It's the ExitAir emergency evacuation hood.

They gave a bunch of these out at work after 9/11. We happened to move offices about a year ago, and after the move I went back to the old building to make sure my department got everything. There were a bunch of these things kicking around in various empty offices, so I brought one home to play with. It has a strechy rubber neck flange to keep things air tight, and has huge activated charcoal filters in the front and back to let you breath without smoke getting in. I haven't tried it in a smoky environment, so I don't know if that works, but it doesn't fog up inside like you would expect, and there is plenty of air for breathing. Plus, as you can see below, it's very stylish.

I have two shrink wrapped ones in my office right now.

Nah, it's more like the employees were paranoid, and the employer was trying to soothe them. Besides, this was DC just after 9/11 and we had planes falling from the skies around us, anthrax shutting down our post office, and fucking snipers shooting at us. Crazy times.

In hindsight, maybe that picture belongs in the " [plastic] bag on cellarite" thread.

My office in DC...
We have the same type of emergency evacuation hoods, flashlights and batteries, small packs of handi wipes, and bottled water in gov't issued bags at each desk. You KNOW none of this shit is going to save you... but for some it does have a calming affect. Me I still keep an extra pair of jogging shoes in my office... it's a long walk back home, on 9/11 it took over 8 hours to travel 56 miles home...

Helps you see better in flames, I'd imagine. Cuts down on all the distracting moving orange bits, and lets you pick out the door, or whatever.

i think there shouldnt be a filter on the bag. if youre high up in a building thats going to collapse. they should just put plastic bags over their heads to speed up the whole process.

also. having them there AFTER 9/11 is just like putting a bullet proof vest on after youve been shot.
