Thanks!

Happy Monkey 12-19-2010 11:10 AM

Well, I didn't win. But here are my entries in a much easier to find location:

HM, your work is dazzling as always. Thanks for sharing it.

I see you work in very regular triangles, have you ever considered something that isn't an enclosed (roughly spherical) piece? I think the math geek in your would be able to produce some lovely flower shapes based on the Fibonacci series, like perhaps a sunflower seed head.

Happy Monkey 12-19-2010 04:38 PM

Thanks!

I am working on something that isn't spherical or fully enclosed, but it is regular.

Unfortunately, my chosen medium is somewhat limited. Natural shapes (sunflowers, snails) work because the size of the components get progressively smaller as you go in, and I've only got a few sizes of tape. And tape only folds cleanly into certain regular shapes.

I've made a few freeform objects, but they haven't really inspired me.

BigV 12-19-2010 07:28 PM

You're welcome.

I can imagine triangles, squares, pentagons. From this set, many others can be assembled. Do you work strictly with only one width of tape per project?

Happy Monkey 12-19-2010 11:54 PM

Pretty much, otherwise the edges don't match.

This makes me think that, now since you have the technology to light up your sculptures, you need to make a string of christmas lights with these. Blinky ones would be so awesome. You could sell them, and give 10% to charity (aka The Cellar). I'll be the first to put my order in for 3 strings, on the house of course since this was my idea ... :)

Unfortunately, LabRat is gone, but many years later, I finally made a string of them (the whilte ones are the new ones).

Serendipity carries the day... that's a nice display

glatt 12-26-2010 08:21 PM

Most excellent!

kerosene 12-27-2010 01:03 PM

I love them!

Happy Monkey 01-22-2011 07:57 AM

My plan for this year's Off the Roll contest. I haven't entered yet, as I'm still figuring out how to photograph it.

Your plans look even more complicated than the final product.

Lamplighter 01-22-2011 09:40 AM

Where's the directions ?

Happy Monkey 01-22-2011 10:14 AM

See that blue fuzzball at the top? Each intersection is made of six isosceles right triangles, as shown (you can zoom in through flickr). The double-lined edges meet their opposing member on the other side. What more direction could you possibly need?

Griff 01-22-2011 10:50 AM

Your ways frighten and confuse me.

Lamplighter 01-22-2011 11:14 AM

I realize you are working with folding tape, but still, you and Eric Demaine must have some genes in common ;)

I came across the web pages with his " Waves-in-Glass" back when you posted your X-mas ornaments.
If these links to his Cut-and-Fold web page is broken, you can still get there by Google

My brain doesn't begin to go in those directions, so I envy your creativity, and look forward to seeing your "ball of blue fuzz" in 3-dimensions

Happy Monkey 01-22-2011 01:21 PM

Those are cool.

Happy Monkey 01-22-2011 10:25 PM

I used 13½ rolls of packing tape.

Happy Monkey 02-05-2011 03:08 PM

I've entered! I'll pass on the link to my entry when it's approved. Meanwhile, here's a video preview.

wolf 02-05-2011 03:52 PM

That is beautiful.

monster 02-05-2011 07:33 PM

Fantastic! What are it's dimensions?

Happy Monkey 02-05-2011 10:31 PM

Thanks!
It's about 40 inches in diameter.

monster 02-06-2011 11:03 AM

that's got to win.

(the alien apostrophe in my last post is bugging me.....)

glatt 02-06-2011 11:28 AM

It's really impressive! It certainly deserves to win. It's huge and interesting.

Happy Monkey 02-07-2011 07:47 AM

Thanks!

Voting is now open!

monster 02-07-2011 07:54 AM

Yay! I got the first vote in!

Happy Monkey 02-09-2011 07:03 AM

I've broken the 100 mark, and almost in the top five. :)

glatt 02-09-2011 07:27 AM

Excellent. Can I vote for yours on multiple days? I thought it said you could only vote for one once. But maybe I misunderstood and that's once per day.

Happy Monkey 02-09-2011 09:08 AM

Once per email address. The voting rules are odd; once per sculpture, but 10 sculptures per day. It's like they were expecting hundreds and hundreds of entries.

Shawnee123 02-09-2011 09:20 AM

Once per sculpture but 10 sculptures per email, do you mean???

Anyway, I voted. I can vote under different emails though, if that'll work.

Happy Monkey 02-09-2011 10:39 AM

Once per sculpture per email total, but ten sculptures per email address per day. So you could vote for every entry over the course of three days (there are about thirty entries as of now), and then not be able to vote at all.

Happy Monkey 02-16-2011 09:35 AM

I've broken 200 votes, and am in fourth place.

glatt 02-16-2011 10:01 AM

Sweet! I'd vote more if I could.

Happy Monkey 02-19-2011 06:18 PM

Happy Monkey 02-26-2011 07:47 AM

With a couple of days to go, I am over 350 votes, but have dropped to seventh place.

Happy Monkey 03-04-2011 10:22 AM

Final tally, 8th place with 360 votes. Results in late March/early April.

glatt 03-04-2011 10:29 AM

8th place will at least get you into the judges' consideration. It's up to them now, right? You could still win if they choose you?

Happy Monkey 03-04-2011 03:05 PM

Yes. The voting is only a small part of the judging criteria. I think I have a good chance of getting a prize (out of one $5000 and three $500 prizes).

glatt 03-04-2011 03:21 PM

Well, you're on their radar. Good luck!

monster 03-04-2011 05:13 PM

Good luck. I honestly think yours is the best entry.

Happy Monkey 03-05-2011 01:12 PM

Thanks! Fingers crossed.

Happy Monkey 04-14-2011 01:23 PM

I won first prize!

One of them, at least.

$500 won't make a great hourly wage, but I'm not in it for the money.

glatt 04-14-2011 01:26 PM

Congratulations!

infinite monkey 04-14-2011 01:41 PM

That is awesome! :celebrat:

Congratulations! :)

monster 04-14-2011 04:21 PM

Most Freaking Excellent :D Well done.

BigV 04-14-2011 04:23 PM

Outstanding!!!

Congratulations Happy Monkey!

jimhelm 04-14-2011 04:58 PM

wow, cool! nice work!

Happy Monkey 04-14-2011 06:25 PM

Thanks!

jimhelm 04-14-2011 06:27 PM

I still refuse to believe that you don't :joint: while you're making those things....

Well done!

glatt 02-12-2012 01:28 PM

I especially like that first one.

Happy Monkey 02-12-2012 05:24 PM

Yeah, me too. It's funny, all the time I was working on it, I didn't notice that angle, and then when it was on the tree, I could only see it as a snowflake.

Happy Monkey 03-25-2012 04:41 PM

I've entered the 2012 Off the Roll contest. Voting opens April 19th. They've altered the voting rules this time, so early entries don't get a head start.

So get your voting fingers ready.

BigV 03-25-2012 05:33 PM

Break a leg!

wolf 03-25-2012 06:31 PM

That is completely awesome! Voting finger ready to fire and dip in the purple ink!

Happy Monkey 04-19-2012 01:49 PM

Voting fingers are off the hook; I didn't make the final five. Maybe they don't go for abstract, or maybe they don't want to go for last year's winners.

Oh, well. Time to start thinking about how and where to hang this one, and then start thinking about next year.

glatt 04-19-2012 01:55 PM

Aw crap. I missed this when I was on vacation. I didn't vote at all. sorry!
