WHAT MAKE YOU THINK I CHINESE!? I AM KOREAN! Do I rook Chinese to you!?

Clodfobble 08-22-2008 08:26 AM

Just the other day during a discussion of the Olympics my (half-Vietnamese) stepdaughter declared loudly, "I hate Chinese people!" Shocked, we asked her what she was talking about. She mumbled, "Well, because everyone always says I look like I'm Chinese..."

Urbane Guerrilla 08-22-2008 03:46 PM

Had you ever mentioned there were and are ethnic Chinese in Viet Nam? A minority, but they're there.

As for looking Chinese, the most distinctive Vietnamese feature I remember, aside from them not wearing a Chinese-society face (Japan has a lot more of that anyway; you can often tell a Japanese by how he holds his face) is the Vietnamese nose.

Nah, we try to reiterate as often as we can that she's American. Aside from the factual nature of it, that side of her family has been known to use their "minority" status as an enhancement to their perpetual victimhood.

Well I thought you cared since you took the time to make a point of it. Anyway, obviously we disagree on what sort of job China has done of the olympics.

The end.

So much for 'Zeppelin' at the closing...
what it ACTUALLY amounted to was
jimmy page playing guitar while that
british idol (or whatever) chick sang
whole lotta love
and prettymuch mangled the song.

disappointing.

Does anyone know how many countries sent teams/individuals, to compete in every sport/event?

BigV 08-25-2008 11:44 AM

204

wait...

how many countries competed in *every* event?

I don't know that. My guess is zero countries fielded competitors in every event.

eta:

302 events.. yikes.

So many threads suitable for this story: here, Weird News, and my personal favorite WTF. Why? Because WTF has a double meaning now: World Taekwando Federation. But I like the traditional meaning better for this story.

Cuban banned for referee kick

BEIJING (Reuters) - Cuba's Angel Valodia Matos was banned for life from taekwondo on Saturday for kicking a referee and a Chinese favorite was knocked out in a controversial ruling as the final bouts of the Olympic tournament descended into chaos.

After a heated exchange, Matos struck the referee in the head with a high kick. He also kicked another official before being escorted out of the arena.
HA! Take *that*! You don't mess with the Zohan!

deadbeater 08-25-2008 07:26 PM

Matos should have decked the referee, just to make the Olympic officials take another look at the bad officiating, if only to prevent another wronged participant from killing a reaf next time.

The host nation automatically qualifies for every event. So, probably just tht one.

P.S. I want that Tae Kwon Do guy on the Australian Soccer team. There's a certain ref I have in mind. Grrrrrrrr.

Clodfobble 08-25-2008 08:10 PM

Really? I had never heard that. Very interesting.

The Olympics are getting too wussy.
