This:
http://static1.bicycletires.com/imagesLarge/dnvpp-1.jpg Detours Toocan bike panniers. They cost $60 each. they are almost top of the range for your regular mom-on-a-bike. I got a rack strong enough to take them that cost $40, and one of these. Then another. They are indestructible. I'm you're regular cheapskate walmart shopper, but the wat i load up my bike, I've killed several racks and panniers. These rock. Right now my luggage system cost half as much as the bike. But i can load it up as unevenly as I want ans still cruise no hands. Awesome. |
(they come with a rain cover and that waterproof, throwing-on-the-floor-proof rubber base is invaluable for a swim mom who regularly driops her bags on deck, wanders off to deal with something and comes back to find the big kids dove in and displacd the pool water onto the deck right where i put my stuff)

That would be a kick in the ass if you were just about to turn the page, Pensive Monkey.

Both for the Brits - soz.
Gordon Ramsey has put his name to two (as far as I know) sauces in honour of Red Nose Day next year. One is mushroom based, and Dads has a sensitivity to the 'shrooms - sometimes he's fine, sometimes he pukes like Limey. So it's never worth risking. But the one pictured is proper spicy. Ever been in a pub and the chilli is basically Bolognaise with beans? Not here! Your mouth will be singing until dessert, but no ring of fire, honest. Anyway, Ramsey's face is on it but he gets no royalties, and Sainsbury's have it reduced at the mo (contracts mean Comic Relief get the same donation.) Snap it up, even if you have to mix it with yoghurt or sour cream to tame it. The other is generic fizzy water. I LOVE IT! The one pictured is currently the cheapest (I think) but only by 1p. Even my penny pinching Dad can be persuaded (by Mum) to pick me up a coupla bottles. Anyone dieting - BUY IT! It bloats your belly so you don't fancy snacking. It's bloody cheap (there must be generic brands worldwide) and it hydrates you - good, because many ppl confuse hunger cravings with thirst (apparently, not my opinion.) Drink it. Drink bottles of it. But if you drink too many and kill yourself it's not my fault, okay? |

Red nose day?
|
A day when people do silly things to raise money for charity.
|
Ah yes, sorry. Red Nose day is a Friday in March every two years, run by Comic Relief. This is a disparate group of (mostly) comedians, some entertainers who raise money on one specific date. Think Live Aid, but funnier and more regular. Their symbol is a red nose, which changes in style each time so - like football shirts - you can't wear the same one year after year. Then again, it's for charity, not corporate profit. Many shows make a one-off special for the event. It's very much like Children In Need (coming up in November) but nominally funnier. IMO Children In Need is often funnier because it's only s'posed to be lighthearted so there's no pressure on performers. Oh, did you say John Barrowman is in it this year? Oh, really? Not that that makes me more inclined towards it or anything...
Sainsbury's are a big sponsor of Comic Relief (all the big four have their own charities) so this is a way to slowly sneak it into your consciousness... Asda make a big deal of Children In Need for example. ETA - found this on Wiki. Says what I did (phew!) but in more detail in case you're completely fascinated. Inserted a link for CIN to be fair. ETA - again. Comic Relief happened this year. I missed it. I think. I can only assume my parents were away and I was drunk. Or they were home and I was drunk. I was drunk a lot early this year. So the sauces are probably reduced because they are nearing expiration date, as opposed to being released early. Not being afraid of things like expiration dates I will buy them up and use them until the end of the next century (or until I run out, or die) and recommend everyone else to do so. |
DownUnda, red nose day is specifically to raise money for research into SIDS; Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, AKA Cot Death.

Heat Patches. They Work!
http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/31...41_500X500.jpg These were very inexpensive. I was skeptical but I thought the warmth would feel good. The next morning I was surprised to find they had taken the pain away. |

hummm wonderful possibilities in a delicious drink. I wonder if freezing the coconut milk changes it's healthful properties any? It is a nice way to stay drunk and get healthy at the same time. :p |
Creature Comforts
A hot bath with a shot of: Olbas Herbal Bath , and Dr. Bronner's Peppermint castile soap. And a sandalwood candle, from Pier One, I think.
With: a hot cup of Celestial Seasonings Mint Magic tea, with honey, lemon, Broncolin (Mexican...cough syrup?), and Sailor Jerry's spiced rum. This is the most relaxed you can legally get without a prescription. Edit: As for coconuts, get one cut to shape in its raw husk, drill two holes with a sanitized drill bit (one to drain, one for air to get back in) and drain the juice. Mix with Sailor Jerry's and fresh-squeezed limes, use a small funnel to pour back into coconut shell/husk. Pop in a straw. |
you had me at Mexican cough syrup.

Pieminister Pies!
I'm not usually a big pie fan, but their Moo and Blue pie caught my eye in the supermarket just before Christmas. I defrosted and ate it today. OMG. It was the best pie EVER. I was worried the pastry would be dry, but in fact I have never eaten better pastry in my life. And it was charmingly handmade - it was a little wonky, as if it was shrugging a pie shoulder at me to say, "What can you do, eh?" Oh, Moo and Blue was a steak and stilton pie. Perfectly balanced flavours. I will definitely have another one, and see if the other one in the range appeals to Mum. You see Dad has a pie every week, so I figured if we got one for the same night we could have Pie Night! Mum's not really into Stilton, and I honestly can't remember what the other flavour in Sainsbury's was. An example of their range: Quote:
I liked the fact that they claim one of the ingredients to be "lovely pastry" for each pie. And they are right to do so! Am off to send them an email to tell them so right now. |
Can I suggest that if you ever see Higgity (or Higgedy, can't recall which) pies you give them a go? They are deelish! I also am not a big pie fan (strangely, given I hail from the land of pies) but Higgedy pies are great.
|
There were Higgedy pies next to them actually.
I bought the Pieminister one because it was on special offer - which means they taste better :yum: I will bear your recommendation in mind, but I am in the throes of new-found pie-love, so it may not be any time soon. |

I can enthusiastically endorse the hooded MA-1 flight jacket by Alpha. Light but very warm. Wears like iron too. I've had mine three years now and it still looks new.
You can get it at your local Army/Navy store or online. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...kL._AA280_.jpg |

Aidells Chicken and apple sausage!
Tonight I sliced them then sauteed them in butter along with sliced apples and onions, caramelized with a touch of brown sugar and served over rice. The package has other great recipe ideas other than that one but I found it to be a great little sausage...a great little dish. |
ghirardelli brownies. We made a batch of these from mix today, and they are easily the best brownies I've ever had. Better than any other mix or homemade brownie. Simply amazing.
|
I concur wholeheartedly glatt. But just to be sure you need to send a couple of yours my way. ;)
|
For brownies? You concur, and I'll swear to it. ;)

I was given a bottle of Linden tree honey for Solstice from Tremblay Apiaries. It is fantastic! It's lighter than clover honey with a much better after taste. It does not appear to be crystallizing yet either so I'm assuming it has been processed differently?
Follow up... It is raw unfiltered honey, which may explain the lack of crystals. |
I recently bought some raw unfiltered apple blossom honey at a farmer's market just before Christmas, and it was very crystallized. So I'm not sure what causes it. Maybe temperature? But warming it up a little in the microwave will get rid of those crystals without harming the flavor.
|
There was a thing on one of the offbeat channels last night about the honey industry. They said when they have excess honey production, and it starts to crystallize while sitting, they just warm it up a bit.
|
Let's see, I'll want to break this down into categories.
Food - Herr's Hot Cheese Curls - cheesy sweet and spicy Okabashi sandals - Comfortable, soft, cheap, durable, and recyclable. I bought two pair on supersale at the supermarket a few years back and still use both pairs as my indoor slippers. Good arch support and little reflexology nubbies. I'm not so sure about the dishwasher instructions, though. Quote:
Emerson MP205 MP3 player - I thought they discontinued these things but they keep showing up at the QVC outlet ($15 or less depending on sales). Cheap plastic MP3 player with voice recorder and FM. The onboard memory is a measly 128MB but the slot handles up to 2GB SD cards. It only uses a single AAA battery. Unlike many more expensive players, there is a simple dedicated button to switch between EQ presets. It's obviously cheap construction and price mean I can leave it on my pool chair without worrying about losing a $100 MP3 player. Being able to swap out cards in less than 10 seconds means I can carry different sets of music. Note: I haved moved up to a multimedia player, but the Emerson is still my 'go-to' for music-only. Discgear Selector 50 - A manual CD/DVD jukebox that organizes 50 CD/DVDs into a 6x7 inch space. I have two 50's, but they also sell a 100 model. Restaurant.com gift certificates - If you eat out a lot, buying these is almost like printing money. You have to get on the mailing list to get the discount code. Every month discounts go from %50 to %80 (sometimes %90). At %80 off, a $25 gift certificate is $2. More of a coupon than a true gift certificate. Nexxtech leather keychain light - I bought this cheap little keychain light years ago at Circuit City. It's a stitched leather squeeze light. Every other keychain light I've bought has ended up with broken switches, broken plastic links, cracked plastic cases. You have to admire durability. Rechargeable NimH batteries - My cordless mouse can't do without them. Saves me money and saves the planet (see below). Duct Tape - Many uses. I am due to build my next duct tape wallet soon. Fluorescent Bulbs - Saves energy which saves me money. I tell all the Birkenstock wearing hot college liberal babes that I do it to save the planet. Cat-5 and Cat-6 cable - For all of this 'Wi-Fi' crap, there is nothing more secure and reliable than a wired connection. |

Wouldn't it be a function of how hot you make it rather than how you heat it?

microwaves are the work of the devil. look how easy it is to type in 666 on the keypad. and they explode eggs which we all know are representative of the Easter Bunny and therefore Jesus who got a re-erection which makes him a keeper/saver/something like that.

I've recently started going out of my way to eat raw honey because it tastes so much better than supermarket honey. If it really does help with the allergies and stuff, then great. But I used the microwave to heat mine up because I didn't feel like messing with the pan of water and cleaning up after.
|
Don't need a pan, really.
Holding the bottle under hot water running in the sink is usually enough to get the crystals to break up. |
