you just ate your children?

DucksNuts 01-07-2008 04:46 AM

Two mini chocolate pavs with whipped cream and banana.

I feel ill, and need to do an hour on the treadmill tomorrow per pav me thinks.

monster 02-08-2008 08:02 AM

Half a maltloaf. With butter. It was last night, actually. But the guilt is still with me. My MIL brought it from the UK when she came at christmas, but didn't tell us -I just found it in a bag with loads of packs of cookies. I wasn't sure if it would still be any good because it was squished almost flat and a few weeks past the sell-by date, so I figured there was only one way to find out.

(It was good -I would probably have had the other half for breakfast this morning if beest had not gallantly rescued me by consuming the other half last night)

lumberjim 02-08-2008 08:28 AM

christ, i thought that said meatloaf

classicman 02-08-2008 08:30 AM

me too! I kept reading it and trying to figger out how she ate 1/2 a meatloaf

Shawnee123 02-08-2008 08:51 AM

It was a really small loaf...a loaflet if you will.

Urbane Guerrilla 02-08-2008 12:12 PM

A bun!

I just looked up "sanga." Am I going to have to look up "maltloaf" too?

I did anyway, just for my 'satiable curiosity. Aside from the extract of malt it looks a lot like Date Nut Bread -- but gooier. Date Nut Bread only has islands of sticky goo -- marshes? -- that once were pitted dates. I can put up my mother's recipe on the Latest Recipe Thread if anyone wants.

Date & Nut Maltloaf

Why do I insist on buying microwavable diet Mexican meals??? They always have some sort of unidentifiable meat in them that is referred to as chicken, but must be a puree.

I am going to be hungry in about an hour!!

Urbane Guerrilla 02-08-2008 01:13 PM

Around here I'd never do that -- but I do live in a heavily Hispanic town in Southern California. They aren't about diet -- I've never seen sugar-free Jarritos sodas nor sugar free sodas in Mexican grocery marts -- but you can leave off the sour cream and rice in the burrito and lean heavily to the pico-de-gallo and other salsa.

Clodfobble 02-09-2008 02:54 PM

I just voluntarily consumed pancakes with maple syrup.

One, I don't really like pancakes. Dense bread products just aren't my thing. I'd rather do something fluffier like a waffle. Two, I hate hate hate maple syrup. It makes me gag. When the kids have it, I make them eat on paper plates so I don't have to wash them.

But rarely, maybe once a year, out of nowhere I get a hankerin' for it. These were multi-grain pancakes so they had a nice texture, and the syrup was thinner and less pungent than your typical bottled product. Man, they were good. But even now, I can look back at the meal and say, "Nope, I'm good now. No need to eat that again."

Clever.

I was actually thinking of a Gary Larson Cartoon -insects having coffee one offers the other a snack "oh no, I just ate my young" or something to that effect. But I can't find it via google and all the far side books are still in the basement....

and then there's this

(best recording I could find, sorry)

Urbane Guerrilla 02-09-2008 08:33 PM

Fobble, all I can say is you have a very strange palate... me, I reckon Grade B maple syrup the food of the Deciduous Forest Gods.

I mean berry syrups at IHOP are, well, okay. My palate just can't tell me why they bother.

Perry Winkle 02-10-2008 03:15 PM

I see those at the grocery store all the time. Are they worth a try?

There are so many odd things in UK grocers that I just don't have the money and sense of adventure to try them all...

xoxoxoBruce 02-10-2008 03:28 PM

If they come with that pile of coke on the board, go for it.

Perry Winkle 02-11-2008 10:58 AM

I picked up two Soreen malt cakes today. They were two for £0.69. Not bad, not as sweet as I had expected, which is good.

monster 02-11-2008 08:32 PM

in reply to PW's original question, although once posted, i see i missed a page!:

depends. You Americans aren't into malty fruity things as much as we Brits, but that said, beest is not a big fan of dried fruit, but can inhale a few buttered slices of maltloaf and want more. Very rich and sticky. They are one of the few items in the Uk that regularly go on "special offer" in the UK, so it's worth waiting until you see them "on sale".

monster 02-11-2008 08:34 PM

2 for 69p? Fucking Hell! Mail me a load, will you? Where did you get them? -must set MIL onto it right away!

The Co-Op (awesome building) in Newcastle city center has them on special. They have some pretty killer pita bread at 2 for 79p too.

My favorite snack is to walk to the Co-Op for cheap pita bread and then hit the Sainsbury's Local on the way back up the hill to grab their hummus, which is 10p cheaper than at the Co-Op. Yes, I like the cheap.

I should have thought of buttering the maltloaf. I'm not sure I really need to. It's pretty delicious all on its own.

monster 02-12-2008 06:47 PM

Damnit, I think her nearest co-op is too far now she moved. Sainsbury's Houmous is far superior to Co-op's anyway. Co-op do a really good cheap bottle pub bitter.

If your local Sainsbury's does oatcakes (very thin and flat like crepes, 8"ish diameter, 6 in a pack), let me know -we're in business!

Have you been to Lindisfarne yet? Bamburgh? Seahouses? that's round where I used to live.

I'll check Sainsbury's for the oatcakes. There are so many strange things in the stores here that I can hardly keep track. I'd be happy to put together a package if you're dying for oatcakes and maltcakes.

I've been so busy, I have been nowhere. This fact makes me kind of sad. The year is disappearing and I don't want to get to September and head home without getting to Scotland and a few places close to Newcastle.

On the way back to Newcastle at winter break I rode the train from London. That was a lot of fun. I'm totally addicted to the train after riding the great European rail system. (Eurostar is AMAZING.)

I can't believe I ate that entire 3 pack of chocolate caramel slice things. (Which are one of the few food items from England that North America needs to catch onto.)

monster 02-13-2008 07:16 PM

You HAVE to go to Lindisfarne. And Alnwick Castle. And Craster where you can try the freshly snoked kippers. And Bamburgh.

BigV 02-14-2008 11:15 AM

I can't believe I just ate a stack of Tums two inches high. Not all in one bite, but over the course of the last 56 minutes.

I can't believe I just ate a large bowl of potato salad for dinner. With barbecue sauce on it.

Urbane Guerrilla 04-13-2009 10:00 PM

Sounds kind of good, Clod -- but doesn't the BBQ sauce overwhelm the hard-cooked egg component of the potato salad?

I just discovered I rather like a dab of mustard on nachos. Plays well with the cheese sauce.

Aliantha 04-13-2009 10:09 PM

Last night I put horseradish cream and garlic in the mashed potato.

It was delicious.

I dunno, my tastebuds aren't very discerning to begin with. All I know is that years ago I discovered I liked it when those items on my plate accidentally collided, and I eventually gave up the pretense and started just applying it directly.

Actually, yes, the recipe I make is quite sturdy. It's really more like lumpy mashed potatoes with stuff mixed in it. Very sculptable.

Grilled cheese/peanut butter/ sweet relish sandwiches. Grew up on the things. Some may prefer dill pickle relish.

Aliantha 04-29-2009 10:51 PM

I finally got around to making those chocolate brownies and I ate three of them as soon as I sliced them. The first one was almost (but not quite) too hot to swallow...but boy was it gooooood. Mmmmmmm...chocolate...mmmmmmM

Urbane Guerrilla 05-02-2009 02:49 AM

Hey, I always thought chocolate was the perfect sweet/candy flavor... and now I think I'm going for the Swiss Miss sugar free, plus a spoonful of unsweetened cocoa powder, now, right now... some more cocoa cuts the salty note of the Swiss Miss and enhances the chocolate. It's all about enhancing the chocolate....

This thread title has never been more appropriate.
Phew!
Family BBQ blowout...

Back on the diet tomorrow.
I had sausage, vegetable chips, cheese, white bread, mini profiteroles...
Although I stayed away from booze, Baileys cheesecake and tortillas, so I have some pats on back to give myself.

DucksNuts 05-03-2009 03:55 AM

Grapefruit...that is all. Stupid fucking detox fucking diet.....8 more day, 8 more days

DanaC 05-03-2009 06:52 AM

Well done on the Bailey's cheesecake. It looks bloody lovely in the pics.

Gravdigr 05-11-2009 08:38 PM

Watched my dad taste his first avocado about an hour ago. It was hilarious. He did not find it tasty.

Urbane Guerrilla 05-19-2009 01:03 PM

Avocados need salt.

Or the rest of the ingredients in guacamole.

Queen of the Ryche 05-21-2009 10:51 AM

I'll take all of his avocados. And yours. And anyone elses. Seems like here in CO you can't get avocado at a restaurant. Only guacamole, or "avocado spread." And they cost a fortune at the grocery store.

I just had an avocado tostada...slices of avocado on top...at a Mexican restaurant here in my town last night. You should come up here sometime and try it out. :)

Queen of the Ryche 05-22-2009 09:30 AM

Okay. I'll be right there.

Urbane Guerrilla 05-29-2009 08:45 PM

Next to guacamole, "avocado spread" is wholly worthless. Trader Joe's offers a good "guac" kit, comprising
  • two Haas avocados
  • one Roma tomato
  • one lime
  • two cloves garlic
  • two green jalapeño peppers

All fresh, about $3.50. Supply your own salt. Using a mixing bowl as your workplace, halve, pit, scoop out and moosh the avocados. Chop tomato, mince garlic and peppers. Quarter the lime for squeezing over everything. Stir and moosh everything together in the bowl, w/salt and lime to taste but it's likely to need the entire lime, the more so if you add in another 'cado. I like a lot of lime. Lemon juice is okay if you can't get lime, but lime adds a little something.

Betterer than that was the freakin' Chocolate Mascapone Pudding with Kahlua. oh.my.god.

I rock!

Aliantha 05-31-2009 06:08 PM

Mmmmm...that pudding sounds extremely close to a tiramisu.

DucksNuts 06-01-2009 05:05 AM

Very, I was gonna make tiramisu coz its my fav, but the boys wanted to make this mess...was tasty as.

Pub lunch with Mum & Dad.
I was such a good girl - only a few chips, even though they were my favourite type - big & chunky. But more importantly - no booze. Diet Coke for me, although I was craving a cold pint of Stella.

Still, it was lovely of Mum & Dad to treat me (we went walking in the woods today), so I was glad to behave, and feel much better for not even asking for alcohol.

Cheese & onion sandwich, salad garnish and a few chips from the communal bowl.

Aliantha 06-01-2009 05:37 PM

Hmmm...cheese and onion could contribute to ones single status you know mate. ;)

BTW, that postcard arrived for the boys. They're going to get one and send it to you over the weekend. :)
