hinthint: the original cover contained controversial subject matter.

Spexxvet 07-14-2006 12:15 PM

"the white album" - The Beatles

Ibby 07-14-2006 12:21 PM

But that wasnt eponymous, was it?

Spexxvet 07-14-2006 01:16 PM

It wasn't really named The White Album

barefoot serpent 07-14-2006 01:51 PM

the White Album cover was embossed "The Beatles"

hinthinthint: the bands ONLY album released in 1969

Elspode 07-14-2006 01:51 PM

Still my favorite Beatles album, that.

barefoot serpent 07-14-2006 05:14 PM

OK, time's up, the answer-----> a bit NSFW:Blind Faith
Clapton, Baker, Grech, and Winwood

New question: what other album cover featured a photo several nude females for the UK release but was different for US release?

Ibby 07-14-2006 05:42 PM

That pink floyd album that had Piper and the other one, i forget what the other one was?

barefoot serpent 07-14-2006 06:05 PM

Nope, hint: the artists only #1 (US) release.

I never knew there was any other cover besides that one. At least, that's the one I've always had, both on vinyl and CD.

Spexxvet 07-14-2006 06:38 PM

Roxxy Music - don't know the name

be-bop 07-14-2006 07:02 PM

barefoot serpent 07-17-2006 09:17 AM

mmmmm......

which member of a famous 70's group wrote a 60's hit for The Yardbirds, and what was it/

Undertoad 07-18-2006 07:36 PM

"Heart Full of Soul", Graham Gouldman of 10cc.

Ibby 07-18-2006 09:43 PM

DAMMIT I KNEW THAT ONE! Stupid UT beating me to it... mumble grumble rawr...

JayMcGee 07-19-2006 06:23 PM

Actually, Gouldman wrote several of the Yardbirds hits, Heart Full of Soul included, though I was thinking of 'For your Love'.

Still, UT got it right.

Undertoad 07-19-2006 08:49 PM

Gouldman also wrote "Bus Stop" for the Hollies. One of Crosby, Stills, and Nash was a Hollie when "Bus Stop" became their first charting hit. Which one?

footfootfoot 07-19-2006 09:05 PM

Steven (stephen?) Stills

Undertoad 07-20-2006 06:17 AM

No

Yes! He joined CSN because the Hollies weren't a good vehicle for his more serious work.

Beestie 07-20-2006 10:45 AM

WooooHoooo! After 264 posts, I finally get one.

OK, here's the Q:

Before Black Sabbath hit it big, their lead guitar player (Tony Iommi) left the group to play for another band (who also hit it big later) then quit after one practice to rejoin Sabbath. Name the other band. Bonus: Why did he quit the other band after only one practice?

Trilby 07-20-2006 12:09 PM

Deep Purple?

Coz Ronnie James Dio is an asshat?

Beestie 07-20-2006 12:32 PM

Not Deep Purple.

First clue: The band in question is still together and still touring. And by together, I mean the people that are commonly associated with the band are still members of the band.

Shawnee123 07-20-2006 01:35 PM

The Band?

Because he didn't like the name of The Band?

Beestie 07-20-2006 01:50 PM

Nope.

2nd clue: During the very brief time Iommi was with the other band, he appeared with them in the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus in 1969. The concert was filmed but the film was lost and for decades it was thought that no copies of it existed. I guess somebody found it because it was just released on DVD.

dar512 07-20-2006 04:29 PM

For those of you who don't know and can't wait for the answer - wikipedia knows.

Ibby 07-20-2006 05:30 PM

JETHRO TULL!

Without wikipedia, thank you very much.

BigV 07-20-2006 05:48 PM

Lost my rock and roll virginity to Jethro Tull. I haven't missed it since.

You, sir, are the WINNAH!!!

Trilby 07-20-2006 08:13 PM

Yeah, but why'd he quit?

dar512 07-20-2006 09:22 PM

Nice one Ibram.

Wiki doesn't say explicitly, but the gig was "an appearance on "The Rolling Stones' Rock'n'Roll Circus" in which the band mimed "A Song For Jeffrey".

I'm thinking the mime thing had something to do with it.

Nick Abrams (JT's lead guitar) left JT right before the appearance but Iommi hadn't had time to learn any of the music so he had to mime to a soundtrack. The official reason he left was over differences over the role he had to play - Ian Anderson was the boss and Iommi would have to be a supporting member. The reason Iommi later recounted in an interview was that they practiced too early in the morning.

Funny, because Iommi later started making Sabbath practice early in the am and credits Anderson for showing him how to run a band.

Ibby 07-21-2006 01:44 AM

An easy one... What entirely instrumental album recieved an RIAA warning label for explicit content?

Pancake Man 07-21-2006 02:05 AM

Tubular Bells? Lol.

Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" as performed by the Pittsburgh Queef Quintet.

A shot in the dark, there.

Undertoad 07-21-2006 07:37 AM

Jazz from Hell, F. Zappa

Ibby 07-21-2006 08:29 AM

Got it, UT.

The song G-Spot Tornado is what got it the warning... and even if that song hadnt been on there, they probably would have given him the warning just for being Frank Zappa.

Undertoad 07-21-2006 09:37 AM

Name the ancient country crooner who is a favorite of Melinda French Gates and performed at the Gates' wedding reception.

Spexxvet 07-21-2006 12:59 PM

Jedadiah Clampet?

jinx 07-21-2006 06:51 PM

George Jones? Hank Williams Jr.? Willie Nelson? Kenny Rodgers? uhhh.... Jim Nabors?

Undertoad 07-21-2006 07:24 PM

Yes, Willie Nelson.

jinx 07-21-2006 08:34 PM

Oh, now I feel bad for guessing wildly... So here's an easy one for the locals.

JFK Stadium, in Philadelphia, was condemed on July 13, 1989 and later demolished. What band performed the last public event at this awsome venue, on July 7, 1989?

Elspode 07-21-2006 08:59 PM

The Grateful Dead?

jinx 07-21-2006 09:29 PM

Correct! Amazing...
You're up sir... make it a good one.

Elspode 07-22-2006 09:16 AM

Jerry would be proud of such a loyal fan, Jinx.

The roof of Kansas City's Kemper Arena collapsed in a storm in June of 1979. What group's performance, scheduled for the next day, had to be cancelled due to the incident?

Trilby 07-24-2006 08:33 AM

the Who?

barefoot serpent 07-24-2006 08:48 AM

Rolling Stones?

Elspode 07-24-2006 07:44 PM

No, and no. As I am terminally busy, and do not wish to drag the game down, I will reveal that it was...Yes!

And I will pass the query privilege to the first person who grabs it. Gotta go move some more.

capnhowdy 07-24-2006 07:53 PM

taps fingers on desk... doesn't have a question worthy of this thread.....

Ibby 07-25-2006 12:50 AM

What frontman, who is now more famous for his huge shows he organized than his band, has been quoted as saying that he started doing rock and roll for the sex, and that he lost his virginity at 13?

jinx 07-25-2006 01:29 AM

Perry Ferrell?

Ibby 07-25-2006 01:56 AM

Who?

Undertoad 07-25-2006 04:26 AM

Ozzy?

Ibby 07-25-2006 04:33 AM

No, Ozzy is famous enough from Sabbath and his solo stuff, and didnt say that.

There's a pretty good chance you've never heard more than one or two songs by this guy, but I'm sure you know of him.
