not having that problem.... as you see it's now into the 400s and only 60ish behind the crapeze ;)

My friends "the alphabet" are currently sharing MB's genius with their Double Alphabet siblings. I expect their votes will start pouring in any time now

Spexxvet 01-06-2010 02:23 PM

HM takes the lead, thanks to my friends 1 at aol.com through 50 at aol.com!

Shawnee123 01-06-2010 02:24 PM

My measly vote has been cast!

Flint 01-06-2010 03:48 PM

Do they make colored packaging tape?

Quote:

Entrant must demonstrate that the sculpture subject of the Entry was created using Scotch® Premium Performance Packaging Tape #3850 or, alternatively, Scotch® High Performance Packaging Tape #3500/3501. The amount of Scotch® Packaging Tape used to create the sculpture must be 90% or higher;

Happy Monkey 01-06-2010 04:04 PM

They make permanent markers.

And, while I appreciate the voting efforts, I might suggest keeping the "friends" to a dull roar. I don't see anything in the rules, but I'd hate to be disqualified, or to leave a bad taste in the judges' mouths when they tally votes...

Flint 01-06-2010 04:11 PM

Ah, they do make permanent markers. I've "glazed" paper-mâché with elmer's glue and markers.

glatt 01-06-2010 04:21 PM

One of the other sculptures has clearly more than 10% of the mass of the thing made up of pebbles used as ballast. It should be disqualified. Also, the cricket bat one uses a ball that clearly has more mass than the entire tape sculpture itself. One has rope lighting all winding around in it. Each of them uses materials other than tape that would be more then 10% of the mass of the thing.

Happy Monkey 01-06-2010 04:45 PM

When I was building mine, people suggested lighting it. One factor in deciding not to do that was the time and complication involved, but another was the fact that it doesn't take much material to weigh more than 10% more than tape.

I used a fair bit of permanent ink, but I think I'm safely below the 10% mark...

Happy Monkey 01-18-2010 03:22 PM

I'm losing ground, so if anyone hasn't voted, please do!

classicman 01-18-2010 03:35 PM

I was just wondering about this - When do the polls close?

Happy Monkey 01-18-2010 03:47 PM

The end of February.

xoxoxoBruce 01-18-2010 06:15 PM

They still won't let me vote again.

classicman 01-18-2010 06:24 PM

pssst - use a bogus email addy

xoxoxoBruce 01-18-2010 06:31 PM

That's dishonest, you ballot box stuffing conservative. :p Besides, I'm not going to plug in somebody else's email and have them get spammed. The voting also only counts 10%, and if the judges find out the email addresses are not valid, HM may suffer in the judging.

Pico and ME 01-18-2010 06:34 PM

I have more than one email addy...I used all of them. I wonder if they bother tracking?

xoxoxoBruce 01-18-2010 06:35 PM

I used all mine too, I think that's legit.

monster 01-18-2010 07:28 PM

they allow any old string of text. It doesn't even need an @ symbol.

busterb 01-18-2010 07:48 PM

Just listening to what Ed Schultz said on MSNBC.

Nope, I clear the cookies a couple times a day, with cclearer.

TheMercenary 01-19-2010 02:40 PM

Speaking of tape creations, History Channel had a Myth Buster episode last night where the whole episode was all the things made with Duct (Duck) Tape. It was pretty cool. They lifted a full sized car with 100 strips, repaired a hole in a boat, and built a fully functional cannon which fired a 10 pound cannon ball about 150 feet. And finally they built a fully functional 15 foot sail boat out of 23 rolls with a steel frame and sailed it all over the bay. Pretty damm impressive.

Happy Monkey 01-19-2010 04:46 PM

I saw that one. That's a good show.

Flint 01-19-2010 04:52 PM

Thread bump post bumps thread.

But, yeah, the duct tape stuff was awesome.

It was wild.

xoxoxoBruce 01-22-2010 01:12 AM

Germans call it Panzer Tape. you know there's duct tape and there's DUCT tape. We've got some MIL Sec stuff at work that would rip the balls off a brass monkey.

Undertoad 01-22-2010 12:17 PM

Some of that choice is working its way down to the masses... I was in Lowes recently and wound up getting Tough duct tape with No Residue, for those times when you don't want to tear off the tape and leave patches of grey goo.

Also of note is the availability of industrial strength Velcro™, with industrial strength adhesive. Sadly, I'm not into bondage S&M, or the possibilities would be endless.

As opposed to those times when that's just what you want!

I'm a big fan of duct tape in theory, but find it rather unpleasant in practice. If there's a non-goo version available, I'm all for it.

DanaC 01-22-2010 01:04 PM

I just voted with two email addies.

Happy Monkey 01-22-2010 01:37 PM

Thanks!

Happy Monkey 02-05-2010 05:10 PM

This one displays an interesting geometric relationship:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4047/...b1403fe3c8.jpg

The tape itself is an icosahedron (or a D20 in D&D terms) with a pyramid on each face. But stringing thread between each pyramid point creates a dodecahedron (D12).

glatt 02-05-2010 05:12 PM

Cool! I see the pentagons in the thread.

kerosene 02-07-2010 12:14 PM

That is so cool!

xoxoxoBruce 02-08-2010 02:31 AM

Aw, anybody can do that. All I'd need is some tape, markers, a hundred years and fifty boxes of band-aids.

Happy Monkey 02-08-2010 09:33 AM

Don't forget gold thread!

xoxoxoBruce 02-08-2010 11:12 AM

Oh yeah, I could use it to help hold the band-aids on, too.

Happy Monkey 02-22-2010 12:45 PM

Less than a week to go on the contest voting. I'm currently #15 out of 73, which isn't too bad.

Happy Monkey 03-02-2010 12:27 AM

I ended up 18 out of 144 in voting. Results come in on or about April 30.

monster 03-02-2010 07:59 AM

excellent

glatt 03-02-2010 08:15 AM

If the judges have any taste at all, you will win this.

Happy Monkey 03-02-2010 09:37 AM

Thanks!

Happy Monkey 04-13-2010 12:49 AM

Alas, no joy. As for the judges' taste, even taking mine out of the running, I'd only put the angel one near the top of the entries. Ah, well... Maybe they'll do it again next year.

xoxoxoBruce 04-13-2010 01:11 AM

Encouraging people to build those big figures sells more tape.

lumberjim 04-13-2010 01:16 AM

to be fair, I think the vision of the contest holders was more along the lines of the lost mold types. HM's geometrical structure was relatively unconventional.

That's true, but they were basing a large part of the score on originality. I guess the judges didn't actually want what they said they wanted.

Sorry HM! You were robbed.

Happy Monkey 04-13-2010 08:50 AM

Thanks

squirell nutkin 04-13-2010 10:23 AM

I love Permacel Gaffer's tape. I guess it is now Shurtape.

monster 04-13-2010 09:47 PM

I think you were robbed too. I like the goldfish one, but it's not in the same class as yours. The other three? you can keep 'em. Where is the originality?

Happy Monkey 04-17-2010 03:00 PM

Thanks!

Here's my consolation prize:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/...e95837f57d.jpg

DanaC 04-17-2010 03:12 PM

Definately robbed.

glatt 04-17-2010 04:16 PM

How many rolls did you use for yours? Did you get back more than you put in? (ignoring time and effort)

Happy Monkey 04-17-2010 10:09 PM

I used three rolls, so I'm well ahead in the tape department.

lumberjim 04-17-2010 10:45 PM

i have one of those wrapping paper cutters. love it. somehow, I've managed to find it on christmas eve for the last 3 years.

Happy Monkey 04-17-2010 10:49 PM

It does look like a pretty useful design. That and the scissors will be the handiest.

Though the 6-pack of tape may be useful if there's another off-the-roll contest.

Happy Monkey 09-24-2010 02:31 PM

Another one using the "Off the Roll" tape:

Shawnee123 09-24-2010 02:37 PM

It's so pretty! :)

Happy Monkey 11-24-2010 04:39 PM

I've entered a Washington Post craft contest. I'm not sure if you can view the entries if you don't have an account. No voting on this one.

I've also begun work on one for this year's Off The Roll contest. I don't know if I'll have the time to finish it. I have til the end of February, but it's ambitious. And the later I enter, the less time for votes.

Lamplighter 11-24-2010 04:53 PM

Happy, Are you # 8 of 166 ?

xoxoxoBruce 11-24-2010 05:21 PM

I like them, but they may be to subtle for that contest.

At the moment, I'm #8 and 9. The numbers change as more entries are added. My washpo username is matthewwb.

Possibly.
