Apple jacks!

Undertoad 02-13-2005 09:56 AM

Total, or Quisp?

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/cereal.php

wolf 02-13-2005 10:32 AM

Quisp

He's a hardy little fellow, even had to go so far as to claw his way out of the grave. Turns out he wasn't dead, just in suspended animation.

You can't keep a good alien down.

Undertoad 02-13-2005 11:06 AM

Frosted Flakes, or Count Chocula?

Dagney 02-13-2005 11:29 AM

Frosted Flakes :)

Undertoad 02-13-2005 11:30 AM

Cinnamon Life, or Raisin Bran?

Trilby 02-13-2005 11:41 AM

Raisin Bran

Dunlavy 02-13-2005 12:00 PM

A little of column A, a little of column B.

Makes the world go round.

Undertoad 02-13-2005 12:10 PM

It's the Elite Eight!

Some Cinderella stories here. And a 1-2 matchup worthy of the final. Some think Alpha-Bits is a contender, but I ask you, who have they beaten? The South was a stronger category where even Rice Chex, the 10th seed, seems like it belongs in the Eight.

Undertoad 02-13-2005 02:05 PM

Cheerios, or Alpha-Bits?

wolf 02-13-2005 02:08 PM

Cheerios!

Undertoad 02-13-2005 02:38 PM

Wheaties, or Rice Chex?

404Error 02-13-2005 03:07 PM

Wheaties of course. I mean it's the breakfast of champions, right?

Undertoad 02-13-2005 04:26 PM

Apple Jacks, or Quisp?

SteveDallas 02-13-2005 04:29 PM

Apple Jacks or what???

Apple Jacks.

wolf 02-13-2005 05:02 PM

Oh, the humanity! The hardy little alien of my childhood has fallen to one of his sugary brothers, with a catchier jingle, but no cute mascot!

Undertoad 02-13-2005 05:19 PM

Frosted Flakes, or Raisin Bran?

perth 02-13-2005 10:33 PM

Frosted Flakes

wolf 02-13-2005 10:48 PM

Yayy!!!

Go Tony!!

They'rrrrrre Grrrrreat!

Undertoad 02-14-2005 07:34 AM

It's the Final Four!!!!

I didn't get the automation built in time, so let's go with Wolf's Rules of Order here.

Cheerios, or Wheaties?

Apple Jacks, or Frosted Flakes?

Send me a Private Message with your choice for both of these two games. Voting on the semi-final ends at 11:59 PM tonight, 2/14/2005. I'm not going to add an extra vote for good reasons because I can't take the heavy responsibility of adding an additional point. You may argue for your own personal choices in this thread. Good luck... and may the best cereal win.

Katkeeper 02-14-2005 09:02 AM

Wheaties!!

SteveDallas 02-14-2005 09:56 AM

As befits the Final Four, we have some very strong contenders and two tough choices. This one will require some thought.

glatt 02-14-2005 10:41 AM

Has anyone had Wheaties lately? I had them this morning. They are delicious! They are good for you. They are all-American. They are an original. Vote for Wheaties. Tell your friends. I won't say anything negative about Cheerios. How could I? But they are no Wheaties.

And in the other game, well, they are both good. But I voted for Tony the Tiger. I have nothing but fond memories for Frosted Flakes, even if they are too sweet for this 37 year old today.

warch 02-14-2005 11:14 AM

Cheerios...Donut seeds...Classic. Happy. Floaty. Os. Tuggin at your oat healthy heart.

mrnoodle 02-14-2005 12:29 PM

Cheerios and Frosted Flakes. Just cuz.

Interesting how the final four came out though. If the two flake-type cereals competed against each other, and the two kibble(?) ones against each other, I'm not sure if my vote would've been the same.

wolf 02-14-2005 01:02 PM

Such a matchup would not have changed my choices.

Undertoad 02-14-2005 11:03 PM

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/cereal.php

Your semi-final scores are in

North-South game: Cheerios 8 Wheaties 1

East-West game: Frosted Flakes 6 Apple Jacks 2

And now your field of 64 FINAL.

Cheerios, or Frosted Flakes?

Send me a Private Message with your choice. Don't be shy, it's just a little message. Voting on the semi-final ends at 11:59 PM tonight, 2/15/2005. Good luck... and may the best cereal win.

SteveDallas 02-14-2005 11:17 PM

I'm not even going to ask why there were 9 votes for one and 8 for the other.

Undertoad 02-14-2005 11:26 PM

And yet you desire the answer.

SteveDallas 02-15-2005 11:19 AM

Nope. I slept well last night without the answer and I will again tonight. Even two or three years ago I would have wanted the answer. I have now come to a place in my life where, really, on almost any question, I'm usually better off not knowing.

What I desire is . . .

well, never mind.

mrnoodle 02-15-2005 11:55 AM

Cheerios v. FFs

Now that's a battle. I'm actually going to think about that one for a while.

And the winner is...Cheerios

By a 6-1 margin

Thanks to all who participated!

Final brackets: http://cellar.org/fieldof64/cereal.php

should we do another one? i could automate the nominations and the votes.

SteveDallas 02-15-2005 11:36 PM

Wow, was I really the only one who voted for Frosted Flakes? That's surprising.

Yeah, let's do another one. I have no idea what subject.

TV sitcoms?

TV sitcoms?

Lookout123, here's your chance. You can nominate Joanie Loves Chachi. ;)

Undertoad 02-16-2005 07:42 AM

actors/tresses
cars
websites other than cellar.org
countries of the world
cities of the world
historical figures
world landmarks
movies
books
beverages
elements of the periodic table

Katkeeper 02-16-2005 09:11 AM

A vote for beverages, continuing with the theme of consumables.

How about animals?

lookout123 02-16-2005 11:23 AM

i say cities of the world or historical figures.

mrnoodle 02-16-2005 11:53 AM

historical figures. But they should compete based on some arbitrary thing that has nothing to do with what they're known for. Like best hair or something.

Beestie 02-16-2005 11:57 AM

Please: something that won't degenerate into a "my ______ is better than yours" fight. We get an earful of that in the other threads.

The cereal thing was good.

I think (SD's idea of) sitcoms would be an excellent choice - there are so many good ones to nominate.

BrianR 02-16-2005 12:31 PM

My Cheerios are better than your Frosted FLakes! NYAH NYAH NYAH! :D

What television have you been watching??? Sure, maybe a half dozen, but 64??? We could almost run a backwards field of 64 to determine the WORST. (I think I know what my #1 seed is.)

Happy Monkey 02-16-2005 05:22 PM

There may have been 64 in the history of sitcoms, including British ones.

I like the beverage idea, and nominate human body parts as a topic (ooh, that'll get 'em going :))

LabRat 02-17-2005 09:12 AM

Oh, and instead of sitcoms, maybe stars of sitcoms? Homer, Hawkeye Peirce, Andy, Chrissy etc.

That is a great idea.

lookout123 02-17-2005 10:01 AM

oohoohooh ! i like it! let's go for sitcom stars next. this has to be something that we care enough about to participate, but not to the point that this becomes another argument thread.

Undertoad 02-17-2005 10:38 AM

I was kinda hoping for something less culture-bound so the rest of the world could play? Or is that an impossible goal.

lookout123 02-17-2005 10:46 AM

hmmm. don't they have satellites? all that means is that david hasselhoff would take an early lead as our global friends weighed in.

LabRat 02-17-2005 11:07 AM

weren't all the cereals US based??

SteveDallas 02-17-2005 11:16 AM

Were you thinking of using different parts of the human body, or comparing the same specific body part as manifested on different people?

LabRat 02-17-2005 11:37 AM

Different parts of 1 body. leg vs. arm; liver vs spleen; eye vs nose etc. End result would be the most 'valuable' body part i guess. Hopefully it wouldn't end up being P vs. V, but with this group... Or, we could compare a specific part of different people. biggest/smallest or best/worst nose, lips, legs etc. Kind of hard to come up with topics that have at least 64 different things that could be compared.

What about snack foods? potato chips vs. doritos; Ho-Ho's vs. Swiss Cake Rolls?

chainsaw 02-17-2005 11:47 AM

I enjoyed this cereal battle a little too much. Next we could do... beers, candy bars, candy in general, countries, animals, constellations, movies, and I do like the sitcom idea, but we could broaden it to all tv shows?

glatt 02-17-2005 01:43 PM

I like the countries idea, but wonder how it would work as we get close to the final. Obviously, the USA would win most votes, since this board is based in PA.

If you couldn't vote for your own country (honor system) the USA would lose, so that wouldn't be fair either.

Sitcom/TV characters would be a good topic.

If we had all types of TV characters, you could end up with Les Nesman v. Andy Taylor.

Undertoad 02-17-2005 07:37 PM

Labrat, there were non-US cereals but they didn't go anywhere... some major brands are identical in other countries... I dunno.

BigV 02-17-2005 08:43 PM

brainstorming

comic book heroes (superman v batman)
comic book villians
Hey, villians in general, historical and/or fictional
movie monsters (alien v predator v the thing) /shivers/

LabRat 02-18-2005 08:52 AM

OK, OK, OK, enough dilly dallying around. how about board games???

checkers, chutes and ladders, scrabble, fox and hounds, sorry, parcheesi, monopoly, mah jong (sp?), monopoly, risk, connect four (not tecnically a BOARD game), battleship (nope, not that one either, but still fun as hell), memory (yeah, yeah no board either), chess, backgammon, candyland, (much better)...

OR, just games in gereral. everyone in the world, rich or poor, english speaking or not has some kind of game they can play at a kitchen table. so, is that ok? UT, I guess i just assumed that the few cereals I hadn't heard of were just US ones i had't heard of b/c i don't shop at organic/wholefoods stores. i wasn't trying to be an asshat. :) sorry.

LabRat 02-24-2005 09:52 AM

:( did we give up on this?

Undertoad 02-24-2005 10:05 AM

No no, I was just hoping to create a nomination tool before we started the next round.
