TheMercenary 03-05-2011 09:15 AM

I bought $250 worth of beer, wine, and alkehol for the Referees Party in a weeks time.

Griff 03-05-2011 09:17 AM

So the referees really are blind... drunk at least.

TheMercenary 03-05-2011 09:54 AM

Well at least the day before the tourny many of them may be. Actually the Ref accessors who come to town, about 10 or so this year, drink a hell of a lot more than the actual refs. I bet there are about 1/3 who drink moderately, 1/3 who drink occasionally, and then 1/3 who don't drink at all. And of course there are the one or two who push the limit, but they are rare in this group. Everyone takes it pretty seriously. The Beer is mostly Guinness and Bass which is not cheap.

The blind part is probably more true. :D

This one was a pain to wrap, by the way.

How's he going to get it back home?

kerosene 03-05-2011 05:15 PM

Pico, what I meant was, the son in the picture was not the son receiving the keyboard. I took a big risk in involving the pictured son in the acquisition, because the kid cannot keep a secret, even for the 2 hours between wrapping and unwrapping. Within 10 minutes of seeing other son, pictured son asked unpictured son if he liked music.

HLJ, he isn't taking it to his mom's house. He will be back here in 2 months for the summer. It's an "at Dad's house" item. We do that because items that go to their mom's house end up mysteriously disappearing, being sold on Ebay, broken or just boxed up and stored.

Clodfobble 03-05-2011 05:21 PM

I know you meant nothing by it, HLJ, but for future reference, you should be careful when talking to a joint-custodial parent about where "home" is. It has the potential to offend.

No offense taken, Clod (and HLJ.) The only time that phrasing really bothers me anymore is when people say it that way to them. I don't want them to feel that they are just visiting here. I want them to understand that this place is also home.

zippyt 03-05-2011 05:47 PM

Its Tough having to have 2 sets of toys and stuff for kids in this kind of situation ( been there done that ) ,
take the Hi Ground , Dont talk trash about Psyco Mom in front of the kids , they will figure it out for them self's

Yeah, having two sets is weird, and clothes we just can't do. Usually we end up just adding to the clothes repertoire and hoping they get a chance to wear them after the summer, too. Kids grow out of them fast, anyway.

We try to suppress the urge to trash talk. Pretty successful at it. They have begun to figure it out. Not old enough to make "the choice" if they want to, but I wonder what the next couple of years will bring.

skysidhe 03-08-2011 12:32 AM

I bought a small bird feeder to replace the one I made. Then when they stick up their little beaks at that one too, I'll buy them a primo- mesh awesome bird feeder.

kerosene 03-08-2011 02:28 PM

Bought some shoes for not pictured child and shoes for me. Bought groceries, too.

footfootfoot 03-09-2011 08:28 PM

got more groceries again. I love grocery shopping.

Today, I need to buy an orange bedsheet, two orange t-shirts, toothbrush heads, teethbrushi and dental floss. no genital floss.

DanaC 03-11-2011 09:33 AM

I just bought my first dslr camera!

The little casio pocket camera was ok but it really wasn't up to the job of large-scale archival study. Kept overheating, and wasn't stable enough in the archive's tripods which meant I had to hold the camera over the books: bit of a pain in the neck when taking 400+ shots.

I've gone for a pretty basic starter camera, no need for all the bells and whistles. Though I did also get a set of filters in case I need to go in close for smaller writing. It's had mixed reviews, but I feel safe with Canon, so have gone for a Canon EOS 1000D

Haven't bought it yet ... but it looks like I'm buying Cylinder #1 (of six).

Tuesday, car was fine.

Wednesday, noticed a wee bit of hesitation occasionally while driving. I'm pretty sensitive to changes in the engine noises.

Thursday, riding really rough, nearly wanting to stall out at idle, problems spinning up the RPMs, ran mostly okay while puttering along.

Then the idiot light came on. The one that's a little picture of the engine, in yellow.

While driving grab owner's manual out of center console, hold it against steering wheel, page through to find ... on steady indicates fault, usually in emissions control system, or possibly means gas cap is loose.

Pull over and check in pouring rain.

Gas cap wasn't loose.

Light stayed on.

Drove onward.

Idiot light starts flashing.

Manual against the steering wheel again, notice second sentence for first time ... if light is flashing indicates more serious problem, could result in fire.

FIRE??

mother fuck.

stopped flashing.

Had very nervous ride to work (not from home, of course, I was about 20 miles away, with lots of turns and traffic lights between here and there. Sat at lights in park revving engine over 1K RPMs to prevent stall.

Limped it home, and then into the mechanic today.

Diagnosis took about 1/2 hour (there wasn't anyone ahead of me), and when the guy came in with the estimate he chatted with me a little about my Kindle ... and I said, "okay, you've distracted me a little and calmed me down ... go for it."

After he was finished his explanation, I replied, "did you just say it will be under $1000? May I hug you?"

There's this mysterious bright orb in the sky. Things are, well...it's like some kind of light is making things brigher, easier to see, less melancholy.

I have some vague recollection of this phenomenon.

Glinda 03-12-2011 02:29 PM

Today, I bought the much-appreciated help of a few friends (and relatives of friends) to drag away a bunch of trees and brush I've been whacking back this past week.

Twenty dollars cash to each participant - $80

Awesome homemade chili - $8

A little something to drink and smoke - $40

My enthusiastic thanks and a hearty handshake - $0

The fact that I'm not out there in the rain and the mud; they are - PRICELESS!

Trilby 03-12-2011 04:54 PM

A salad. At bob evans. I ate it in the presence of sausage patties, breaded mushrooms and fried cheese.

But I had the salad.

A house!

Hubby's dad co-signed, and we signed off on subjects last week. Posession Sept 15, move in sept 24.
Never expected it to happen, and when it did... it was fast- from thinking about it, to signing off on subjects was 2 weeks!

Griff 08-22-2011 04:47 PM

Good timing!

monster 08-22-2011 05:05 PM

I bought bras, a house number plate and some letter stickers, vaccum cleaner belts, tampons, mouthwash, lens solution, moisturizer, diet coke, a padlock, D batteries and chips.

Last Friday I bought a used hydraulic forging press. It should be here on Friday. They will load it into my truck at the freight terminal. I'm excited and terrified that I have to rent a forklift to get it out of the truck and into my garage....

Clodfobble 08-22-2011 06:22 PM

Today I bought digestive enzymes, 3 new CDs for myself, a new immersion blender, and a real watch for Minifob.

Does that make it a fob watch?

Sundae 08-23-2011 08:55 AM

Nothing.
Yesterday I bought a HUGE baking potato (big enough for Mum, Dad and me), a red onion and a tin of chopped tomatoes. That was for baked sardines with layered potato and onions.

Today I am marinating salmon with ingredients already purchased (and used often).
Mum bought the salmon, but it was a freezer pack, so bought weeks ago.
It's a bit of a cheat, but I feel good about not spending anything anyway.

grynch 08-23-2011 08:57 AM

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh baked sardines...."dreaming of Greece"

Sundae 08-23-2011 09:15 AM

They were really yummy!

Mum is happy to buy the protein if I supply the sides, and more importantly cook them :)
She's come round to the idea that although I cook differently, she actually enjoys what I make, or at least employs constructive criticism, which I can take without rancour.. (usually)

Happiness all round.

Salmon with ginger, spring onion and soy sauce tonight.
Oops, perhaps this should be in the recipe thread!

glatt 08-24-2011 08:50 PM

7 yards of elastic cord,

and then 30 minutes later I did it again.

monster 08-24-2011 08:59 PM
