Thanks!
Well, I didn't win. But here are my entries in a much easier to find location:

HM, your work is dazzling as always. Thanks for sharing it.
I see you work in very regular triangles, have you ever considered something that isn't an enclosed (roughly spherical) piece? I think the math geek in your would be able to produce some lovely flower shapes based on the Fibonacci series, like perhaps a sunflower seed head. |
Thanks!
I am working on something that isn't spherical or fully enclosed, but it is regular. Unfortunately, my chosen medium is somewhat limited. Natural shapes (sunflowers, snails) work because the size of the components get progressively smaller as you go in, and I've only got a few sizes of tape. And tape only folds cleanly into certain regular shapes. I've made a few freeform objects, but they haven't really inspired me. |
You're welcome.
I can imagine triangles, squares, pentagons. From this set, many others can be assembled. Do you work strictly with only one width of tape per project? |
Pretty much, otherwise the edges don't match.

Serendipity carries the day... that's a nice display
Most excellent!
I love them!
My plan for this year's Off the Roll contest. I haven't entered yet, as I'm still figuring out how to photograph it.

Where's the directions ?
See that blue fuzzball at the top? Each intersection is made of six isosceles right triangles, as shown (you can zoom in through flickr). The double-lined edges meet their opposing member on the other side. What more direction could you possibly need?
Your ways frighten and confuse me.
I realize you are working with folding tape, but still, you and Eric Demaine must have some genes in common ;)
I came across the web pages with his " Waves-in-Glass" back when you posted your X-mas ornaments. If these links to his Cut-and-Fold web page is broken, you can still get there by Google My brain doesn't begin to go in those directions, so I envy your creativity, and look forward to seeing your "ball of blue fuzz" in 3-dimensions |
Those are cool.
I've entered! I'll pass on the link to my entry when it's approved. Meanwhile, here's a video preview.
That is beautiful.
Fantastic! What are it's dimensions?
Thanks!
It's about 40 inches in diameter. |
that's got to win.
(the alien apostrophe in my last post is bugging me.....) |
It's really impressive! It certainly deserves to win. It's huge and interesting.

Yay! I got the first vote in!
I've broken the 100 mark, and almost in the top five. :)
Excellent. Can I vote for yours on multiple days? I thought it said you could only vote for one once. But maybe I misunderstood and that's once per day.
Once per email address. The voting rules are odd; once per sculpture, but 10 sculptures per day. It's like they were expecting hundreds and hundreds of entries.
Once per sculpture but 10 sculptures per email, do you mean???
Anyway, I voted. I can vote under different emails though, if that'll work. |
Once per sculpture per email total, but ten sculptures per email address per day. So you could vote for every entry over the course of three days (there are about thirty entries as of now), and then not be able to vote at all.
I've broken 200 votes, and am in fourth place.
Sweet! I'd vote more if I could.
With a couple of days to go, I am over 350 votes, but have dropped to seventh place.
Final tally, 8th place with 360 votes. Results in late March/early April.
8th place will at least get you into the judges' consideration. It's up to them now, right? You could still win if they choose you?
Yes. The voting is only a small part of the judging criteria. I think I have a good chance of getting a prize (out of one $5000 and three $500 prizes).
Well, you're on their radar. Good luck!
Good luck. I honestly think yours is the best entry.
Thanks! Fingers crossed.
I won first prize!
One of them, at least. $500 won't make a great hourly wage, but I'm not in it for the money. |
Congratulations!
That is awesome! :celebrat:
Congratulations! :) |
Most Freaking Excellent :D Well done.
Outstanding!!!
Congratulations Happy Monkey! |
wow, cool! nice work!
Thanks!
I still refuse to believe that you don't :joint: while you're making those things....
I :f201:.
That's the flag for Tuvalu. Owner of the .tv domain. I watch TV. |
Well done!
I especially like that first one.
Yeah, me too. It's funny, all the time I was working on it, I didn't notice that angle, and then when it was on the tree, I could only see it as a snowflake.
I've entered the 2012 Off the Roll contest. Voting opens April 19th. They've altered the voting rules this time, so early entries don't get a head start.
So get your voting fingers ready. |
Break a leg!
That is completely awesome! Voting finger ready to fire and dip in the purple ink!
Voting fingers are off the hook; I didn't make the final five. Maybe they don't go for abstract, or maybe they don't want to go for last year's winners.
Oh, well. Time to start thinking about how and where to hang this one, and then start thinking about next year. |
Aw crap. I missed this when I was on vacation. I didn't vote at all. sorry!
