapse ode to clouds and their atmospheric beauty. Sit back, relax and watch the sky move.

As a paraglider pilot I've spent plenty of time with clouds and learning about them; observing them grow and decay, watching them being lit in various stunning colours throughout the day and also flying near and in them (cumulus in particular). For more on clouds, take a trip to cloudappreciationsociety.org

Shot in South Australia during 2010 around Adelaide, Mt Lofty Ranges, Fleurieu Peninsula, Mid North and Flinders Ranges. Over 8800 photos constructed the master timelapse sequences that made the cut but I shot around 30,000 throughout the year collecting sequences.

BigV 12-13-2012 10:36 PM

wow, that was very beautiful, thank you ZenGum.

This just really made me smile
Because they are so obviously having a blast, and the singer has such a beautiful voice.

So of course I had to look up a translation. Which cracked me up even more - the bit about having a poo especially.

Note: this is a rough translation, and since the Korean language does tend to leave the subject out from sentences, the choice between you and I is approximate.

When the round sun rises the first
thing I do is to think happy thoughts...
One, two, three get up from the bed
give a great big yawn like a hippo...
Open both eyes nice and big
stretch out ...
Enjoy the happy imaginations
Don't forget happy happy things.

(short interlude)

In the morning with a refreshing breeze
when I'm chilling out...
When I look even better than usual
and everyhing I put on seems to be even prettier
When I walk listening to your favorite music
when I get to the bus on time...
When the rush hour is especially bad
but the guy in front of me gets up
When everything works out as expected
from now I set my own expectations
When I eat something very tasty
Oh my! Didn't even push but easy trip to the bathroom (LOL "easy trip to the bathroom" is two syllables in Korean)
Oh! When I leave on bonus vacation
Along with him, my love...
Just imagining this makes me feel so happy
Don't forget! Happy happy things.

(interlude)

When I see my friends for the first time in a while
When I just feel so good and I dance! my! ass! off!
When my brain just seems to work well
You don't say! I didn't even study but got a hun-dred
Oh! When you miss that someone
When you understand my feelings
Just imagining this will make you happy
Happy, happy things-

Something that anyone can do
if you want a happy life
Just imagining this will make you happy
Don't forget! Happy happy things.
Knockout.

I showed my son the Dumb Ways to Die video when it was first posted here, and he's got all the boys in his 5th grade singing it now. It's the ear worm of the moment with his group of friends.

BigV 01-09-2013 10:08 AM

Thanks Clodfobble. I enjoyed that the first couple times I heard it on the radio, and seeing the young man enjoy telling it made it even better. I like the big hug from the host at the end.

Twil: "A magic trick? Ok."

V: "I'll need a volunteer from the audience."

Twil: (raises hand)

V: "You there, pretty young lady in the front, come on up here girls."

V: (with my straightest possible face) "Wait, that didn't work out right, let me try that one again."

Twil: (laughing) "Riiiiiight."
