Good show.
I've been watching Iron Fist. Still good, but not quite as impressive so far as the rest of Netflix's Marvel shows. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was pretty funny. |
New season of Archer has been good too. I like the longer plot arcs.
|
Big Little Lies
The season finale is tonight on HBO. It's not pleasant to watch. The writing is as good as I have ever seen on television. Excruciatingly real, the tension is breathtaking. I don't like it but Twil and I are *transfixed*. If you watch it and you don't like it, I'll give you your money back. |
finished up Letterkenny. The inch says Trial and Error is good. "Like Parks and Rec, but in a courtroom."
Any notes on that? |

The editing of the trailer destroys the perfect comic timing that is one of the great things about the show. The trailer makes it seem hyper. |

Louis C.K. 2017. This was brilliant, Carlin level society dissection.

Just started Big Little Lies. I was reluctant, even though everyone said it was so good... but it really is SO good.

_________________________________ Finally started "Luke Cage". One episode in, I'm not sure I'm gonna like it. Does it get better? I have the feeling it was just a slow build up, but, I just don't know. I kinda like how the first episode ended. Luke, having just stopped a bullet in his hand and stomped a couple of thugs, saying, to the fourth (?) thug: "You want some?" 4th thug, who, along with Luke, and the other thugs, is a black gentleman (and I'm just quoting): "Man, I don't even like these niggas.", and leaves. :lol2: |
Hasan Minhaj's new standup special is fan-fucking-tastic. Highly, highly, highly recommend.
Dear White People is pretty good, a little stereotypical but at least they cover all the stereotypes. Silicon Valley is still ballin'. Westworld is okay, beautiful but we've seen every plot twist coming a mile away. The Expanse is okay, less aesthetic than Westworld but with better political and character intrigue. Animals is surprisingly engaging. Has the look of a raunchy adult cartoon and yet is weirdly heartfelt. Neil Patrick Harris' A Series of Unfortunate Events is awesome. One of the few shows my kids like that I also like. Oh, and Mr. Clod had me sit through one episode of Riverdale with him. That show is dead to me. |
Danger 5. Season one was the perfect send up of 60s era spy shows. Season 2, I like a bit less. It takes place in the 80s and is also a perfect re-creation of the 80s shows like Miami Vice. I think part of the reason I dislike it it is that it is the 80s to a T. Too much coke, sexual violence and objectification of women at an all time high, heavy keyboard synth, and an atrocious color palette. In other words, they nailed the 80s.
I'm up to season 2 of Archer. It's hilarious. I now have a thing for black chicks, I never did before. |
Rick and Morty was excellent.
I've been enjoying the new season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I love the robots taking everyone's jobs. |
I watched the first episode of Handmaid's Tale last night very good transition from the page... this gonna be some dark shit.

Louis CK's 2017 receives the full endorsement of Grav's Balls™.

Watched War Machine, a Netflix original starring Brad Pitt last night. An account of General Glen McMahon's tour in Afghanistan.
Worthy. |
ALSO watched on Netflix, Skip Trace, a Jackie Chan movie (#guiltypleasure) with Johnny Knoxville. Mr Knoxville has always irritated me as an actor since his performance in Men In Black. Nothing personal, or professional, I just disliked his character in that movie and that kind of stuck with me as I watched his other performances. He's redeemed himself in this movie.
Jackie Chan is aging well. His acrobatic talent is undiminished though we don't see any bare-torso inverted situps in this one. He's often had a ... thread of travelogue in his movies, showing the specific details of a location and this movie is a perfect vehicle for this as he travels from Siberia through Mongolia to Hong Kong. I won't spoil it for you, but the scene with the Mongolian horse nomads is a delightful blend of documentary and comedy. Knoxville's character asks him at one point "Are you Wikipedia all the time?" HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! |
Watched Memento with the kids on Sunday night. It mesmerized them, but having seen it before, I was noticing little irritants in the story. Things that made the movie work well, but that didn't seem so realistic when you piece the story back together into its correct order and think about character motivation based on what they knew at the time.
Now I need to find a fan produced version of the movie where they re-edit it back into the correct order. Such an animal has to exist on You-Tube. It would be super easy to make. And would probably be fairly short, compared to the run-time of the actual movie. |
Or you could make one.;)
You could use that snazzy, new band saw. Are we gonna paint/stain that saw, btw? |
I vote for seafoam green, very industrial.

I've been rewatching Series 8 and 9 of Doctor Who (as well watching the current series 10) - I have reassessed series 8 and enjoyed it much more in the light of what came next than I did at the time.
But that's by the by and for the Doctor thread - Since Capaldi obsession has hit I decided to go rewatch The Thick of It. It stands up very well. I do think it's probably the best political satire in several decades. It feels as relevant to today's political scene as yesterday's. |
Half a dozen or so episodes into Luke Cage. It's ok, but, I can't seem to get into it. It seems to fall flat just when you think 'Oh, this is about to get awesome!' But, then it doesn't.

I watched You before Me on Amazon last night. stayed up way past when I should. Schmaltzy but I needed an excuse to shed a few TBH. Life is a bit shit now.

oh sorry, I didn't mean to bring everyone down. but seeing as I have... apart from the ongoing health crap, one of Goalieboy's high school hockey teammates -who has also played on teams with Thunderboy- committed Suicide on Memorial Day Weekend. By jumping off an overpass near the school. The day I was at the ER dealing with my teen with depression. It's been tough. But we go on. And up. Because why not, right? Adapt and survive.
Tonight I hope to watch the inside of my eyelids for longer than 4 hours, so maybe I need to search Amazon for the dullest movie EVER! ;) |
We had a suicide in our area recently as well. I had to make some calls on a client who brought it up and my nephew spent a few days keeping an eye on his friend's little brother who was close to the dead kid. So far it hasn't turned into a rash of attempts, but teens make you nervous.

I failed with the dull movie and started Roadhouse. Ooops, (on Youtube, super-shitty quality but I don't care). Banana Lady arrives tomorrow. I took a break to vac the stairs and I really should go to bed...... But.... Roadhouse!
Well, is she? |

I'm still watching Handmaid's Tale. I'm not a binge watcher apparently. This show is very good and very disturbing. |
did you read the book?
|
Everyone is too noisy. Y'all have to be quiet while Judge Judy is on. I watch her from 3-4 on ch.3.2 then from 4-5 on ch. 3.1.
I also cook during the commercials. Today is a small chuck roast for three with taters, pole beans, crushed clove of garlic, celery seed, parsley, Cajun seasoning, fake salt and real pepper. My wife will say, what no rice? |
Forgot the white onions.

stumbled upon I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore by Netflix - really awesome mixture of comedy, detective and i don't knoe what else. Everything! Enjoyed it immensely, and I really like Elijah Wood, I have to admit
|
Judge Judy - yeah, no.
You can do your job, any job, without being a complete and total goddamn bitch. I literally would not throw water on her if she was on fire, I would watch her burn. Not too many people bring that out in me. |
And I will feel that way until she brings me a Kawasaki Versys 650.

It was Ok, I made it to the end and -in my dotage- I've learned to quit. sometimes. ;) ...I returned two library books part-read this week!!!!! ...and I could have renewed them. Go me. |
You're far from dotage, just exhausted. :crone:

Both GLOW and The People vs. OJ Simpson have been excellent.

American Gods.
Wow. Awesome show. |

Yah, American Gods is neat. I love Ian McShane tho, I'd happily watch anything with him in it.

The best thing I have seen on Netflix in a while was VALLEY UPRISING. A documentary about climbing culture in Yosemite Valley over the last few decades. Extremely well done and entertaining.
I just started watching it for a minute and an hour later realizing it was bed time. Came back to finish it the next day. |
NetFlix has been Death Valley for me lately. Can't find anything I want to watch. Started Jessica Jones the other night, only to have Luke Cage show up and start boning the hell out of Jessica Jones just as Momdigr walked into the room, so, can't watch that unless she's not home.
|
I'm re-watching Justified, one more season to go. I just adore Timothy Olyphant, so I will re-do Deadwood next. I enjoyed the Santa Clarita Diet because of him.
|
I'd like to try Justified, but, NetFlix tells me it's unavailable for streaming.

Vikings!!!
Awesome. I have to grit my teeth a little every time they show the English - that aspect is fucking ridiculous - seriously, the Kingdom of Northumbria, and they've got posh southern accents and demeanor - their soldiers wear uniforms and have an 'officer class' who stay at the back while the men fight - so much wrongness. The saxons would have been much more like the Vikings in many ways - no uniforms, and the housecarls of the king would have been full on warriors, leading from the front, not standing back and strategising like a modern general. At this stage saxon kings were still ring-givers - very similar culturally to what we see of the vikings when they are in the company of the Earl. Game of Thrones is a more realistic depiction of Northern England, and that's complete fantasy. Anyhoo --- that nonsense aside, it is a fantastic show.Loving Ragnar - also really love Loki. And the only English character so far who has anything about him, Athelstan - is great. |
