Ours was mostly an abysmal failure. Everything was 1/5 its normal size. Tiny tomatoes, tiny carrots, tiny cantaloupe...most things just didn't do much.

Need better dirt!

Is that what it was? Well, I can believe it. The area we put aside to garden was full of rocks! We tried to beef it up with some manure and top soil, but we probably needed more. It doesn't help that it sat in water for half the summer. We were so spoiled last year.

I was shooting from the hip, but that's probably it... this year I bought a load of compost and added it to the beds, very richly, and everything loved it.

Including the weeds which eventually made it too hard to maintain...

Every year learn a little more... next year we will not plant anything too closely... the tomato vines choked each other too early in the whole season.

One of the hardest things to do, is thinning the babies when they sprout. After all, seeing the sprouts is exciting, and rewarding after all that prep work. But that's the way to make sure you've got the bed covered, with optimum spacing, and no wasted space.
