One of the comments said they were reacting to a "speeding car" coming straight at them.

It's pitch black, they are holding on to one another as they shuffle blindly forward, and then a pair of headlights comes straight at them, probably with a roaring engine sound too.

ah.... yeah.. that'd startle ya.
