It is Laurie Anderson, and of course, it's a trick question. I usually offer money to people if they can guess what she's playing. I have never had to give up the money.

Her head. She has a microphone inside her mouth. Or is it the violin with a recorder head and the bow that has magnetic tape instead of horsehair?

I love Laurie Anderson but I haven't heard her in years. Thanks for making me 21 again for a bit!

wolf 06-21-2006 12:50 PM

Close but no guitar. She has done both, but neither is the case for Closed Circuit Baby.

Elspode 06-21-2006 02:31 PM

Rubber band stretched between the fingers and plucked? At least, that's what it sounds like when I do that. Always been fascinated with the idea of using that as a bass instrument.

capnhowdy 06-21-2006 03:33 PM

can't think of the name and the rules are no googling, but it sounds like one of those things that makes sound out of electrical current manipulated be the distance of ones hands from the instrument. I know. This is a shitty answer/guess.

^theremin

edit: not theramin

Elspode 06-21-2006 04:07 PM

Did I hear the right song? I heard nothing but low freq stuff. Although a theremin can do low freq stuff, it really didn't sound like one to me at all.

Definitely Laurie Anderson, though.

Undertoad 06-21-2006 04:40 PM

It sounds like her and some rubberbandy-like thing, but all either A) run through an effects unit which adds a metallic echo, or B) performed into a metallic pipe-like thing and micd at the other end of that thing.

wolf 06-21-2006 05:30 PM

Not a rubber band or a theremin ... UT's guess B is closest, but still not quite it.

Do you want to keep trying or be let off the hook?

JayMcGee 06-21-2006 06:00 PM

didgeradoo?

Spexxvet 06-21-2006 06:03 PM

I saw her play "herself" - she hit different parts of her body/clothing, producing different sounds. Is that it?

wolf 06-21-2006 06:18 PM

I've seen her do that as well, but it's not this particular cut.

Spexxvet 06-21-2006 07:19 PM

Skin flute? Male organ?

wolf 06-21-2006 07:47 PM

Nope.

I'll post the answer if nobody gets it by the time I get home from work.
