Yay, fellow wooters!

I'm a big woot fan in general. Seems likely that amazon will be leaving them alone to continue being awesome in their own way, thank goodness. I've gotten a bazillion good deals or just fun things there in the past - I have scads of thumb drives, memory cards, flashlights, headphones, and various little gadgets I've picked up dirt cheap over time. If something is really, really cheap I'll buy the max amount and give it away as gifts - I got some black and decker portable battery/inverter thingies that were a big hit, and earplugs/headphones for sure, USB bluetooth dongles, stuff like that. And yeah, I managed to snag the Kindle deal - follow that thread if you wanna see my opinion on it when it arrives and I get a chance to try it out.

sad, that is a great idea, buying stuff for gifts. Tank you!

Got da camera.

Nice price. I'll be curious to hear your comments on image quality.

Not expecting greatness, but it was cheap.

glatt 07-07-2010 10:36 AM

It's a nice size too. A camera like that, you can just leave at work, or leave in a glove compartment for those time you wish you had a camera handy.

I'm curious to see. That's an amazing price for the pixels. Making a decent lens is like shooting fish in a barrel these days. I'm guessing the achilles heel is something electronic. Wondering where the biggest cost is? Maybe there are good and crappy chips 12Mp vs 12 Mp?

glatt 07-07-2010 10:44 AM

well, the big problem with increasing the pixels in a chip is that you also are increasing the noise. It's not so apparent in professional quality cameras with their physically larger chips, but the tiny chips in point and shoot cameras are really susceptible to this problem. At this point, I think anything over, say, 8 megapixels in a point and shoot actually becomes a liability because of all the noise.

The industry really needs to work on the noise problem.

That's the next one up from my camera (10.2 megapixels)
Gutted it's so cheap.

Then again, mine's pink ;)

That's why I wear ear plugs when I'm taking pictures.

This looks like a fair deal.

Woot has a decent consumer level camera for sale today for a very good price.

Panasonic Lumix 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom
$69.99

It's got the optical image stabilization. Not a huge zoom, but with 12 MP to play with you can do a little cropping to get in even closer. I wish this was for sale when I bought a camera for my daughter a year ago.

Woot: my source for buckyballs.
