I had a whole red onion at lunch.

I hadn't realised I already had onions last time I went shopping, so I bought another 3. Panicked by the fact I was becoming over-run with them I decided to use one of Nigella's tricks and soak the chopped onion overnight in lime juice. This made them crunchy and tasty without any of the "burn" you get when you eat them raw.

So I had cracked wheat, smoked salmon (trimmings, £1.18 a pack), red onion, sweetcorn with a lime and garlic dressing. And I don't smell of onions! Just garlic.

Marinated onions! Is that cool or what?

Aaand next on the platter: pickled!!

I do too know what pickled onions are! -- I just haven't eaten very many. First encounters with pickles -- that reminds me. A New Zealand friend of mine in high school got introduced to dill pickles on school lunch hamburgers. He thought they were absolutely awful. I tried to tell him about sweet pickles, or bread-and-butter pickles, but I don't think he ever believed me. He never did get a taste for them.

I love pickled onions

Clodfobble 10-26-2007 11:02 AM

Minifob loves dill pickles. He'll eat them by the plateful. Now I know for sure he wasn't switched at the hospital. :)

I had octopus for the first time last night. As chewy as expected, I'm afraid.

Visit a really top class sushi restaurant. They can bring a live octopus to your table, chop off a tentacle and drop it, still writhing, onto your plate, and you are expected to eat it immediately.
I have not had this. I've read, though, that the suckers on the tentacles will still be puckering and releasing as you chew ... suckering on to the roof of your mouth and the insides of your cheeks...

There now, your dinner wasn't so bad, was it?

Now I like octopus. But that is just grim.

You're supposed to put them down your pants! It's AWESOME!!!

Dingleschmutz 10-26-2007 01:02 PM

I didn't say it was bad, it was just chewy. It was just two pieces of nigiri, and it was cooked, so it's not like it was gonna ruin my dinner.

As for the writhing, sucking tentacle thing... Only in Japan.

Just like in Oldboy (which I highly recommend, but not fucking dubbed like this clip is):

I get these coupons for up to $8 worth of hospital cafeteria food while momWolf is in the hospital. It's a kind of a bonus club. Instead of frequent flyer miles, I get food, a discount in the gift shop, and free parking.

Usually I'm there around or after lunch and I get the sushi plate (I'm a sushi wuss, so it involves some kind of seafood that's already cooked, like the crab, shrimp, or smoked salmon). Today I was there for dinner.

I had the meatloaf and the mac 'n cheez, some peanut butter cookies, and a Coke.

And two rounds of Tums. So far.

If you don't hear from me again, tell the CDC that it was the meatloaf.

A whole packet of pods after half a bagette with taramasalata

wolf 11-04-2007 09:03 PM

You know the yanks are going to ask ... what are pods? and that taramasalata thingy? Salata, I assume, means salad, but what's in it?

Aliantha 11-04-2007 09:04 PM

tums are great. I have them for indigestion. I wonder where else you can get them

Aliantha 11-04-2007 09:04 PM

taramasalata is a greek dip made with fish roe. It's very salty and garlicy and oniony.

Pods are...I'll get a pic. Just a minute.
